Editorial Reviews

Review

“Fast, funny, frightening— and filled with shocks and surprises. These books are my kind of fun. I want to live on Monsterstreet!” -- R.L. Stine, author of the Goosebumps books

“Reynolds kicks off a series to be based on classic horror story scenarios... most of the short chapters end with a sudden shock or cliff-hanger... Readers hoping for close encounters with werewolves will be well served.” -- ALA Booklist

“Reynolds’ debut series entry is a fast-paced, cliffhanger-heavy creature feature.” -- Kirkus Reviews

4.0 out of 5 stars R.L. Stine Approved!
Reviewed in Canada on July 8, 2021
I whipped through this first installment of the “MonsterStreet” series in no time, much like I used to do with every “Goosebumps” book I could get my hands on as a kid.

Knowing I am not the target audience for this, I still find it fun to regress into my youth mentally and just enjoy the ride of a book that was written for kids ages 8-12. This particular story follows Max Bloodnight, who is left with his grandparents on a farm lacking electricity for a few days. Max’s dad died of mysterious circumstances, and there is talk of wolves in the eastern woods near the farm. Max must find out what happened to his father, learn about the grandparents he never knew until this trip, and figure out what is going on in the town and the woods.

Each chapter ends with something exciting happening to keep you turning the page (just like “Goosebumps”), and the reader is led in different directions to keep the story interesting. I’ve seen some people get a bit upset about Max starting out as a vegetarian and later becoming a meat-eater, but I believe the nature of the story allows for leniency on this topic.

I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who loved R.L. Stine growing up. If you want to read something that makes contemporary pop culture references while keeping true to young adult horror, you should check out this book for yourself or your kids. I will be reading the next installment right away!
