Sarah A. Hoyt was born (and raised) in Portugal and now lives in Colorado with her husband, two sons, and a variable number of cats, depending on how many show up to beg on the door step.
In between lays the sort of resume that used to be de-rigueur for writers. She has never actually wrestled alligators, but she did at one point very briefly tie bows on bags of potpourri for a living. She has also washed dishes and ironed clothes for a living. Worst of all she was, for a long time, a multilingual scientific translator.
At some point, though, she got tired of making an honest living and started writing. She has over 32 -- the number keeps changing -- published novels, in science fiction, fantasy, mystery, historical mystery, historical fantasy and historical biography. Her short stories have been published in Analog, Asimov's, Amazing Stories (under a previous management), Weird tales, and a number of anthologies from DAW and Baen. Her space-opera novel Darkship Thieves was the 2011 Prometheus Award Winner, and at this moment the third novel in the series, A Few Good Men, is a finalist for the honor.
Sarah also won the Dragon Award for Uncharted (With Kevin J. Anderson.)
She also writes under the names Sarah D'Almeida and Elise Hyat.

I love the MHI universe and am happy to have another opportunity to enjoy it, but the tone of this book is very different from the others in the series. It could be because its the first book written from a female characters POV, the addition of Sarah Hoyt, or the narration of Bailey Carr, but I find the MC to be whiny and annoying. Maybe it says something about my own subconscious bias or an inability to relate to a female MC, although I've never had a problem with any of the female characters. Bottom line, while I liked the majority of the plot well enough, if this were the first book in the series I would never have picked up book 2.

The story was ok. Larry Correia clearly did not have much to do with it. Probably just gave a outline to keep continuity. I have read everything the he has written. I'm a huge fan. The MHI books with John Ringo were great. This is nothing like those. Hoyt doesn't really fit for this series. Her and Larry's style are not compatible. Julie Shackleford is a resourceful, intelligent badass. Hoyt's version of Julie came across weak and emotional. More like a sixteen year old girl dealing with her first real adversity in life. Very annoying and did a disservice to all the books before hers that established Julie's character. I bought the audible version as I always do and the narrator was horrible as well. If Hoyt or the narrator Carr are on any of the future iterations then my time in the MHI world is done. Love Larry and his books but this wasn't fair to his die hard fans who spend a lot of time and money listening and reading his work.

Julie was a whole lot more likeable until you gave her an inner monologue. I have never had to push through one of your books. This one I couldn't skim through fast enough. Get the gang back together, or something. That last book sucked. No offence. Is that what happened? You had a female writer come in and screw it all up for your fans? I am a chick and couldn't handle the self diatribe. I don't even like Julie anymore and she was one of favorits.

Fair to middling. More like Blade/Underworld meets Home Alone II, but from the mother's perspective.

Quite obvious where Correia left off and Hoyt took it up:

Main character, Julie, started off as the hyper-competent Monster Hunter / CEO-in-all-but-name, a character with many facets and shades, that we all know.

40% into the book, her internal monologue shifted into nothing but
#omgmybaby #mustgetbabyback #whateverittakes. This was disappointing given the richness and depth in the characters that I've come to expect from this series, and cripples the book given its first-person narrative.

Side characters were also unfortunately stereotypical; anal-retentive Germans, insanely touchy yet incompetent Portuguese, obese Americans in Hawaiian shirts, behind-the-scenes sugar daddy dragon providing everything from jets to suave lawyers to sports glasses.

Verbiage could use tightening up; i.e. "the bullet came 'out of nowhere' and obliterated his skull..."

Overall this is an acceptable book with a strong logic to everything that happens and the characters may or may not exist as you remember them in other books.

If your looking for a deeper look into Julie Shackleford or even the Shackleford family you don't get much of that. Some bits and pieces but it feels really thin on background. Even The Guardian and the background of the curse are unfulfilling.

Having reread all the MHI books over this summer one of the things I have noticed is that the later MHI books spend A LOT of time reviewing backstory that happened in the earlier books. That by itself isn't a bad thing but its rarely comes with new information. For example in this book Julies bad Prom Date from the Files book comes up but nothing is added to that event. Same is true of talking about Christmas party, its talked about but nothing is added. Julie talks about how much she loves her Grandpa but gives few examples of why. Its weak. More details are given about one event in Julies life but that ties directly to the plot and leaves me cold since its the old George Lucas thing where everything ties together and there are no independent events. ("its like poetry its rhymes" if you know what I mean)

This book really doesn't move the timeline forward past Siege much, only about 2 weeks. I fully expect you could likely skip this book once the next Owen book comes out and not miss much. Or you will get a summary in the next book...

That said if you like MHI books read this one, the action is good, it kept me going nonstop for 3 days(I read slow) and I was happy with the ending. When I read the end of Siege I told myself I was going to be really mad at Larry if he wrote a book about a baby being kidnapped but after having gotten to the end of Guardian I'm ok with a book about about a baby being kidnapped.

I'm ok with where MHI is at and look forward to the next book but I greatly hope it moves the timeline forward more than Guardian.

Edit: Since reading the hard cover I had a chance to listen to the Audio book and its as bad as the other review say. Oliver we miss you.
