About the authors
M. K. Wiseman has degrees in animation/video and library science – both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Today, her office is a clutter of storyboards and half-catalogued collections of too, too many books. (But, really, is there such a thing as too many books?) When she’s not mucking about with stories, she’s off playing brač or lying in a hammock in the backyard of her Wisconsin home that she shares with her endlessly patient husband.
Jay is an author, game developer, and software engineer. A steady diet of Star Trek, Star Wars, and The Twilight Zone as a child, mixed with an addiction to the words and worlds of Robert E. Howard, Lovecraft, Heinlein, and of course Tolkien produced a mixed-up young man who went on to corrupt the youth making console and PC video games, and writing stories that grow out of bizarre questions that begin with the words, "What if...?"
While he tries to keep up on the newest speculative fiction by established and new authors, he'll often be found with his nose in pages of 70-year-old pulp magazines. Usually digital versions, because those old pulp magazines are delicate!
Jay is the winner of the 2016 DragonComet award for science fiction and fantasy.
Award-Winning author Scott William Taylor lives in the Rocky Mountains with his family and several pets. Scott's debut middle-grade novel Chaser is available now. Scott's story, Little Boiler Girl is included in Mechanized Masterpieces Steampunk Anthology. His story, Split Ends can be found in Xchyler's Shades and Shadows Paranormal Anthology, and Mr. Thornton, a steampunk treatment from Jack London's Call of the Wild is included in Xchyler's Mechanized Masterpieces Masterpieces. Scott is the creator and producer of A Page or Two Podcast. He also wrote the award-winning short film, Wrinkles.
Scott Tarbet's speculative fiction stories have garnered multiple awards, critical acclaim, and entertain thousands. He writes in several genres, including Steampunk, fantasy, paranormal, techno-thriller, and historical fiction.
When he is not submerged in one of his created worlds, he sings opera professionally and slow-smokes thousands of pounds of authentic Texas-style barbeque. He was married in full Elizabethan regalia, loves Steampunk and cosplay conventions of all flavors. He makes his home in the mountains of Utah.

As editor-in-chief of Xchyler Publishing, Penny Freeman has collaborated with several authors, including R. A. Smith, Joanne Kershaw, and Candace J. Thomas. She also edited and wrote the preface to Forged in Flame: a Dragon Anthology, and Mechanized: Masterpieces a Steampunk Anthology. She penned the short story "Tropic of Cancer" under the pseudonym of Neve Talbot.
Penny engages her thirty years of wordsmith experience in historical fiction, journalism, and developmental editing. Literature, history and storytelling are her great passions, although the technical aspects of the language arts satisfy her compulsion for order.
She lives with her husband in southeast Texas.

Even since childhood D. Lee Jortner has loved fantasy and mystery. Playing with imaginary friends and writing and directing neighborhood plays filled her youth. The first of her historical fantasy series, CHIMMEKEN CROSSES THE DELAWARE was released in November 2014. More in the series will be available soon.
Working as a marketing specialist for Xchyler Publishing introduced her to Steampunk and her first Steampunk story will be published in February 2015 in Mechanized Masterpieces II: A Steampunk Anthology.
Her YA murder mystery Corpse in Kitchen 3 will also be released in 2015.
When not writing, Ms. Jortner teaches English Composition at Ivy Tech Community college in Valparaiso, Indiana or hangs with her husband Larry and her seven children and five grandchildren (and still counting).
J. Aurel Guay is an aspiring author from New England where he lives with his two children, and an energetic Boxer. He writes both fantasy and science fiction with emphasis on strong plots and meaningful themes.
Having played at writing fiction since grade school, Aurel more recently has revived his passion as a coping skill in reaction to his career in biomedical science. Working by day as a scientist studying regeneration, he has signed with Xchyler Publishing to write and publish his latest work in progress, a novel titled 'Jagerund'.
Megan Oliphant has loved words and living in the made up worlds between the covers of a book from the time she was three. She has studied creative writing since college, taking classes from the founder of LTUE (Life, The Universe, and Everything Symposium), Marion K. "Doc" Smith at Brigham Young University. Most recently she won a spot and attended Orson Scott Card's Literary Boot Camp in June of 2014.
Her favorite stories to read and write are about magical events that alter reality and she loves a happy ending, but she's also a sucker for a good mystery where she can't guess the ending first.
Megan divides her time between reading, writing, and "familying" with her husband and five children in North Carolina.

