If you’re looking for hard SF, this isn’t it. The seeder Universe is a space fantasy with a bunch of hand waving, deus ex machina, and cardboard characters. It can be a quick, mindless, and entertaining read. But damn does it need some editing.
In the previous volume, Mattie was waiting on Bodie Station for Carson. He had been tracking a group that threatened Sector Force Three. He had sent her a message saying that he would meet her at the station.
Mattie finally noticed Carson coming toward her. Some stranger was with him acting as his bodyguard. Red noticed Mattie and alerted Carson to her presence.
Carson introduced Red to Mattie. He said that some of his investigations had been traced back to him. He had gotten permission to seek protection. He gave her a data stick containing every thing he had learned about the group.
Then the attackers came after them. Mattie told Carson to get to cover and killed the woman with a baby buggy and a gun. Red shot the other two attackers.
In this novel, Wade Ray is a Seeder, He is very old and married to Tacita. They are tracking a very large starship which seems to heading for a collision with a populated planet.
Maria Boone is a Seeder and the Chairman of a ship backtracking the Seeders through the Local Group. She has ben following their path for five years.
Roscoe Mundy is a Seeder. He was a member of Sector Force Three, but had retired since he didn't seem to age.
Callie Sheridan is a Seeder, She had been a Professor of Paleontology at the University of Oregon in Eugene. She had been digging in the Oregon Caves, but found bodies everywhere when she came out.
Vardis Fisher is a Seeder. He has several doctorates and patents and had been exploring the local stars in The Lady. He likes to cook.
Mattie Silks was an operative of Sector Force Three. She was the best enforcer on the force.
Red Simms was a cofounder of Innocence Incorporated. It protected innocent victims from hunters.
In this story, Ray is in the command seat of a Seeker starship. The crew is waiting for the ship they are tracking to come out of Trans-Tunnel flight. As it returns to normal space, it is moving at 98 percent of lightspeed.
Ray contacts Boone and Mundy and asks them to meet him at a lodge, Fisher greets them and then introduces his wife Callie. Ray and Tacita teleport into the lodge and explain their problem.
Mundy becomes the Chairman of the Huntington, the largest warship in the galaxy. He and Maria brief his officers on the situation. They start recruiting crew for the Huntington, including Red and Mattie.
The starship seems to be an ancient Seeder vessel, but much larger than modern ships. They use The Lady to intercept the runaway ship within the FTL tunnel. They try to scan the ship, but it transports them to a huge landing area within the ship.
They scan the ship from the landing bay. They do not find any living being onboard. Boone believes the vessel to be a Mother Ship carrying smaller ships to another galaxy.
The control room is vast, with many seats for the crew. The command seat is double and clearly marked for a male and a female. They discover that the ship controls are password protected.
This tale has Boone and Mundy falling in love. They each sit in a command seat and the ship welcomes them. They learn the password and their crew start working at the consoles.
Then Ray tells them the second part of their mission. The next installment in this sequence is The High Edge .
Highly recommended for Smith fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of runaway starships, galactic seeding, and true romance. Read and enjoy!

And shouldn't a sci fi author who has written "more than 100 novels in 40 years" (as the author's blurb says) at least know the fact that time slows down for objects moving near the speed of light is called "time dilation" not "time deletion"?
