Authentic and heartbreaking

This is a movie that depicts the struggle of an everyday man in Riga during the Shoah. His decision to help Jews is depicted as appropriately conflicted and torturous for his wife, the ghetto scenes capture the filth and humiliation suffered by a community, and the final scenes are true to the Nazi's evil deeds. Excellent acting, even by the children in the film, beautifully shot scenes of the ugliness of the Nazi era, and the bravery of one family.

This movie was advertised that it was in English. It certainly wasn’t. I don’t mind movies with subtitles but this movie doesn’t have any. I tried watching it to see if I could figure it out and I can’t. Can’t get a refund. This is not the first time this has happened. Whoever is loading the videos on Amazon isn’t checking to see what language it is in. Some movies have multiple languages. This one just says English and it isn’t. I am guessing it is in Latvian since it is in Latvia.

Pure cinema!

Almost dialogue-free, the film accumulates through powerful shots and scenes, as films did before sound.

It's everyman (and everywoman and everylittleboy) against overwhelming odds.

Intense. Emotional. And quiet.

The long pauses were a bit much, but 4 stars for such a hero's tale!
