It still tastes great.
The packaging is well designed and by adding 1.5 cups of boiling water you can zip the top closed and wait for the food to absorb the moisture. After stirring when the first five minutes are up you simply wait four more minutes and the meal is ready to eat. This is not thick chili, in fact it's rather liquid, but the flavor blend is good. I can definitely see this being a welcomed hot meal on any outdoor adventure or as an inclusion in your inventory of emergency food stuffs. We are prone to having long power outages due to weather events so this can come in handy if you have a way to boil water. The expiration date for my product package was 2049. Certainly not inexpensive, but if I buy a few at a time they could fill in a desirable space in my emergency inventory.
The amount of beef, macaroni and beans is balanced, and this dish is well seasoned with a flavorful tomato based sauce with a spicy kick. It’s hot enough to satisfy my taste for spicy food but not so spicy as to make my mouth burn or keep my son from eating it even though he doesn’t eat much spicy food. The sauce is fairly concentrated and a little extra boiling water would be good, in my opinion, so long as not overfilled.
The chili tastes well cooked from the boiling water. Following the directions, the noodles came out al dente but cooked. I like my noodles firm and was glad they weren’t mushy, but some may want to leave the package sealed a couple minutes longer and/or add a little extra boiling water for softer noodles. The sauce is concentrated enough that a little extra water would be fine. It’s high in sodium, so I wouldn’t eat this often but it doesn’t taste too salty.
The packaging is convenient and clever as no other container is needed for reconstituting or serving. This is perfect backpacking food and also great to have on hand for emergencies, such as earthquake preparedness or any situation when fresh food may be difficult to obtain or cook. It has an advantage over regular shelf stables I keep on hand for earthquakes as the expiration date on mine is 2049. The sodium is high, but this has no chemicals or preservatives. Excellent for dehydrated food. 5 stars.
I followed the directions as if I was out at a campsite, the only difference is that I used a gas stove at home to boil the water. Boiled water is the same whether it's prepared at home or heated over a campfire. I followed the directions: adding 1.5 cups of boiling water to the foil pouch, mixing with a spoon, resealing the packet to steep, opening up after 5 minutes to mix again, resealing and then letting it sit for another 4 minutes.
I ate the chili mac directly from the pouch.
The chili flavor masks some of the dried beef flavor, and the dried beef had a reconstituted texture. But the taste was good, and I finished the two serving packet by myself - which is what I would do at the end of a day backpacking.
Cleanup was a snap, but those of us following the Leave No Trace creed must carry the empty packet out of the woods before disposing of it.
I have had good experience with Mountain House freeze dried meals, and this is among the best.
I shared this chili mac and beef entrée with my children. We had it with some vegetables from the garden on the side to freshen it up, because there aren't really any vegetables in here. There were ample enough portions of meat and pasta, and enough sauce and flavoring to go around. I was really impressed with how well they managed to bring all of the flavors together, and how well everything rehydrated.
I will advise that you should definitely use the hottest boiling water possible to make this, because I found that when my water is merely simmering when I pour it in, sometimes the center of the meat chunks or bigger pieces do not rehydrate as well as I would hope. However, when done as directed, these really are great.
The portion size was generous enough to feed a 40-year-old woman (myself) and two small children, with a pile of vegetables on the side. If you are not having vegetables on the side, I would not try to share.
