If you want to live a life of purpose, build good habits and achieve your goals, there is one skill that is more important than anything else: Self-Discipline.
Self-discipline is not about punishment, it’s about self-respect. It is not about being inflexible, but about living your best life. It is the superpower of focus in a world of distractions — allowing you to overcome procrastination, excuses, bad habits, low motivation, failures, and self-doubt. With it, you can stay on track with your values and goals even through the times when you are least inspired.
Self-discipline allows you to choose who you want to be and live by design rather than by default.
As a meditation teacher and self-discipline coach, Giovanni Dienstmann has helped hedge fund managers, CEOs, entrepreneurs, ambitious professionals, artists and pro athletes to live a more focused and disciplined life. Since 2014 he has been successfully coaching people to overcome distractions, procrastination, self-doubt, fear, and other forms of self-sabotage. Whatever self-discipline challenge you face, whatever excuse you are telling yourself — Mindful Self-Discipline is a collection of all these years of experience, converted into a tool for you to use.
This revolutionary book is a comprehensive and practical guide for you to develop self-discipline in a balanced way — without beating yourself up. It emphasizes the use of mindfulness and awareness as key components for building habits, rather than forcefulness and willpower. If you have tried other methodologies and failed, then this is for you.
This manual for living your life purposefully contains:
- Over 50 step-by-step exercises
- Over 100 illustrations and diagrams
- Links to the scientific studies about each topic
- Many, many examples — all to make it as easy as possible for you to actually apply all this knowledge and transform your daily life.
If you have tried other approaches (Miracle Morning, Atomic Habits, Willpower Instinct, Tiny Habits, Discipline is Freedom, Hooked, Can’t Hurt Me) and didn’t get the results you were after, then this is for you. Mindful Self-Discipline goes much beyond building habits, time management, and forcing yourself. It is gentler, more achievable, and rooted in living a life of purpose.
Think you are not made to be self-disciplined? Think again.

The book does a great job at mapping the science of self-discipline ( theory, principles and practices ) with a commitment to clarity and practicality , the author reminds us that self-discipline is the how and not the why.
The book goes further than offering a set of tools and techniques (don't worry, they are all there). Skillfully Dienstmann helps me (the reader) identify my deepest values which translates in my fundamental aspiration (bliss, dharma), so no tough talk about willpower , no pushing to keep climbing the ladder to find out it's against the wrong building. Self- discipline as the author tells us is about self-respect and self respect is the driving force to self actualization. The choice is simple to live a designed life or a conditioned one. This is the journey of a lifetime and now there is a guide book you can trust to get there.
The book is very well organized like a textbook (or a great travel guide) if I would recommend reading the whole thing it is not necessary since the table of content is comprehensive and easy to navigate, at the end of every chapter you will find a "Key Points" section that summarize as bullet points the substance of the chapter.
I have really enjoyed this book and I know it will be a companion for many years to come.
All the stuff that wasn't available now is and it's great.
Go fill yer boots.
This is the first 2-star review I've ever written and it pains me to do so. Why? Because the book is great. It's a fresh approach to the problem and I learned a ton of new information despite only being halfway through it.
The issue is that the links to the workbook and other resources don't work.
I signed up for the workbook. Put my email in as requested and waited for the ubiquitous reply verifying my info and giving me access.
It never came. No, it's not in my spam or junk file either.
I went to the contact page of the website to report the glitch. When I hit send on the message I received a message "your message can't be sent, contact the site admin." Of course, there's no site admin info anywhere on the page.
No problem. I went to the developer of the companion app that goes with the book. Reached out to the developer to ask if he could help or knew what was going on? Nope. No reply from them either.
If you're going to release a book that claims bonuses and resources you should make sure they work as advertised.
If they get fixed I'm happy to come back and amend my rating.
I'm grateful to have this book in my library and I'm certain that it's going to provide a lot of fodder for spiritual and emotional growth in the next several years. Thank you!
In this book, Giovanni takes us by the hand on a journey that encourages introspection and action, through the lens of self-discipline. His proposal is a harmonious approach that works as the baseline to surf our daily reality making conscious decisions that can lead to fewer regrets and purposeful living.
It starts by asking simple questions to the reader as an introduction to self-discipline, along with witty and spot-on quotes that continue to appear to pave the way for each chapter, engaging you to keep on going to find out more.
Whether you are familiar with the topic or not, you can appreciate the structure and flow of the book, which takes you from the basic concepts to more complex ones through the use of metaphors and examples that are easy to relate to, allowing you to understand and incorporate the material by doing the proposed work.
If you are looking for a quick read on the subject or cheats on how to be more disciplined, you may not enjoy this book. I believe it is meant to be a companion you can go back to at different stages of your life. There are interesting concepts and theories within the book, that’s for sure, but the biggest take-away is the step-by-step exercises and diagrams that call the reader to action. So, if you are willing to do the work just take it easy and take your time. Trust the process and enjoy the ride!

I'd like to merely add that personal development cannot be attained without consistent self-discipline.
This book shows you the how of self-discipline.
