Very disappointing

Ms. Black is such a fine writer, and I've really enjoyed other books by her. This one is definitely not one of them.

The H--a glut of alpha sterotypes that don't add up to an H. He's broken up from a failed marriage, but basically absolves himself from fault there. He doesn't speak or behave as a man his reported age would. He falls into insta-lust with the h, who is more than a decade younger than him, and who has a 1 yr old child. Age differences aren't typically an issue for this reader, but when the h is mid-20s, and the H is just shy of 40, that doesn't jive well for me. I feel most women are still closer to girls in their mid-20s. This made me feel the H was more than suspect in his super-quick interest. It dulled the romance slant.

The more you read about the plot, the creepier these facts become.

The background plot is centered around a rich, mostly pedophile type guy who spent a lifetime grooming girls to move into his bed--the h being one of them. This very seedy and sick behavior seems to color the whole story. I had a difficult time separating his behavior from that of the H, who now lusts after the h. Maybe unfairly, it felt like there were similarities between that sick old dude and the H--maybe just the age difference. I couldn't get on board with the romance between the H and the h because of those similarities.

Then, there was the h. Her character was unsettling. She spent a great deal of time explaining how the pedophile old dude wasn't as much to blame, since she "started things" between them. Despite her protestations about what she learned in therapy, she kept explaining it was really her fault. This all smacked of a male POV and fantasy, although the author may not have intended that. It just kept creeping me out, and felt wrong.

The overall plot was pretty weak, and was mostly a vehicle for the supposed romance. Way too early in the story, the H is telling the h how much he wants to have sex with her, sometimes right after she's sharing about her sexual experiences with the pedophile. That just pushed all my inappropriate buttons! Nope, nope, nope.

I'm actually kind of sorry I finished the book. Some of the uneasiness I felt will hang around for a bit.

This just isn't up to the Shayla Black standards, as well as being somewhat disturbing.

Enjoyable Visit with Characters from the Series

FINAL DECISION: For such a short story, this packs a lot of character and relationship building in. I enjoyed this very much as Tanner and Mandy have an instant attraction, but takes time for them to get to know one another. Much of the story is told in a quick fashion, but I liked these two together.

THE STORY: Readers of the series know about Barclay Reed, the father of several main characters in the series. Barclay Reed managed to father various illegitimate children by taking advantage of women in his employ. Amanda Lund is the daughter of one of Barclay's friend and is also the father of her one-year-old son. Even though Barclay is dead, his legacy lives on as someone is threatening Mandy. Enter Tanner Kirk, who agrees to be her bodyguard.

OPINION: I enjoyed this story, perhaps because it feels like a landing spot for the series meaning that we get to see all the couples and get updates. I enjoyed the relationship between Tanner and Mandy. The whole situation between them is not really complicated even though Amanda has a difficult past. Everything seems clear and straightforward so I am happy to just get to concentrate on all the character relationships.

I just really liked Tanner and Amanda who both are people who have made mistakes and are interested in moving forward together. I liked their conversations which seemed mature and designed to really understand one another. I thought their romance was nicely paced, giving them time to get to know one another. Then the story gets hot!

The story is an easy read and because the length is short, it was a particularly enjoyable short read.

WORTH MENTIONING: This is a novella-length story with a nice bunch of updates about the couples so far in the series.

CONNECTED BOOKS: MORE THAN PROTECT YOU is book 6.5 in the More Than Words series. The romance here is self-contained and this can certainly be read as a standalone. However, characters from the series make appearances, and reading in order gives a fuller understanding of the whole storyline.

STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

MORE THAN PROTECT YOU is a novella in the MORE THAN WORDS series by Shayla Black, this series revolves around the Reed family and is best read in order of release. The addition of the 1,001 DARK NIGHTS novellas gives new readers a great way to jump in and see what all the fun is about, while giving lovers of the series additional couples that may not have otherwise gotten their own stories.

Amanda is a single mom with a stalker after her so she flees her home in California to stay with family in Hawaii but somehow the stalker finds her so now it's time to call in a bodyguard because there is no way this momma bear is going to let anything happen to her son.

Tanner is a new resident of Hawaii, after his failed marriage Tanner wanted to go somewhere and start over and the beautiful island called to him.

When Tanner and Amanda meet for the first time it's as if they are both electrified because the chemistry is so intense there is no backing away from it. This is an insta-love story at it's finest, we have likable characters, awesome chemistry, and a suspenseful story to keep us wondering whodunit? while needing a bottle of water to cool off.

This was a nice addition to the series if you have been reading it and if you haven't this is a great way to be introduced to it, so I would recommend grabbing a copy today.
