I've never read any of Ms. Davis' "Diva" novels, but the Paws and Claws book gets off to an exciting start. Holly, the put-upon heroine, is funny and smart. She falls in love with a goofy Jack Russell Terrier, who keeps disappearing. Or is he kidnapped? She's at the Wagtail Inn, owned by her Oma, who has turned the inn into a pet friendly place. Never was before. Holly's been away too long. And her grandmother seems to be in dire straits. But about what? I'm not going to tell you, other than to say Holly's also adopted by a wily calico kitten, Twinkletoes. Lots of engaging characters. The action never stops. The four-legged cast is wonderful. Oh, appreciated the Cast of Characters at the front of the novel. Helped mucho!

What stopped this from 5 stars was the rushed ending. I had to keep rereading to make sure I knew what was happening. But I'm looking forward to reading the 2nd book in this charming series.

"Murder, She Barked" is the first book in a new mystery series by Krista Davis who also writes The Domestic Diva series. The Paws and Claws series is off to a good start with a multi-layered mystery and a cast of characters who are interesting, a little quirky and a lot of fun. Holly Miller is the main character who answers a call to return to her grandmother's inn in Wagtail, Virginia because her Oma needs her. Oma owns a premier inn where guests can bring their pets along and can even take them to the dining room. The entire town caters to pets and as Holly stops at a gas station, she acquires her own dog who provides a lot of humor and fun in the story.

The author did an excellent job of making the mystery, the important characters and the pets involved the center of the story and didn't get off-track into anything irrelevant. The mystery is good and not easily solved. Holly is a very likeable character who faces more than one challenge along the way, and is a great help to her beloved grandmother. Two murders are two too many in such a small town as Wagtail and when a theft occurs it complicates things even more. The Sugar Maple Inn, where Holly is staying and helping her grandmother, is a place that would be wonderful if it really existed. I'd love to go there along with my cats!

I really liked this book quite a lot and I'm looking forward to the second in the series. If you're an animal/pet lover, you should enjoy "Murder, She Barked."

I really enjoyed reading this book, and the second one in the series as well. Am ordering the third today. The characters are mostly well rounded and interesting, and this setting has a bit of a twist compared to most of the cozy mysteries I've been reading. The author did a good job of keeping the mystery of "whodunit" to the end, at least for me. I love the animals, and while there was some tense moments concerning the dog, I was very pleased to see the author did not drag it out too long and all worked out well. Sometimes authors don't know when to let up, but not so in this case I am thankful to say. I am much more of a cat person, and cats are a part of the setting, but more prominent in the second book. Still, I enjoyed the dogs as well. All pets are included in this delightful community where pets are not only welcome, but catered to. I found it to be a fun adventure, and toward the end had trouble putting the book down both for wanting to find out just who was to blame for the murder, and what Holly was going to decide. I thought I might know in the former case, but did not, and hoped I knew in the later case. While not all books resonate with everyone, I would recommend this book if you like animals, a female protagonist, and a mystery that really does keep you guessing until the end.

When Holly gets an urgent call for her to come to her grandmother up in Wagtail, Virginia. She drops everything and borrows her boyfriends car to race up there. When on a stop to fill up with gas, she finds an abandoned scruffy Jack Russell terrier who decides that she wants to go with Holly.

While driving up the mountain in the fog, Holly has to slam on the brakes to miss someone in the road. But when she goes to check...no one is there. But minutes later an explosion shatters the night from down the gully and she puts a 911 call out and awaits their arrival.

When Holly finally arrives at The Sugar Maple Inn, her grandmother's hotel. She finds that a lot of changes have gone on since her last visit 5 years before. Wagtail has become the premiere pet vacation spot, with The Sugar Maple Inn being the top spot to stay.

She finds her grandmother has a sprained ankle from jumping out of the way of a speeding car that kills one of her hotel employees. It wasn't an accident, as no cars are allowed in the pedestrian only area. So was the driver after Sven...or Holly's grandmother?

There is a lot of uneasy things going on in Wagtail and Holly needs to get to the bottom of it all, before she can return to looking for a new job back in Washing DC...or die trying!

This is a thoroughly enjoyable story. My attention was engaged right from the start and I read it straight through. A great story for dog and cat lovers as it is full of animals, but you don`t need to love animals to enjoy this complex murder mystery. Holly has just been sacked. She receives a phone call and rushes to the town of Wagtail to go to her Grandmothers aid. On the road, just outside the town, the tension starts to build as Holly sees an explosion. She arrives in Wagtail to learn that her Grandmother has almost been killed and a murder has been discovered. There are plenty of complications, not least, caused by the tiny dog Holly has rescued. Holly`s boyfriend Ben arrives, but not because Holly is there and he has an old girl friend in tow. There are plenty of complications during this story and I will be surprised, if you know who dun it? Light-hearted and heart-warming. I just wish I could live in Wagtail.

It is the first in the series and does a very good job setting the scene and introducing the characters while making sure that there is an interesting murder mystery at the centre. I enjoyed the idea that there is a whole town dedicated to pet tourism and wish I could actually go on holiday somewhere like that. I think the characters are believable and fun, though I have to say some of the pets in the story are a bit too well behaved! I'm looking forward to the next book and would recommend this to people who enjoy expertly crafted mysteries.
