Her novel Missing May received the Newbery Medal in 1993 and A Fine White Dust won a Newbery Honor; she is also the author of two Caldecott Honorwining picture books. Some of her other notable works include the Annie and Snowball series, the Poppleton series, the novel The Islander, and a number of other poetry books and story collections. She lives in Lake Oswego, Oregon.

I used these as readers for my late 1st grader/early 2nd grader. I love how many series Cynthia Rylant has done on different reading levels, and Mr. Putter and Tabby were as fun as the others we have used. I have found that my children learn to read better when they love the characters, and they always love Cynthia Rylant's characters. In these books, the characters are cautious Mr. Putter, his very sanguine neighbor Mrs. Teaberry, and their pets, which suit them each perfectly. Each story is gentle and fun. Mr. Putter grits his teeth and goes with Mrs. Teaberry's newest wild scheme, her dog Zeke is crazy, his cat Tabby wants to rest, and Mrs. Teaberry bakes him wonderful goodies. They are kind to each other, and he reminisces about boyhood days... really sweet stories. My son told me when we were going through all of these that reading was his favorite time of day.

If you haven't delved into Cynthia Rylant's many series for many reading levels, you can do a google search to figure out which one might work best for where your child's skill level is.

We have several in the series and are so happy to have a collection from which she can pick and choose for any occasion. I brought this one on our last vacation (along with Mr. Putter and Tabby Row the Boat) and it was a great addition/distraction while we were away...something fun and familiar to keep her good company... After a while, Mr. Putter, Tabby, Mrs. Teaberry and Zeke all start to feel like family :)

I've bought numbers of the Mr. Putter books for my granddaughters, and since I identify with him and his neighbor Mrs. Teaberry, I adore reading the books. The stories express gentle care of the neighbors for one another. I read one review critical of the deception the couple exercises in taking their pets on the train. My granddaughter and I, however, read the story from the perspective of old folks enjoying an outing with pets who snooze throughout the ride. I LOVE Mr. Putter's escapades, and think he is a perfect role model for this grandmother!

My dog was named after the dog in this book belonging to Mrs. Teaberry. I love the author and the entire Mr. Putterand Tabby series. Mr. Putter is a senior citizen with thinning hair, reduced hearing and cranky knees and so is his pound rescued cat Tabby. They live next door to Mrs. Teaberry and her dog, Zeke. They have many wonderful adventures.

My granddaughter and I like all Mr. Putter stories, and Mr Putter and Tabby Take the Train is probably our most favorite. I personally like the idea of banana crunchies, eaten in the company of dear Mrs. Teaberry, with our pets, sleeping or tossing the window shade! Excellent story and for those who disapprove of "flexing" rules--my advice, take this story as fiction at its best; kids understand we would not be able to sneak pets aboard a moving train! (most likely) but it does make for fun reading!
