5.0 out of 5 stars An Irish Cozy Done Right
By SoCal Reviewer on May 15, 2021
Carlene O’Connor infuses her fifth Irish Village mystery with fresh energy by setting the murder in the nearby village of Ballysiogdun, making “Murder in an Irish Cottage” one of the best in the series so far.
Besides Ballysiogdun, O’Connor weaves in an Irish “seanchai” (traditional storyteller) and fairy rings and fairy trees as subplots, as well as introducing main character Siobhan O’Sullivan’s (very) prickly future in-laws. This mystery could be read as a stand-alone, but would be best enjoyed as part of the series.

Alternating the action between tiny rural Ballysiogdun and Siobhan’s hometown of Kilbane, which in contrast now seems bustling, propels the plot effectively. O’Connor writes well and she depicts saturated scenes and evokes sense of place - so much so that the villages almost become characters and serve as motifs for their residents. Likewise O’Connor has always deftly inserted into her plots many well drawn distinct characters and she continues to excel here. The O’Sullivan Six siblings are growing up across the books but O’Connor retains their personalities as they help eldest sister Siobhan investigate the murder. The siblings appear in several memorable scenes just bordering on chaos and complete with lively dialogue. Incorporating the family of Siobhan’s fiancé into the plot adeptly adds dramatic tension, layers of complexity, and interest - and we can look forward to how Siobhan’s relationships with them evolve.

Two points that won’t detract from the rating but are worth mentioning. Leading to the denouement, Siobhan must gather all the suspects. How she does so seems a tad too simple given how clever Siobhan is - the one slightly off note in the book - but this is easily forgiven as we get caught up in the reveal. Also the Irish names/words will be difficult for many readers, and it will be like a reading speed bump when you encounter them (especially if you pause to research the pronunciation).
