The language style is very simple, which does not detract from the story. I also really love the fact that the main character is autistic, but that this was not a major plot point; it was simply a part of his personality. (There were only two places in the entire text where this fact was clearly confirmed, and I appreciate seeing the representation without it feeling like a "token" character or a stereotype.)
There were some issues with grammar, mainly homophones and places where text was revised, but part of the old text was left in place. There were some inconsistencies in terminology (e.g., the use of "English" vs. "Common"). Normally this would be a major issue for me, but as I said above, the story was so engaging that I could look past it... though I do hope that the author has more thorough editing for later works. This is why I only took off 1 star for that issue.
A space alien, whose home and family got destroyed by asteroid miners during mining operations, fled onboard of the mining ship for safety. This is where Higgens met this alien, a shifter, after a hilarious couple of encounters. Thereby started an enchanting space adventure of first contact to rock the universe (and almost guaranteed that of the reader as well).
The first two books deal with the first contact and search for alien shifter, now called Mimic, world of origin. Along the way a strong bond is formed between Mimic and Higgens that will transcend by far the very alieness of their beings into an unbreakable friendship.
This series is heartwarming and really something special. It will be something you will finish reading quickly as you will find it almost impossible to put down. And when you do, it will be rather forlornly as you look to grab the next in line. It really is that good! Enjoy!
Part of it is the necesities of the format, being written as a trilogy of short stories instead of a single novel. This means that each individual part needs it's own beginning/middle/end so you lose a lot of detail along the way and some major scenes are going to feel rushed. And I accept that and it wouldn't be too bad except that on top of that, there's a lot of sequences where it doesn't seem like any progress is being made, nothing built up for later in the story, no goals accomplished, just waiting for something to happen or the heroes getting back to the same place they were before some setback. Which is okay when it's used for character development, but too much downtime or an extended period that feels empty saps my enthusiasm to the point where I have to push myself to keep reading and start to wonder why I don't switch to something else.
Book 1 is a little shaky, but promising. Book 2 feels like it's moving toward an excellent series. But then book 3 loses all that momentum, introducing lengthy subplots that don't seem to contribute anything besides unpleasantness, and villains that don't seem like they could possibly be relevant ever again.
I was torn between giving this 3 stars for being mediocre but not bad, or 4 for something I liked but can't love. Rounded up because the writers have some good ideas and deserve more attention on their work, but it'll be a while before I bother to check on the sequels.
The funny thing is that when I first had Amazon suggest this series for me I was hesitant. The idea sounded good, but after reading the description I wasn't quite convinced that it would be a good tale. However, a deeper instinct suggested that I try the series.
And I'm glad I did. The story is a definite adrenaline rush at times, with some of the plot threads unrolling at a very fast pace. There aren't many deep descriptions of objects or people, but the characters still get a few moments to shine as the action and adventure plays out.
This is definitely a good adventure science fiction, with Mimic being one of the better alien characters I've read in a while. I was quite happy to try this

The narrative for the first book focuses on Higgens and Mimic and brings in a number of secondary characters who become central as the story unfolds. The second novel revolves around the search for the homeworld of the race Mimic belongs too and the third the consequences of finding it and the fact that all is not well. All three novels are well written with good character interaction and pacing is crisp with both action, drama and humour equally represented. As I said I enjoyed the first three novels and no worries about buying the subsequent releases to discover the fate of Higgens, Mimic and their friends as they deal with Earth and other interested parties.
