It's Christmastime, and Mortimer Mouse, unhappy in his cramped, cold hole, goes in search of a new home. He spies a nativity scene that looks just right for him, so he moves the statues out and settles himself into the manger! My life is a series of lessons and moments that see me to the next lessons and moments. Some moments are sweet, some scary, some a blur gone too fast and forever missed. I write for children because all of these steps started there, in childhood, and that sense of wonder, keen curiosity, and the ability to see things much kinder and more magical than they actually were, fades as time passes and years and experience claim your naivety. For me it is a feeling only rekindled when I am creating books, stories and poetry.
My children, family and friends are a great inspiration to me, and the support of my readers is a tremendous honor. It is always my desire to entertain children and encourage them to think about and explore their world, and the worlds beyond, embrace creativity, and love learning for the duration of their life. Knowledge comes through words, so for me literacy is the foundation of education, and it bears the fruit of intelligent and empathetic citizens of this world and humanity.

Award winning illustrator Jane Chapman graduated from Brighton University with a First Class Honours degree in illustration. Working as both Jane Chapman and under her pseudonym, Jack Tickle, she has had more than 100 titles published in over 20 countries. Jane is perhaps best known for her illustrations in Karma Wilson's 'Bear' books, an internationally bestselling series which has garnered a string of awards including the Oppenheim Platinum Book Award for 'Bear Snores On'.

Wonderful story combining Christmas trees, presents and cookies, with the true meaning of Christmas with the birth of Christ. So far, my favorite Christmas book for my son. Adorable details, beautiful illustrations, and profound new way of presenting the idea of making room for baby Jesus.
Mortimer the mouse is looking for a new home when he finds a great little house-but its filled with statues! He shoves all the statues out, and sleeps in the nice cozy bed of straw. Every day, the statues are put back, and every night Mortimer has to push them out again, until one day, he overhears the story of Christmas and lovingly gives his bed back to the baby Jesus. In the end of the book, you see him with an even better house for a mouse (a gingerbread house!)

I’m a sucker for children’s Christmas books that have a strong Christian or true-meaning-of-Christmas theme. I’m also a sucker for lovely illustrations. And this book checks off everything on the list. The illustrations are vibrant and clear, and depict lots of well known Christmas images. The little mouse Mortimer is relatable to small children - being tiny in a house that’s built for someone much larger than yourself, searching for something just right for you. Mortimer doesn’t like his dark, dingy hole in the wall so he goes in search of something more warm and cozy. He comes across the nativity and decides to make his home there. But one night he learns who the home belongs to, and what he does will be a surprise to the tiny reader. The book came in perfect condition and my child has now asked to bring it to school to share with his class. If you like this book you’ll also love Room for a a Little One.

This is one of the sweetest Christmas books! I bought this for my kindergarten students to add to our classroom collection. While this is not one that a kindergartner could read on their own, my students greatly enjoyed the story and the pictures when I read it aloud to them. The story is so sweet and I love that it includes the nativity as well. This is definitely one you will want to add to your Christmas book collection if you have little ones in your life!

I still got it, and even though my son is older for it already, he liked it and most importantly; realized what the lesson is and spurred a conversation around it. I wish I had known about it earlier, but this will be a nice Christmas tradition for many years to come.

A Refreshing Perspective!

No doubt it's a challenge to present the manger scene in a fresh perspective. Yet, Karma Wilson is up for the challenge! This story is told through the experiences of Mortimer, an adorable little mouse who seeks a warm home in a table-top manger scene. Not knowing the purpose of these ornaments, Mortimer decides to simply push the baby Jesus and the other manger statues out in order to make room for himself, presenting a parallel dilemma to the original Christmas story: where will Jesus stay? Each day is the same. Mortimer returns to find baby Jesus back in place, and Mortimer pushes and shoves Jesus back out. It is only while overhearing the Christmas story that Mortimer realizes whom these statues represent. He remorsefully offers Christ his bed back. In the end, there is room for Jesus - and there should be room in your home for this book! It is a great message with delightful illustrations and a happy ending for Mortimer . . . who later finds the best home a mouse could ever ask for! You'll have to read it to see!
