I'd follow Thomas.

Being a middle aged man who grew up on action heroes of the 80's, I never gave a second chance to any of these teen-centric movies. When I saw the trailer for the third Maze Runner I gave this a second chance and rented it. And loved it. I have no prior knowledge of the books so the mystery presented here drew me in. The camaraderie of the boys and some of their wisdom beyond their years took them past the teenage nonsense I was afraid of. The production value is sky high, the music is fantastic, acting is excellent, and the tension fills the room. The plot moves well and is smooth enough to cover up some of the small holes. I expected a little Lord of the Flies and it's there but minor. The maze sequences were Indiana Jones quality. What I did was put myself in the situation with them, what would I be doing? I'd be with the hero. And that makes it a great experience.

The Maze Runner

The movie I will be reviewing is The Maze Runner. It is based on a book series by James Dashner. It’s about a boy named Thomas who, with no memory, finds himself in the center of a maze with other boys. He is very curious about the maze and, ignoring the other’s warnings about death traps and grievers, gets trapped inside for the night but makes it out alive. A girl named Teresa, who seems to know Thomas, is sent into the maze with the information that she is the last one who will be sent into the maze. After that he joins a group of runners, explores the maze, and finds a way out. Because of his actions, the people controlling the maze don’t close the gates and there is a mass killing by the grievers. Then they leave and seem to be rescued, but the mastermind behind it all, Ava Paige, says that they are only entering phase two.

The actors give a very believable performance. They are very good with their emotions and that brings a realism to the story. Thomas is reckless but he does seem to be thinking the clearest. Teresa is the only girl in the maze but she is pretty much just terrified for the whole thing. Minho is a very supportive character and he brings positivity. Alby and Newt are both good leaders and Alby is sensible while Newt is willing to be more flexible. Gally, while he is over dramatic at times, is the only realistic character who is thinking about more than just getting out. Ava Paige, the villain, doesn’t get much screen time, but she seems like she will be a force to be reckoned with. All the characters were developed nicely and you knew enough about the ones you needed to.

The movie was very entertaining. There was an energy and liveliness to it that helped balance the scary parts. The plot was predictable, but in an enjoyable way so you aren’t mad at it. The settings were cool and pretty gorgeous. The plot doesn’t give everything away in the first movie so you want to watch the next one. The struggles seem very realistic even though you know that they are fake. This movie does a great job of drawing you into the story so you aren’t just watching it, you almost feel like you are there.

And now for my favorite part! I wanted to start by saying that Teresa seems pointless to the story. I get that there has to be romantic tension, but couldn’t they have given her an actual purpose? The movie as a whole has a fast pace and it’s like everything happens in five days. (maybe it did?) Thomas is put on a pedestal which I get that he is the main character but he could have been slightly more normal. Because of his amazingness everyone else seems stupid. In three years they don’t really know how to take care of themselves and they rely on the elevator which led to one of the stupid plot points of “oh no it stopped bringing stuff!” The grievers were super deadly until they were unimportant to the story and they were the easiest things to destroy. The movie’s climax is literally just killing the characters who have any sense.

Final thoughts: it was a pretty good movie. I think I could watch it like one more time and then I would have to step away for a year. The way they blended a futuristic but still in the now feel is incredible because it gives you a “this could happen even though I know it won’t” feel. The characters were well done. I was rooting for all of them to die but this is a trilogy so maybe at the end? It was nice that there wasn’t romance in this movie more like companionship. I think the way you feel about this movie will change depending on your age and how you handle violence. If you don’t like violence then this movie isn’t for you. I would rate this movie three and a half stars.

Maze adventures are fun but there are so many holes in the plot

Dylan O’Brien as Thomas finds himself in a compound with only young men surrounded by what seems like an impenetrable maze that changes every night. That is the beginning of the Post-Apocalyptic sci-fi film The Maze Runner.

Here’s the main draw of the movie. The adventures into the maze are exciting and have some action and drama. The maze changes and at night these monsters called grievers come out.

