5.0 out of 5 starsAn Outstanding Anthology
Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2019
This is one of the best anthologies of horror stories I've ever read. The 25 stories herein are a well-rounded group of tales that should please every fan of horror. You'll find everything from the hauntingly sad to the downright tragic, and a little spooky to the downright terrifying. There's a bit of the grotesque, a little mystery, and a good heaping of bad people getting their just rewards.

Here's some of the standouts:

"Tug O'War" by Chad Lutzke. This is one of two tales that after reading them, I had to put the book down for a while. Lutzke's story is heartbreakingly sad, and the climax left me stunned. Absolutely stunned.

The other one that hit me really hard was the final story of the volume, "Portrait" by Kealan Patrick Burke. When I finished his tale, I felt like the wind had been knocked out of me and I just sat there in silence. Kenneth W. Cain, the editor, was smart in making this the last story of the anthology. It's a very fitting end to a great collection of tales, and I do recommend saving it for last. You'll see when you read it.

"The Glimmer Girls" by Kenneth McKinley reminded me of the old show, "Tales From the Crypt." When I got to the climax of that tale, I could almost hear the Cryptkeeper laughing in fiendish glee. Read it and you'll see what I mean.

If you like some real scares, "Russian Dollhouse" by Jason Parent will be right up your alley. In my opinion, it's the scariest in the book.

"New Blood, Old Skin" by Glenn Rolfe, oddly enough, might be my favorite of the collection. It's not the most powerful or the scariest tale here, not the hardest hitting at all, but it really resonated with me. I don't want to say anything else here, as I hate to give away anything from a story thereby lessening the experience; personally, it really spoke to me.

Those are just a few of what's great about this anthology. I can honestly say I enjoyed reading all the stories. I'm sure everyone who reads it will have their favorites, of course, but there wasn't a single bad or weak story here. I felt like I got my money's worth and then some. I recommend this volume to all horror fans.

Disclaimer: I purchased this book for my Kindle, but I also received an electronic advance release copy of the anthology, courtesy of Silver Shamrock Press, in exchange for an honest review. They gave me no monies or any other form of compensation for my review, and the opinions stated herein are my own.

Do not understand the appeal.
I was excited for anything by Robert McCammon, but even his short story was disappointing.
I cant say any of the stories contained within piqued my interest or sparked any sort of emotion aside from boredom.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great anthology!
Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2020
Midnight in the Graveyard is quite a large anthology of horror stories. Clocking in at 408 pages for the paperback and 445 for the kindle version, this is one compilation of stories that will bust any boredom you may have. It almost reads like a whos-who of horror: Kealan Patrick Burke, Alan M. Clark, John Everson, Chad Lutzke, and Glenn Rolfe are just a few of the names gracing the cover. Among them is a bevy of horror newcomers with stories just as exceptional.

The stories inside this volume are sure to give even the harshest horror critic something to smile about. Ranging from despondency and despair to ghastly and grim, this work of spooky stories would indeed be perfect for midnight in the graveyard, if reading by the graves of the unquiet dead in the wee hours attracts you. Beckoning the wary reader into this collection of turbulent tales is a forward by Johnathan Janz warning us that "these ghosts are hungry" and boy, are they!

There were so many great stories, it was hard to choose favorites. The Glimmer Girls by Kenneth McKinley was a frightful tale to read, with a historical basis in the radium girls of the 1910s' who were told to tip their brushes with their lips to paint the dials of watches. (Perfectly safe.) Tug O War by Chad Lutzke, in which friends hold a deathbed vigil, was completely and unexpectedly dark. Ghost Blood by Kelli Owen was a surprise, telling of a very unique ability. Join My Club by Somer Canon was impassioned and creepy as stories with children can only be. As for "bad" reads, there were none, proving that this is an anthology that will be hard to top...but I hope Silver Shamrock tries.

Like horror stories? Like ghost stories? Like stories that aren't the same ol' same ol? Then grab MIDNIGHT IN THE GRAVEYARD now. Like right now. The table of contents is a who's who of the horror industry and tells you more than I ever could. While there were admittedly a couple of less than 5 star stories, there were only a couple. The rest were we so insanely terrific that this anthology tops my list of must re-reads each Halloween.

