The story tried to be like an Agatha Christie, but was sadly lacking.
The writing style was really jolting with inadequate vocabulary, such as something being disregarded as not being "prudent" to the investigation instead of 'pertinent'.
The editing was really sloppy with words and verbs missing, text duplicated, redundant vocabulary and the likes.
Even the text did not display properly, going up and down font size like a yoyo
Altogether a really, really annoying book.
By Chapter 5, I simply couldn't deal any longer with the poor editing, and the fact that the main character, so competent in dealing with residents suffering from dementia, seems both terrified of and unable to interact appropriately with anyone in a position of authority. I gave up and deleted the book from my Kindle.
While I liked the main character, as another reader said she was over the top emotional, even if she had a good reason to be. The minute she walked onto the job, she was tossed right in the fire (so to speak) when a man dropped dead at her feet. Of course, she was promptly named the suspect in his murder, even though she had never seen him before, and things went downhill from there.
With a history of traveling to similar health centers, she should not have lost her cool over so many of the things that happened. She acted as if this was her first assignment. At other times, she was confident and caring about her patients.
I read the whole book, but decided not to read any further books in this series.
I figured out whodunnit by the first third of the book, and usually I’m clueless! There were some details that I didn’t guess, but still.
Mercy is an irritating character. She fell approximately 5 times in this book. I’m clumsy myself, but that’s a bit overboard. She also sweats a lot, is constantly nervous, and doesn’t really think things through. There was one point where two patients tried to explain something and she decided she couldn’t handle it and left....what? Why? Safe to say I do not recommend this book or Mercy as a nurse.
Unfortunately for me , there was too much negative lack of support, difficult coworkers and townspeople, with accusatory conversations and lack of investigatory process for me to enjoy the book. It was frustrating for me to get about 75% through the book before feeling there was an investigation.

***although this is part of a series each book can be read as a standalone. However, it is advised to start with Mercy & Mayhem***
I have never read anything by this author before (nor her pen names) & this type of story is new to me too but Ava has conjured quite the whodunnit for us here. I was constantly choosing my suspect then changing my mind, concocting all sorts of motives but I was WRONG every time!
My heart went out to Mercy, this sweet nurse who is kind & caring to everyone even those who don't deserve it. A number of times I thought we had reached Mercy's breaking point but no she kept on fighting & keeping her head up.
The patients all had me wishing I could hug them or chuckling along with their witty remarks. I must say I had a soft spot for dear old Betty throughout.
I fear saying more in case I slip up & reveal any crucial details, the mystery will be best if you read for yourself, is Mercy as innocent as she claims or is there truly a criminal on the loose causing havoc for the residents of this dementia ward? You will have to read & find out.
It's been a long time since I've read a book without any romance at all, but honestly, I didn't miss it with this book!
This is a story filled with fantastic characters, the kind you wish you could just bring to life!
Mercy is a brilliant main, she has a special kind of confidence or attitude about her, and I loved it! A very strong woman, considering the situation she found herself in.
The story line was fantastic, I struggled to put the book down! I found myself wanting to shout at the characters and shake them to make them see sense. But, really I wouldn't have changed a thing.
An extremely talented author, who's work I highly recommend! I look forward to reading more!
