I found the storyline interesting and close to captivating, however, the vulgar language, nudity and sexual scenes were unnecessary. You can tell a story without all that garbage.

Robot is one of the best TV shows ever created
Verified purchase
Mr. Robot is one of the best TV shows ever created. The choices that they make with their cinematography are strange and beautiful and carefully constructed, it's like nothing you have ever seen before. Every episode feels like a mini movie, and the more you watch, the further you feel yourself being sucked down the rabbit hole, as if just by watching you have become an accomplice in Mr. Robot's deeds. The soundtrack and sound engineering are perfect. This is also one of those shows that lets you know about half way through season one that none of the characters are really safe. Rami Malek is a revelation, I had only seen him in Night at the Museum before this so didn't really have a gauge on his talent, but he is mesmerizing. And hello Christian Slater - his is a role that really only he can play, I was a huge fan of Mr. Slater in his "Heathers" days and was excited to see him in this. And then there's Martin Wallstrom, who gives an incredibly complex and chilling performance every time he is on screen - his character feels like what Patrick Bateman (American Psycho) would be like in real life. Really looking forward to more of this show.

A grim look at life in the cyber society
Verified purchase
"Mr. Robot" is a multi-layered (and grim) look at life in what has become a global cyber society.
It's a society that relies on information - and disinformation - for almost every facet of life and that makes it ripe for hackers who can get inside your (or anyone's, for that matter) computer and wreak havoc. They can steal your money, dig out the darkest secrets of your personal life, and wreck your career all with a few keystrokes.
And if one of those hackers is driven by a strong sense of social justice and is also losing his mind?
In that case, you can imagine that the world is in for a bumpy ride.
What makes "Mr. Robot" a truly interesting television series?
The acting - it has a wonderful cast led by Rami Malek - and, most importantly, its relevance. We live, after all, in an age in which corporations mine your data to sell you things you probably don't need; an age when nation states mine the same data in an effort to swing elections, discredit opponents, and boost their own images abroad. It's an age of online dating, online banking, online shopping (that's how I ordered this series) and - well - online everything. The result: It's an age of increased vulnerability.
The producers and writers have done an excellent job of creating memorable characters, ranging from the psychologically fragile hacker Elliot and his small band of social justice warriors to the men and women of the gigantic corporation that has its fingers in virtually every facet of human life.
They also developed a complex plot that I'm not sure works entirely well as a television series. Elliot is clearly disturbed but as this first season progresses we are asked to believe in his delusions as much as he does and that's difficult for me to do. Is he the leader of the group, for example, or is he a recruit? Did he come up with the whole idea of bringing down the world's largest corporation or is he merely one of the hacktivists trying to do that? Is his dead father really alive, or just a figment of his imagination?
My point is that it was hard for me to believe in the narrative at times because I'm not as delusional (at least I hope I'm not) as Elliot.
A great cast, an extremely relevant subject, and some strong secondary characters make this a pretty good - if, at times, almost unbearably grim - look at 21st Century life: 4 stars.

This show is completely engrossing. After watching the first two episodes I was hooked. Rami Malek is really outstanding as Elliot Alderson, and he will be the reason that you return again and again. Other exceptional stand-outs are Elliot Villar as Vera, Martin Wallström as Tyrell Wellick, and of course Christian Slater as Mr. Robot. The story itself is interesting, and while I've heard some complain that it "gets slow" or that it "drags on": I would have to disagree. Instead, I would say that the story unfolds very "thoughtfully," and it leaves enough bumps along the way to always pique your interest. Honestly though, besides the wonderful characters and story, the cinematography is the biggest pull for me.
All I can say is that the camera work is beautiful and artistic. For instance, you'll oftentimes have Elliot's head in the corner of a frame rather than just straight-on... as if to tempt the viewer to look around in the scenery... almost as a simple play off of Elliot's paranoia. Scalpel precision is used to capture delicate facial expressions, subtle eye movements, and collect every ounce of energy that the cast gives off.
I feel that I'm running myself ragged here, but I literally could go on-and-on about how many things I like about this show. Mr. Robot is a true 5 star show to me. Great cinematography, a stellar cast, and I can't get enough of it-- an instant classic.

This is a major score! I was totally engulfed in this gripping series. I love plot twists, this has em. You can't take your eyes off for one second or you may miss a major part of the scene set-up. every nuance of this this film was produced in a way that makes you crave for more. Every character is layered, rich and dark. I love dark and edgy. Push the limited of television.I'm glad that Amazon picked this up and I wish they'd hurry up and add the other seasons as well. Wonderfully written, produced and the actors superb! We all need a break from the boring reality genre, this is your chance to remember why we started watching tv again. Great writing, thought evoking, emotional drama and something close to our real culture and times of this age! LOVE IT! MORE PLEASE!