Don't miss out. Highly recommended.

As with most collections, there are some good stories and some not so good. With this collection they were mainly good. A fine collection of horror and suspense that keeps the reader always in wait for the next story. This is a collection which I would recommend to all who like horror and suspense.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding, with each story high above average
Reviewed in the United States on November 14, 2019
This is an outstanding anthology by today's crème de la crème of horror authors. There is not one story that disappoints, and all contributions are high above average. The common theme here is ghosts, and we get a wide variety of them: traditional and modern, haunted and gory, human and animal, and everything else in between...

Selecting my favorite stories here is almost impossible, as all of them are more than worth their place in this book. However, if tortured to name my top stories, it would be: 'Those Who Are Terrified (Elizabeth Massie)' which is a rather sad story about a family's darkest secrets. 'Join My Club (Somer Canon)' which is another sad story about two lost little kids. 'New Blood, Old Skin (Glenn Rolfe)' which is both creepy and somehow cute. 'The Glimmer Girls (Kenneth McKinley)' which is the most shocking, especially as it is based on rather gruesome and unbelievable true events.

There's not enough praise to give to this anthology, and if you haven't read it yet: do so now - you definitely won't regret it. Highest recommendation!

5.0 out of 5 stars Phenomenal Collection of Ghostly Tales
Reviewed in the United States on November 11, 2019
My God, What a collection. This anthology is ridiculously good. The lineup, the stories - all of it. A lot of times you will see an anthology like this with a big name like a McCammon - and the story for that guy is super short ( or not very good ). I assure you that is not the case here, the McCammon story was really, really good in this one. I recently read a 4.5 and a 5 star anthology, so I was kind of worried that this one would not be as good. I was wrong.

Oh yeah, Jonathan Janz does the introduction, This book had me from page 1.

As I prepared for this review, I jotted down little notes on each story. I then went back and tried to pick my favorites. I marked 7 stories in my effort to get to a final 4. I will briefly be touching on every story in my youtube review, but here I will only mention the final 4 and the 3 honorable mentions. That being said, I felt that I could have opened this book at random and been able to argue as to why that particular story was my favorite in the book. The selection of stories for this book were that damn good.

Honorable mentions in no order:
Those Who Are Terrified by Elizabeth Massie - 3 young girls play in a haunted basement releasing ghosts to move on towards the next existence. Learning some things along the way about some dark family secrets.

Russian Dollhouse by Jason Parent - Amazingly creepy Halloween story. Seriously one of my all time fave Halloween stories now. Abandoned house turns into a game of death, crazy good ending.

The Glimmer Girls - Kenneth McKinley - WWII era, women working in a watch/clock factory. The boss knowingly introduces workers to dangerous radioactive material. Revenge?

The Final 4

#4 Portrait - Kealan Patrick Burke - Bleak, cold, bloody story. Possibly the creepiest in the book, actually one of the darkest pieces of KPB I have read, and I have read quite a bit.

#3 The Ring Of Truth - Thomas F. Monteleone - War time story of a special group of snipers that are haunted by their victims. I actually finished this story on Veterans Day morning, which kind of made the horror in this one hit even harder.

#2 Last Call At The Sudden Death Saloon - Allan Leverone - Paranormal journalist is drawn to a haunted town. People are disappearing, all the businesses are capitalizing on the town's reputation. Things are even more sinister than they appear.

#1 Drown - Hunter Shea - Paranormal researches who have misplaced or overused their powers over the dead vacation at a bed and breakfast. This bed and breakfast is near a reservoir/flooded town. Surely the town was abandoned before it was flooded, yeah? The story deepens from there.

Again, this is a phenomenal anthology. 400 pages of beautifully written ghost tales.