The problem is there are tons of holes in the plot. For instance when Thomas first arrives he asks why hasn’t anyone climbed up to the top of the maze and observed it from above to get out. He’s told that’s because the vines growing on the maze don’t go to the top. The problem is there are plenty of shots that show the plants actually do go that high. Next, the grievers sting people and something bad happens to them. One guy gets stung and they banish him to the maze. Then another guy gets stung and they decide to save him even though they know he will turn. Also the first one stung get attacked during the day and apparently inside the compound and not in the maze even though there are supposed to be no greivers there and especially during the day time.

Anyway if you ignore the problems with the plot the maze parts are good.

Likes:
- Love the concept! MC injecting himself with that anti-venom is just like Eren touching someone with royal blood. The awesome lightning jolt, and the MC remembers the past. Eren luring a mindless titan into those wall traps that Hange set up so they wouldn't risk any more soldiers. Humanity within the walls, fighting mindless titans from outside the walls. Those same humans having no clue that there's an advanced humanity beyond the walls that's oppressing the people inside the walls.
There's just so much parallel to my favorite animé.
The antagonist trying to keep the people from leaving the walls is like the Eldian gov't silencing anyone who tries to create scientific inventions and explore beyond the walls.

Barely a dislike:
- I was just confused by the "sting" that turns people into titans/zombies. They didn't develop that more. Like is it from a special species of wasps or titan fluid or what?
What sucks for the characters is they can get stung from WITHIN the walls...

I also like how they were shocked to realize that you can get stung also during the daytime. It's like when the Eldians were shocked to learn that's a new breed of titans that can move at night.

OKAY. Who ripped who off?

Good movie, but...
Verified purchase
Let me start off by saying, the acting and special effects in this movie are great, and if you like action, suspense and a movie that is fast paced, this should be a good fit for you.

But (as the obligatory I read the book first review)...

This is not a movie to watch if you’re a die hard “Movies should match the book” person. Reading the book is helpful - the movie has several areas that are left unexplained, so a background knowledge of the books is good, but, there are several minor, and major, plot changes from the book. Still an overall good story, but not quite The Maze Runner.

Older teens and up will enjoy this movie - it has a fascinating plot, good action, etc...

This is one of those few sleeper movies that surprises you when you see it. Great special effects and story just keeps getting better as plot unfolds. Mostly all new talent to the big screen but everybody has to start somewhere. This movie does not have all the sci-fi techno special effects like the Hunger Games series - but it still has a high thrill factor for enjoyment nevertheless. It's so different - its not the least bit boring. I bought the sequel to see if they can continue the high tension momentum. It may start off a little slow but it gets up to speed real fast. Hold on for the creature feature portions that really spice up the plot.

As a movie it's pretty good, but it pales next to the book
Verified purchase
I think if I had seen the movie without having read the book, I would have given it a higher rating. As a movie in and of itself it's good, but the plot departures from the book were pretty big. True that they probably weren't critical to the overall story arch, and of course they had to cut/condense some stuff in order to fit the story into a couple of hours but still...lost almost all of the relationship between Teresa and Thomas, Gally is not really the same character at all, the night scene in the maze with Alby, Minho and Thomas is very different (and that was such a cool scene in the book!), the sting/serum idea of the book, the Cliff, the maze clues, the set up of the Glade, are all really interesting parts of the novel that didn't make it into the movie.
Right, other than all that, the casting was good, the acting was good, the special effects were fine...

The acting is good, great I should say

Enjoyable slice of YA dystopia, and you may have noticed that we're in no short supply these days. I haven't read the books so I didn't walk in with any preconceived notions of characters, plot or setting. I was kinda aware of the series simply by catching clips now and then in the work break room TV. I decided to watch it from start to finish so that I could put all the pieces together.

The acting is good, great I should say. These actors are young but deliver performances of those much more experienced at their craft. CGI was noticeable at times but not a deal breaker.

I'm interested in these characters and will likely read the book just so that I can flesh out the world of Mazerunner. I will definitely be watching the sequel once it is available to rent on Amazon.
