About the author

When John Gilstrap's first novel, Nathan's Run, hit the market in 1996, it set the literary world on fire. Publication rights sold in 23 countries, the movie rights were scooped up at auction by Warner Brothers, and John changed professions. A safety engineer by training and education, he specialized in explosives and hazardous materials, and also served 15 years in the fire and rescue service, rising to the rank of lieutenant.
That "first" book was really his fourth, and that one call from an agent (after logging 27 rejections) changed the trajectory of his life. Twenty books and seven movie projects later, it's been a good run, and it's still running. But his career track looks more like a sine curve than a rocket ship. There were lots of setbacks along the way. At one point, his writing career appeared to be dead. Then came the comeback.
John's presentation, "Dare to Dream", tells the story of triumph, disappointment, despair and finally some long-lasting success.
John has spoken at events across the country, most recently at the Pike's Peak Writers Conference in Colorado Springs, and Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers in Denver. In February, he will be the keynote speaker at the annual meeting of the California Association of Teachers of English in Los Angeles. His YouTube channel, "A Writer's View of Writing and Publishing" has over 1,700 subscribers and more are coming aboard every day.
Outside of his writing life, John is a renowned safety expert with extensive knowledge of explosives, hazardous materials, and fire behavior. John lives in Fairfax, VA.

Jonathan has just returned from a rescue mission when his ex-wife Ellen reaches out to him and tells him that her husband, Tibor has been missing for less than a day. He used to call her every single day and hasn’t called since yesterday.
Meanwhile, Sheriff Gail Bonneville and her Deputy Jesse Collier are looking into a triple murder case on a farmhouse in Samson, Indiana.
Further investigation reveals the identities of the victims and the crime scene suggests a hostage rescue had taken place earlier. Now Sheriff Gail has to find the link between the kidnappers and hostage. But some higher-ups in the FBI are determined to impede Gail’s investigation and have ordered her to stand down.
Meanwhile, Jonathan Grave’s rescue mission has caused a ripple effect and people have been killed as a result. Now he has to find the people responsible for the killings before more lives are lost. Definitely recommend.
No Mercy seems to be a solid start to this series. Jonathan Grave is an interesting character, and his cohorts offer strong support, especially his best friend Dom who is both a psychologist and a priest. Didn't really care much for his sidekick/hacker Venice, who spends the bulk of the novel monitoring Grave from their secret lair, worrying about him getting hurt. There's a few things here and there that really don't make sense either, but in the end I can overlook them while I'm being entertained. Looking forward to seeing more of this series!
So, I'm trying to put my finger on why I feel so noncommittal about it...
Perhaps it was the implausible dialogue - there were times it was so cliched I laughed out loud. Half of the dialogue was unnecessary because it was so trite and, to me, didn't really serve any real purpose - bordering on being so implied, it could remain unspoken. I'm paraphrasing - before the big climactic battle our hero says "keep your heads down, and don't give up. Whatever you do, don't give up." P.S. - Did I mention to try to stay out of sight? Sheesh.
Perhaps it was the fact that most authors I've enjoyed in the past spend some (more?) time telling us what's going on in our main character's heads - motivations, past experiences that are pertinent, stream of consciousness kind of stuff. Letting us walk in their shoes, so to speak.
Once again, maybe it's just me, but my advice would be " caveat emptor - read at your own risk."

In this story, the going is tough for him from the outset. A hostage rescue goes wrong and, although the hostage is saved and sent on his way to his family, all is not what it seems. The family becomes the subject of a police manhunt, Grave's own family members become heavily embroiled as a side effect of this, leading to murder, torture and a stop-at-nothing group of people intent on retrieving some less than desirable biochemicals.
Grave's persona follows in the steps of several American 'super heroes'. All of them highly unlikely but they do make for some action-packed stories. This one is no exception. Though he, himself, is hunted by a determined Sheriff hopefully looking to find who shot some people on her territory, Grave manages, as you would expect, to solve the questions about why this is happening and who is responsible. He sets out to find them and defeat them with a little help from his friends - including the now less than determined Sheriff.
It's a good read. Almost 450 pages without too much non-information in them. I gather there is a follow-on coming next year, so I'll be on the lookout for it.

The story is gripping and keeps the reader engaged, even to the point of thinking about it after it is finished and I would certainly recommend it but I cannot claim that I couldn't put it down although I did prefer to read it rather than watch televison.

This effort is less convincing although the story is action-packed. Jonathan Grave has quite an interesting background and operates as an undercover rescuer, seemingly with government support of some sort. A hostage rescue job goes wrong and all of a sudden his ex-wife is tortured and murdered and Grave has to right some wrongs.
The story really moves although there are some very drawn out sections, including an extended siege at a country house. You have some warm characters, but not much in the way of characterisations. We also have the predictable Ivan as the bad guy, but see virtually nothing of him or his motives. And the conspiracy angle which tries to hold things together plays only a small part.
I really think some better editing would have helped this book.
For the most part, this is a real page-turner, but it offers little which differs from what we have seen many times before. 7/10
