Ms Charlton requested reviews if we like the book. I hope she wants reviews if we love the book because this is perfection. The mystery is extremely well crafted, complex enough to keep the reader guessing, and gripping. Superb. What makes the story extra special are the human interest touches; so many, so heartwarming, so human nature. And even animals and babies. Oh my. This just couldn't be better written than it is. Charlton is a very talented storyteller who used her gifts to great effect.

This book is "clean" and appropriate for teens. But it is wonderfully appropriate for adults. Nothing fluffy or simplistic here. I suppose it works as a stand alone but why would anyone want to miss the series?

I have read and loved all the books in this series and this is another wonderful story. Det. Lavender and Constable Woods are called to a house in Mayfair for a dead body behind a locked door. Turns out the man in the room was murder in the street some time before he returned to his lodging. Without adding spoilers, Lavender and Woods travel to a number of locations and talk to some very interesting characters including to sister newly back in Britain after spending most of their lives in India. As well as the dead man's wife and land lady. There are threads to the continuing series, but they do not distract from the main mystery.

While this book is part of a series, the story is self contained and can be read without the other books, but you should consider reading the series because this is a wonderful series with great characters and dialogue.

The best mystery plot of the series

It is difficult to explain why I like this series so much. Maybe it is because it always keeps me interested and lets me relax at the same time. Technically it is a light historical mystery/thriller taking place in 1812 England and describing the work of London police. I got very attached to the main characters and always look forward to reading more about them. And I love all bits of history interwoven into murder plots.

The mystery plot in the current book is probably the best in the whole series. On the other site, the story does not include as many trinkets of curious historical information as earlier books. But this is fully compensated by the author’ note at the end.
Not to spoil the main mystery but to wet a reader’ appetite I can just add that Constable Woods tries to lose some weight and Inspector Lavender is expecting a baby. All these (of course) while solving a very complicated murder case. Same as in the earlier books, there is a multitude of other colorful and intriguing characters belonging to all levels of British society.

This is the 5-th book in the series but it can be read on its own. I love the author writing style and I am already looking forward to book number 6.

Yet another Detective Lavender tale impossible to put down! Ms Charlton's mastery of the details of life above and below stairs in Regency England is mind boggling, as are her plot twists. But this is possibly her most intricate plot thus far. Magistrate Read, on hearing the lodger in elderly widow Sylvia Palmer's Park Lane mansion may only be the first of several connected murders, poo-poos requests from higher up to take Lavender off the case and declares him the only one who can possibly solve it. Fans of the series will be thrilled to learn Magdalena is with child, that Ned Wood's eldest son Eddie has joined Bow Street as a stable boy with an eye to following his father into the horse patrol, and eccentric Caroline Claire and her Cuddles make an appearance. The rest of the characters run the usual gamut of the high-born and those who serve or prey on them. Enjoy!

Bk 5 in the Lavender & Woods series

This was not as complex a plot as in Bk 4, but there are still many questions to be answered and red herrings to work through for Principal Officer Stephen Lavender and Constable Ned Woods. Bow Street's most formidable team is asked by Sir Richard Allison to investigate a locked room murder.

As usual, Lavender is juggling his personal and professional responsibilities. His wife Magdalena is expecting their first baby. Lavender quickly figures out the murder, only to be surprised when the victim turns out to have led a complicated double life - in fact, the man supposedly had already died and was buried several months ago!

Constable Woods is still suffering the effects of his weakened arm, where he was shot in Bk 4. He's gained considerable weight, and some unkind remarks on his weight gain spur him to dangerous efforts to lose the excess poundage. What will happen to him if his lingering injury prevents him from returning to the Horse Patrol?

Once again Lady Clare proves helpful in Lavender's investigation, and even Magdalena is able to offer some wise advice to her husband. The characters, as always, are vivid and distinct, with good dialogue. The plot twists Ms. Charlton throws in are clever and unexpected, resulting in an intriguing mystery and a satisfying solution.

Solutions are found for both of Woods' problems. Son Eddie shows great promise as a future Bow Street officer, making both his parents proud. Lavender deftly handles his stepson Sebastian's jealousy of the new babe, even as there are hints that something is not quite right with his new daughter.