If you are a fan of steampunk, this book is for you! This is a great anthology. Steampunk is a hard genre to work with when you have to keep it short. World building is key, and that's hard to accomplish when your time is limited. You've got to not only create fleshed out characters and an intriguing plot, you also have to create a fantastical world as the backdrop. These authors did a fantastic job.
I was quickly sucked into these mechanical worlds and I loved the wide variety of characters. Some stories were dark, some were romantic, some were action packed, and some were a little lighter and made me laugh. Most were many of these things at once. I also liked that they were all inspired by famous stories or poems. It added an extra layer of interest and made me even more excited to read them.
My favorite was Invested Charm by M. Irish Gardner. It was dark and romantic which is a personal preference of mine. While most of the stories were of comparable caliber, there were 1 or 2 that I found enjoyable, but just not quite as good as the rest. I knocked off half a star for that, but I would still definitely recommend this book and I enjoyed reading it immensely.
4.5 stars!
Of course, sometimes the nostalgia of a familiar premise worked in a tale’s favor; my enthusiasm for the recent TV adaptation of the Sleepy Hollow legend and fond feelings for the cozy cast of Louisa May Alcott’s best-known work further enhanced my enjoyment of Jay Barnson’s “The Van Tassel Legacy” and Neve Talbot’s “West End”, respectively. The fact that I’m a sucker for a charming con game made D. Lee Jortner’s “Payoff for Air-Pirate Pete” and M. K. Wiseman’s “The Silver Scam” a pair of easy wins for me. And if you like your adventure accompanied by automatons with personality, “A Princess of Jasoom” by J. Aurel Guay is the perfect anthology opener.
Whether you’re a fan of Edgar Allan Poe or Emily Dickenson, the sea beasts of Herman Melville and Jules Vernes or the sled dogs of Jack London, or just a reader who likes a good book with a bit of clockwork flavor, this second volume of Mechanized Masterpieces has the makings of a classic in its own right.
For those that maybe have heard mention of Steampunk but were too afraid to ask. Tor Publishing defines it as “Victorian science fiction.” Steampunk has migrated into art and fashion in addition to novel formats. If you like the TV show The Wild, Wild West, you may enjoy steampunk.
I really loved the cover on this. D Robert Pease at walkingstickbooks.com is given credit for the cover and interior design. It does a great job at setting the mood.
My favorite story in the collection was by author Diane Lee Jortner. Titled “Payoff for Air Pirate Pete,” this story is styled after “The Ransom of Red Chief” by O. Henry. I have to say that I found it charming, with bit of warped humor. “With a little ingenuity we found we didn’t need to ride trains to stay in the burglary business.” “Clayton threw his hat on the ground and swore like the mechanic and soldier he was.” And the word “skedaddle” was used. Grin.
My only complaint was that there wasn’t a clickable table of contents. You couldn’t skip to a particular story/author if you were in a mood for one over the other. You could either read it from beginning to end or keep flipping pages till you got to the one that caught your fancy.
If you haven’t tried steampunk yet, I would give this anthology a try. There’s lots here to love.
I was provided a free copy to read and write an honest review.
J.R. Potter's story, The Rise of the House of Usher, is in the style of Edgar Allen Poe's classic tale (The Fall of the House of Usher) and was extremely well crafted. It was my favorite story in the anthology and I'm now a big fan of Potter's work. I just bought another antho and Potter has the lead story, Terra Mechanica, and it's great as well.
The other stand out story for me was Nautilus Redux by Scott Tarbett. This gripping story brought together two classic novels, and Nautilus Redux is both the sequel to Moby Dick and the prequel to 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea! I was very impressed and the story pulled me in and captured my imagination the whole way through.
There are several other good stories, but there are a lot of story flavors in this anthology, and everyone has their own taste. The final story, West End by Neve Talbot was also quite interesting, and should please steampunk fans in a big way. I really liked the alternate history in Talbot's story.
