Enhance your purchase
For her entire life, FBI agent Atlee Pine has been searching for her twin sister, Mercy, who was abducted at the age of six and never seen again. Mercy’s disappearance left behind a damaged family that later shattered beyond repair when Atlee’s parents inexplicably abandoned her.
Now, after a perilous investigation that nearly proved fatal, Atlee has finally discovered not only the reason behind her parents’ abandonment and Mercy’s kidnapping, but also the most promising breakthrough yet: proof that Mercy survived her abduction and then escaped her captors many years ago.
Though Atlee is tantalizingly close to her family at last, the final leg of her long road to Mercy will be the most treacherous yet. Mercy left at least one dead body behind before fleeing her captors years before. Atlee has no idea if her sister is still alive, and if so, how she has been surviving all this time. When the truth is finally revealed, Atlee Pine will face the greatest danger yet, and it may well cost her everything.

I'm amazed that the distribution of reviews of the Camel Club, King and Maxwell, and so many other works that were great pleasures to read are virtually identical to this book. I hate to be in the bottom 2% this time.
Baldacci seems to spend more time on Mercy as well as Buckley (the bad guy) rather than Atlee. Mercy is someone who cannot catch a break, but the fact that she's ready, willing, and able to break anyone in her way doesn't engender her to many. Buckley on the other hand is a sociopathic nutjob who is never quite fully fleshed out, such as how he engineered a massive crime syndicate when his father was only some sort of religious fundamentalist and grew up in a secluded enclave. Furthermore, he devolves into a sorta of TV Batman villain with an elaborate death trap for Mercy and Atlee that proves his undoing. Lastly, the ending while certainly providing closure (coming down to the end began to look like book #5 was going to be the hunt for mom) was a bit rushed and too easy. The question of how many other secrets Atlee's biological dad is still keeping remains open.
Now, Atlee is a young woman who pushes herself to be the best agent she can be, solving crimes she is sent to investigate. However, it is hard for Atlee to move one day without thinking of her sister, Mercy, and the pain of being separated for thirty years, not knowing what ever happened to her twin. In this concluding story, readers get to see if Mercy is alive or not and where has she been. Lest one thinks that is all to the story, there is much more along with other investigations Atlee and her assistant Carol Blum must solve if they can.
In the exciting conclusion of this story, audiences find out if Atlee finds her mother and father. Have the past risks her mother took to bring down the mafia come after them but left Atlee alone? Also, in the novel we meet a vicious man whose long-term memory of past wrongs done to him, his family and others will cause Atlee to be in his crosshairs. Carol Blum is in real danger multiple times in the story, and it was gripping to see the lengths Atlee would go to find and rescue her. Her depth of love for Carol is very evident!
I hope this isn’t the last we see of the character Atlee Pine. Atlee is a strong, capable FBI Agent who has faced extremely tough times and people, yet she rises to the occasion to fight for justice! I think in the story we see a little more humanness of Atlee when she faces people wanting to do harm to those who are vulnerable. Atlee is one focused young lady who I think has a bright future, not just with the FBI, but with audiences, especially if she is teamed up with other well-loved characters from other Baldacci novels. Mercy was a rollercoaster ride that was constantly pulling me with each page I read! I hope audiences will consider reading the whole series from start to finish. It was very fun and exciting to bury oneself in the character and series! There is no teaser or hint of what might be penned from this author; all I know is I can’t wait to read whatever comes next!

In the main I have really enjoyed the journey. It has only been on a few occasions that my interest has wavered.
As I have read nearly every book that Mr. Baldacci has written, I will look forward to his next.
I have to add that I feel that there may be a little more mileage if Attlee and Britt came into contact in the future. Perhaps also Mercy’s future journey outlined.
David baldacci knows how to tell a good yarn. Andy it s so relevant to today , and politics that go on behind closed doors
Can’t wait for the next instalment.