So I don’t write reviews often. In fact, only when the product is either exceptional or terrible, will I muster the time and energy to proclaim my thoughts about it. In regards to this “gem” of a book, I am honestly quite shocked at all the positive reviews it has gotten. This is by far one of the worst series I have ever read. There’s not one ounce of scary. There’s not even a crumb of anything remotely good, with the exception of Russian Dollhouse. That story was at least entertaining. I tried. I really tried to like this book. Each story I anticipated that maybe it will be mind-blowing or heck, even good. But alas, I walked away thoroughly disappointed. I have read much better content from the No Sleep Reddit forum from amateur authors. Apparently, I’m in the minority of how folks think of this book. If you’re looking for a light weight ghost story to bide the time, this one doesn’t even reach that bar. Look elsewhere. Thank goodness Audible let me exchange this piece work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fine example of a horror anthology
Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2020
I’ve gotta be honest, I’m not much for anthologies. I find them very hit and miss typically, and although I’ve read some great ones this year, I’m not much of a fan of short stories in general. I just find it hard to get into a book where every 20 or 30 pages one story ends and another begins. I’ve tried to get over that by reading one or two stories at a time, over a longer period of time, rather than powering through like it’s a novel.

BUT, this being a book published by silver shamrock, I had some high hopes. I’ve yet to read anything they’ve put out that hasn’t been good.

I’m very pleased to say, this is one of my favorite anthologies I’ve ever read. There are a lot of authors I was familiar with, but quite a few I hadn’t read prior to this. After reading this, I’ve got a few more authors I need to read.

Some of my favorites were stories by Shannon Felton, Jeremy Hepler, Todd Kiesling and Glenn Rolfe, although there wasn’t really anything in here that wasn’t good.

If you’re looking for a spooky anthology, you can’t go wrong with midnight in a graveyard.

This book contains stories by some of my favorite authors but they know who they are and so do you. For that reason I'm not going to talk about them (this time)
From the first story "Devil's Dip" by new (to me) author Shannon Felton I felt like this anthology was going to be something special. By the time I got to "The Glimmer Girls" by Kenneth McKinley I knew I was right. I loved that this story was based on the real life Radium Girls! A symphony of macabre tales are perfectly arranged in this delightfully dark anthology. I have now been introduced to several voices in horror that I may not have discovered if not for this book. If you are looking for something spooky to read I highly recommend you grab a copy now.

I received an advance copy for review.

Chris McCaffrey
5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Ghost Story Collection!
Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2019
I just made notes on the stories as I went along and here there are.

Justin's Favorite--several of these stories have been what I would call "traditional" stories. Sort of like the ones you would read in Creepy or Eerie or older anthologies. For me that is a good thing. I find myself skipping some stories in current anthologies because they are more disturbing (eg child abuse, etc.) than scary. Justin's Favorite is one of several that I have read so far that are what I will call traditional and are the type of stories that attracted me to the genre in the first place.

Holes in the Fabric--very original story. I found the concept to be both realistic (somebody has to clean up after horrific events like mass suicides) and horrifying. One of my favorites.

Dog Days--hmmm. Not good. My dog is a Great Dane and is taller than me. He is my reading companion (he is never more than a foot away from me at any time) and was hanging out with me when I read this.

Bettor’s Edge by Tim Meyer: Many ghost stories involve angry and vengeful ghosts. Ghosts stick around for a reason, and apparently being majorly pissed off is a common one. Setting this story in a Las Vegas suite and the whole gambling angle gave a new setting to a classic type of story.

The Graveyard by Lee Mountford: I am liking that old school vibe of this whole collection and this story is no exception. A traditional ghost story that serves as a cautionary tale.

Join My Club by Somer Canon: Such a sad story. I wish that the story line was less common in real life.

The Cemetery Man by John Everson: John Everson is certainly original, I will give him that. I have been enjoying him ever since Covenant. It was so dark and twisted. Then came the sequel, Sacrifice, which was even MORE dark and twisted. Loved them. This story was also delightfully sick but in a much more humorous way. At least to me. Don’t judge me….

New Blood, Old Skin by Glenn Rolfe: I am sure every horror writer gets asked “where do your ideas come from?” This gives an unsettling answer to that question.

The Glimmer Girls by Kenneth McKinley: Absolutely loved this story. The time period was so well created that I just fell down that rabbit hole. It also reminded me of the best stories from the old EC Comics or early Creepy/Eerie.

