2.0 out of 5 starsHOW does such garbage get such high ratings?

Apparently there is just an endless market filled with enthusiastically cheering people that can't get enough of disjointed, overused cliches.

I considered giving this three stars (thinking, well, 2 1/2), but it gets a star knocked off for falling so far short of its potential. Moore should NOT direct movies! This mess is filled end-to-end with cliches that are thrown together in a hodge-podge of low-grade video clips. The CGI can be produced by anybody today using open-source compositing software and some time, so that sort of thing is passe and does NOT a movie make! I look for a compelling story line that employs perceptive cinematography to capture acting that transcends "acting." The cast had the potential to deliver. But they were all hamstrung by pitiful direction and the results of terrible editing.

And this mess gets SO much wrong that it becomes maddening. As just one example, near the end there is a composited scene with slow-motion automatic gunfire. One spent cartridge is ejected into clear view, and it has the bullet still in the cartridge. And that sort of thing is everywhere. The attention to detail is pathetic.

Moviemakers seem to think that they can just wow us with CGI and basically punt for the rest of the film. And, by the ratings of this one, apparently they are correct, because the bar is that low.

So, the question I have to ask people that rated this FIVE STARS is: How many stars is John Wick worth? Comparable genera. But if you can justify giving THIS mess the max rating, then apparently you think it's comparable to John Wick. And if you can put these two films even in the same vicinity as each other, you've lost ALL credibility!

I rest my case.

Max Payne the video game was a masterpiece of story telling in a 3rd person action video game at a time when it was and still to some degree not taken seriously. This movie "adaptation" has one B lister cameo after another looking to reclaim the limelight. I wouldnt watch this movie for free. I stopped after the first 20 minutes. Normally Walhberg is okay at what he is cast in, but he is completely miscast for this role. The man lost his family to a grisly murder. Does he come off as someone who does? At least try to make me believe he lost something, even his wallet. Perhaps that would've elicted more of a response. The rest of the cast is just as bad, if not worse. It just comes off as another sub par cop movie.

3.0 out of 5 starsJohn Moore Should have never been allowed to direct this movie

this movie is one that could have been so much more....... the actors were great, good names, good story.... but everything john Moore touches as directing flops hard. dude is one of the worse directors in the action movie business. simply put, the scenes do not go together well, the story line is choppy. so unless you are versed in max payne lore this movie will be like a jigsaw puzzle that's missing pieces. also he tried to go for a " the crow" style story tell and it did not work for this movie, how it go so many stars i have no idea. is this a bad movie? no, its not a waste of time to watch, but keep in mind this, when it was cast, was supposed to have a sequel and that was scrubbed due to this didn't do to well in theaters when it came out. editing could have been better, they had the budget to make this a whole lot more that it is. so with that, if you do know know max payne nor the lore behind it i would suggest picking up some of the video games and comic books and read some. is this a 4 star or better movie? no.

2.0 out of 5 starsA waste of good actors, terrible script, completely predictable

The ratings (stars) for this movie exemplify the problem of ratings inflation on prime video. The plot is completely predictable, the bad guy is predictable almost from the start, scenes like the party scene have no reason to be there, Mila Kunis is almost completely wasted, (not her fault, just terrible writing.) The dialog is turgid and predictable. There are dead-end characters and plot lines that have no reason to exist. This is a bad film. Just because Mr. Wahlberg stars and there's a lot of flashes and explosions doesn't make it a passable film and I condemn any viewer who gave this four or five stars.

3.0 out of 5 starsGood but not great action thriller as Payne ends up hunting the rich and powerful

Max Payne was another attempt to convert a video game into a film. It starred Mark Wahlberg as Payne a police officer haunted by the murder of his wife. At first he thought it was some street thugs but then as he investigates he finds out it involves the very powerful. Along the way he comes across a new drug that leads to horrifying hallucinations that can lead to death. The two stories end up being related as the theme is about the corruption of the rich.

Stylistically the movie mixes film noir with its use of shade and dark lighting with video game aesthetics like a constant snow that looks animated at times.

The result is a good but not great action thriller.

I'm not sure if the director ever seen or played the game, I just finished one and Max Payne is gritty, unapologetic, tough SOB that takes heavy drugs due to his on going PTSD and suppression of pain, of which he also love because it makes him feel alive. He never shows his enemies any signs of weakness, just walks by and puts a bullet in them. Mark Walberg is a good actor but this is not a fitting role nor does the direction of the movie. Filmed in dark gritty tint, accentuated score and we get a watered down Max Payne, hell he's like the Punisher, but even less F given.

3.0 out of 5 starsmixed bag that could have been better

Max Payne is videogame-based movie with a good cast, crappy writing, confusing direction and visually striking production design. What stands out most is the photography with an impressive dynamic range to compliment the sharp contrasts. The camera work was what kept my attention. The music score was modernistic in places but more cliche near the end. It wasn't hard to tell that two composers were employed on this project. The writing was what sucked the most about the movie with some cringey dialogue and ridiculous stretches of logic that muddy up the rules of the world inhabited by the hero and supporting characters. Olga Kurylenko is completely wasted in this project, playing an early sacrificial lamb.

Typical VG to movie disaster. Paper thin plot. Characters about as deep as a puddle. Zero chemistry between anybody. I played the games. The "big oh this is like the game scene" just didn't happen. It's not a this is it deal it's a the credits roll and you say I guess that one scene was it.....
The best parts of the movie are the hallucinations. I guess that is supposed to be the oh cool parts but they just make the rest of the movie look boring. Which it is.
I have no idea why the ratings are so high on this one.
Go watch Constantine. That's the one I always think about when they start seeing things in this one. Oh right that other movie is the good one. CLICK..