Mr. Robot is an original series of the USA Network, and the first two seasons (22 episodes in all) are currently streaming on Amazon Prime. The third season is in production at this time.

The story line of this engrossing program revolves around a group of young people, computer hackers with the goal of bringing down the biggest corporation in America and throwing world financial markets into chaos. (It is apparent, even to someone with limited computer skills like me, that lots of careful research has gone into the making of Mr. Robot, particularly with regard to the methodology of hacking.) The corporation that the hackers are hoping to topple is a massive conglomerate with tentacles reaching into many businesses and industries stretching across America and around the globe. It is known as "Evil Corp."

The main character in this fast-paced television drama is Elliot Alderson. He is portrayed by a mesmerizing young actor named Rami Malek. Malek's acting skills in the series were recognized in 2016 when he received an Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama for his role in Mr. Robot.

Elliot (Malek) is the leader of the hackers, but his life and mission are complicated by the fact that he is a diagnosed schizophrenic who won't take his meds - but he does have a dependency on crushed morphine tablets which he snorts. Elliot's friends and co-conspirators, at least one of whom is imaginary, sustain him. Elliot is motivated to bring down Evil Corp because its wanton disregard for environmental regulations led to the cancer that killed his father. Elliot also has a mixed legacy of feelings toward his father which color his actions throughout this cyber drama. (In fact, if the show's creator and writer, Sam Esmail, had sought my opinion on the matter, which he did not, I would have suggested naming this primary character Bud Anderson, with a tip of the hat to a television son whose father always knew best.)

Christian Slater plays the title role of Mr. Robot. He serves as a motivator and enabler for the group of young hackers, and he is often pitted against Elliot who does not want to injure or kill anyone with the group's otherwise illegal pursuits. Mr. Robot, who once pushed his young son out of a second-story window, has no qualms at all when it comes to violence.

Angela Moss (Portia Doubleday) is a fringe player with the hackers who is also an executive with Evil Corp working to bring it down from the inside. Angela, like Elliot, is motivated for revenge because Evil Corp also caused her mother to develop cancer and die.

Darlene (Carly Chaikin) plays Elliot's sister, Darlene who steps in to manage the hackers during her brother's occasional mental breaks. Darlene is one of the more ruthless characters in this drama, and will not hesitate to murder when the need arises.

B.D. Wong, of Law and Order SVU, has a dual role in Mr. Robot in which he plays both a male Chinese diplomat as well as a female Chinese revolutionary/anarchist by the name of "White Rose." Wong is very cunning and believable as he drifts effortlessly between genders.

Swedish actor Martin Wallstrom gives an edgy performance as Tyrell Wellick, a Wall Street executive who is passed over for an important promotion at Evil Corp. Wellick, too, is brilliant with computers, but he has a dark side that smolders with depravity and violence. Wellick satiates himself by roughing up his pregnant wife (Danish actress Stephanie Corneliussen) at her insistence and careful direction. Wellick, in fact, enjoys aggressive sex with other women - and men - and is also capable of murder. There is enough psychopathy between him and his wife to sustain a boatload of bloodthirsty Vikings.

Law enforcement is represented in part by FBI Special Agent Dominique DiPierro (Grace Gummer) known as "Dom." Her focus on the hackers in all-consuming, a situation which leaves her as emotionally flawed at the individuals she is pursuing.

And those are just a few of the main characters who populate this tightly-wound psychodrama. There is also a second tier of players who are just as vile and brutal - like the drug dealer who had his own brother killed, a porn ring, and a serial philanderer who, even though he is married, works hard at maintaining relationships with several other women.

Those who devote the time to watching this series will come away with a more realistic view of the actual threats to personal security and world order. It is a gripping and extremely enthralling look into a future that is probably not too far distant.

I highly recommend Mr. Robot. It will definitely rattle your security cage.

Disturbing
Verified purchase
Rami Malek is an exceptionally talented actor and I whole heartedly applaud his portrayal of Elliot in Mr. Robot.
However, I find the subject matter for the show extremely disturbing. I did not watch the show when it originally aired on USA but picked up the DVD of the series because I wanted to know what else Rami had done after seeing his outstanding performance in Bohemian Rhapsody.
As a nurse and a mom of son's - one of which has a son with Asperger’s, I found myself feeling deep concern for Rami's mental well-being as he tends to totally immerse himself in the roles he takes on. I'm sure he gave Elliot his all as he did with his role of Freddie Mercury.
The graphic violence and the explicit sex scenes in season 1 are, in my opinion, superfluous to the story and could have been modified and still left the story with good continuity and conveyed the message Mr. Esmail wanted to share. Overall Sam Esmail has given the viewer a series that makes one question their lack of attention to internet security and just what is really going on in cyberspace.
I've decided to purchase season 2 but hope it's less dark than season 1.
