It’s a Horrible Life - A suicidal Harley Quinn is led by her guardian angel to various alternate realities. I’d never heard of authors Paul Scheer and Nick Giovanetti, but I really enjoyed this one despite not being a Harley Quinn fan. Features Earth-42, Earth-50 and Earth-45.
Christmas by Gaslight – In the Gotham by Gaslight universe (Earth-19), Eel (Plastic Man) O’Brian attempts to rob Bruce Wayne when Batman swoops in and then Mr Freeze gets involved. Good story with a nice ending.
To Stop the Star Conqueress! – In the gender swap universe (Earth-11) the Teen Titans face off against the Starrla controlled Justice League. Decent story but pretty straightforward and forgettable.
Bizarro Love Holiday – In Earth-23, the universe of Calvin Ellis (Barack Obama Superman), Bizarro visits to express his hatred of holidays but learns a lesson in sharing. Fine story, nothing special.
Holidays Beyond – Earth-12 World of Batman Beyond Terry McGinnis. It’s fine but I know pretty much nothing about Batman Beyond.
Night of the Magi – Earth-13 Permanent Magical Twilight. Pretty good story. I’d be interested in seeing more of this universe.
Have Yourself a Bizarro Little Christmas – Takes place in Bizarro Universe (Earth-29) where the planet is invaded by Zanta of the Intergalactic Santa Corps. This one was really entertaining with great art and hilarious writing. Tom Sniegoski nails the Bizarro backwards talking.
Twas the Night – Booster Gold is working at a restaurant, in full costume, when Max Lord comes in and starts shooting the place up in an attempt to kill Booster. Booster is saved by a group of wait staff dressed as superheroes. This is supposed to be the world of Kingdom Come (Earth-22), and there is a mention of Magog, but the tone is all wrong. I’d say this is the weakest of the stories because it barely feels like a holiday story and there is no reason for it to be on Earth-22.
Prez Rickard’s Magical Sci-Fi Desolate Souls Club Holiday Special – This one doesn’t list the specific Earth but it’s clearly Earth-47, home of Prez Rickard and the Love Syndicate of Dreamworld. I’d been hoping to read a story from Earth-47 ever since Grant Morrison created it half a decade ago.
Very Lobo Hanukkah – Lobo is pissed because the Controllers have shut down a fish sanctuary that some ‘good people’ use for worship. This is the only story written by a writer I know, and Tom King has a great track record with these kinds of short stories. Not this time. The whole story is told alongside quotes from the bible, which is super pretentious, and there is no indication that this story takes place in an alternate universe. There are some good moments here but it really didn’t do it for me.