This is a wonderful series and I've really enjoyed binge-reading the first five books. I'm looking forward to future books in the series. Note that you should not miss reading the author's notes in the back - finding out what historical nuggets led to Ms. Charlton's creative thoughts is an added bonus!

Having discovered the author's previous work it was an easy decision to make to purchase her latest offering. Not only was I delighted to find detective Lancaster at his most tenacious at crime solutions but also with the birth of his first child a very modern happy, flawed awed new father. This is not only a new to the page era of detective work but an interesting insight into human nature. Karen Charlton conjures up believe able characters and sets them in a period not commonly written about but with a modern pen. I took forward to Lavender's further exploits.
Now to pass this to my wife badgering me for her chance to read.

The plot was intricate, but good and the characters well portrayed - with the unmasking of the murderer well thought out. My only criticism is that the author felt it necessary to remind the reader so often that London in 1812 was smelly. Most readers will have grasped the point early on without labouring the point quite so much and with so many new words for smelly - and it really did go on a bit in that vein. Lavender and his side kick were very well drawn and the reader felt that they knew these two characters very well. The research into Police procedure, documents etc. was meticulous and added to the whole book. But cut down on the smelly words and descriptions please.

What a delightful Regency Romp

Set in Regency London in 1812 and featuring Bow Street runner Stephen Lavender, his Constable, Ned Woods and crew, the book is a complete joy. I love the characters, the history, the warmth and humour, the dialogue and plotting. It's the fifth book in the series, but the second one I have read, joining in the series halfway along them. I love the books. This one is even more enjoyable than the first one I read, Plague Pits and River Bones which I bought because I was intrigued by the title. Still think it's a great title. I am falling just a little bit in love with tall, handsome and athletic Lavender. And the repartee between him and Ned Woods as they gallop around such a well described London of that time is pure magic. This is how a book should be written setting, plot and characters all meshing seamlessly together to make entertaining reading. Thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. I am normally rubbish at sticking with a book series. I read the first one maybe a second one, but the thought of five, six or more by the same writer with the same characters makes me hesitate and ponder all the other books, recommendations and pile of to be reads and I don't. I will make an exception in this case because the writing is so good and the entertainment level so huge. In my teens I loved the books of Georgette Heyer and the Lavender series ... I've only just learned he is based on a real Bow Street Principal Officer - is a delightful so now updated version, but better. Loved the book.

Great Historical Fictional Detective Story

This is the authors fifth offering in the excellent Detective Lavender series. Based in the 1800's it is full of historical details and the author has a wonderful talent in being able to transport the reader to another time.
The story centres round a dead body found in a locked bedroom with the key on the inside! Although in the posh side of London Lavender proves that a murder has taken place and sets out to find the perpetrator.
Intriguing insights to the different classes of life in that time and men's pursuit to marry into wealth was interesting. As was the older rich ladies pursuit of young men!
The bit about Lavenders side kick Ned Woods deciding to fast to lose weight was tedious and in reality he would have been sent home without pay for fainting. But setting this aside it was still a cracking read and definitely recommended.

Once again you can find at the end of the book the historical details concerning this tale, and these are superbly implemented within this great mystery.

This mystery is mainly set in September, AD 1812, in Regency London, and our protagonists, Detective Stephen Lavender, and his friend, Constable Ned Woods, will come into action again in an attempt to solve a murder mystery which has occurred in Park Lane, London.

The murder victim is a certain, David MacAdam, a cunning man with expensive tastes, who will do anything and will deceive anybody in his effort to really get what he wants.

Somehow his duplicity has worked against him, and now at Mrs Palmer's lodgings he's found dead, supposedly stabbed to death, by Lavender and Woods, with the certain consequence that many more eventful elements will unfold themselves during their investigations.

What is to come is a thrilling and entertaining murder case, in which Lavender and Woods need to follow the evidence and leads they will gather, and in their own remarkable way intertwined with an exciting and suspenseful plot, and it certainly had me guessing, they will discover in the end the surprising culprit of this heinous murder.

Highly recommended, for this is a superb mystery and part of a fascinating series, which gets better all the time, and to come back what this episode is concerned I like to call it: "A Fabulous Executed Murder Mystery"!