Haunted World by Robert McCammon: Robert McCammon is one of my favorite authors and I would have bought any collection with him in it. He doesn’t disappoint. I don’t want to give away anything but to tease it a bit you can say that even when you live in a haunted world filled with ghosts, it can still get worse. Very unsettling story.

Ghost Blood by Kelli Owen: I have been reading Kelli Owen since she made me afraid of flies… This was a ghost story without an actual ghost, which made it even more surprising. A very original concept.

Last Call at the Sudden Death Saloon by Allan Leverone – Seriously, when will people ever stop wandering into creepy small towns? If they don’t at least have a Walmart or McDonalds, don’t stop! Some people just go around buying trouble.

The Ring of Truth by Thomas F. Monteleone: An unsettling story where the living monsters are worse than the dead. War is certainly hell or can buy one a ticket to get there. I wish the background story wasn’t a recurring actual reality during wartime.

The Gravedigger’s Story by Kathryn Meyer Griffith: A very traditional ghost story with a huge emotional impact. The principal character was so well drawn that it was easy to feel the gravedigger’s pain and be moved.

The Putpocket by Alan M. Clark: Not all ghosts mean us harm. Some reach out from the other side to help us. I fell down the rabbit hole on this one--great creation of the time and place for a sort of Dickensian story.

Swamp Vengeance by Brian Moreland: The swamps are created so well you will be swatting it imaginary mosquitoes.

Portrait by Kealan Patrick Burke: I have bee reading KPB since The Turtle Boy and have read practically everything along the way. There are a few horror writers that are first and foremost great writers and they just happen to write horror. KPB is one of those--and I think he is especially good at short stories and novellas. He almost never follows the standard tropes so you have no idea where the story is going. The closing scene is so horrific and dark (and so KPBish) it is perfect.

LOVED this collection and like some people have said, I usually don't go for short stories that much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Anthology of Ghostly Tales!
Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2019
4.5/5 stars!

MIDNIGHT IN THE GRAVEYARD is an above average anthology, comprised of ghost stories-all kinds and varieties. I had a blast seeing what each author came up with.

For me, some of the standouts were:

DEVIL'S DIP by Shannon Felton. What a great tale to start off this collection! I've never read anything by this author before, but now I'll be following her career closely. (Love when this happens.)

TUG O WAR by Chad Lutzke. A terribly sad tale that morphed into....something else entirely, (and even sadder!)

DOG DAYS by Kenneth Cain. LOVED LOVED LOVED this! Dogs are involved.

COOL FOR CATS by William Meikle. I loved this one too! (Cats are involved. Surprise!)

THE GLIMMER GIRLS by Ken McKinley. Terribly, terribly, sad. I think the fact that we all knew how it was going to end only added to the poignancy of it.

THE CEMETERY MAN by John Everson. Everson's unique style of mixing the erotic with the horrific is on display here.

HAUNTED WORLD by Robert McCammon. It's McCammon. 'Nuff said.

GHOST BLOOD by Kelli Owen. Imagine if you could see blood anywhere it has ever been spilled. From shaving cuts to mass murders-you see it all. How ghastly!

LAST CALL AT THE SUDDEN DEATH SALOON by Allan Leverone. An abandoned sanitarium in a haunted town-who wouldn't want a drink before going there?

THE PUTPOCKET by Alan M. Clark. This might have been my favorite tale. (I know, it surprised me too!) I felt an almost...Dickensian vibe with this and I really got down with the story and its narrator.

PORTRAIT by Kealan Patrick Burke. Yet another poignant story from a master.

SWAMP VENGEANCE by Brian Moreland. Unexpected, but fun just the same.

I'm going to leave it off here because I liked just about every story in here, but I can't mention them all. My only nitpicking complaint is that perhaps this anthology was a bit too long.

I consider myself lucky to have had the pleasure of interacting with all of the authors in a group read in the Horror Aficionados group. The book and the experience were both a heck of a good time!

Highly recommended!

*I received an e-ARC of this anthology from the publisher in exchange for my honest feedback. This is it! Further, I am one of the moderators of the HA group mentioned above. The fact that this was a group read did not affect my opinion of the contents of the book.*
