Murder in the Secret Garden (A Book Retreat Mystery 3) Kindle Edition
|New from||Used from|
There is a hidden garden bordering the grounds of Jane Steward’s book-themed resort—a garden filled with beautiful but deadly plants such as mandrake and nightshade. Tucked away behind ivy-covered walls and accessible only through a single locked door, as described in the pages of Frances Hodges Burnett's classic novel, the garden is of special interest to Jane’s current group of guests, The Medieval Herbalists. But when one of them turns up dead, Jane must discover whether a member of the group has come to Storyton Hall to celebrate their passion for plant lore or to implement a particularly cruel means for murder.
With thousands of books at her disposal, Jane believes she has the proper materials to solve this deadly problem. If she’s wrong, however, she may lose something far more precious than the contents of Storyton’s secret library...

The characters come life and a village not only gets new residents but also a new business much to the delight of all the outdoors people in the area. While the first annual duck race didn't go quite as planned the picture Ms Adams painted of the ducks and the choices that people made I could picture with clarity.
I could also picture the medieval wedding food and all.
Spoiler Alert! I would not have been eating the wedding cake. No frosting, no frosting flowers, no thank you.
I have to admit I was stumped for the reason of the murders at first. But it might have been because of the interaction between Jane and Edwin. And me yelling at Jane. Then I remembered she's a character in a book. On to book number 4. People binge watch shows, I ’m binge reading this series.😊
MURDER IN THE SECRET GARDEN
So, this is the 3rd book in this fantastic series by Ellery Adams. And I have to say, WAHOO! This series just gets better and better!
This one opens with Jane Steward preparing for dual events at Storyton Hall, her beloved Inn full of wonderful library rooms and book themed suites. The first is a convention of an Herbalist Group and the second is a wedding. It looks like a busy and fun week is ahead. Plus there is a new shop in the Village of Storyton, an Outdoorsman shop, run by a very nice older couple who also are members of the Herbalist group.
The new shop owners plan a Duck Race the first day of the Herbalists Gathering and this sets the scene for the mystery. This time though the body that Jane finds isn't in Storyton Hall, but in the river. And yet, there is much mystery she must solve as the woman she finds is one of the Herbalists whom Jane had met and liked. There are many twists to the plot, the possible love interest for Jane that she can't decide if she should trust or not, the herbalists themselves including one highly unpleasant woman who goes by the Stage Name, The Poison Princess. And finally a missing Herbal Book that had been in the hidden room that is the closely guarded secret of her family, but she had put in a locked case on display for the herbalists to view.
Will Jane solve the mystery before the Herbalists leave? Will the wedding go off without a hitch? Will Jane finally give Edwin Allcot the time of day or tell him to stay away? All is intriguingly revealed as the story unfolds.
This is fast become a favorite series in the Cozy Mystery Genre! I highly recommend you add to your reading list today. The first two books are "Murder in the Mystery Suite" and "Murder in the Paperback Parlor".
I give it Five Stars! *****
How I wish I could go to a book Retreat like Storyton Hall where books. are all around, be able t o relax and tea would be an added bonus.
When an Herbalist is found dead floating in the river,Jane and the Fins are going to do everything to find the truth.
Many secrets, intrigue, suspects, plenty of clues and wonderful characters.
A fast paced story that will keep you guessing until the very end.
Loved the story and can not wait for Jane and the Fins next adventure so I can return to Storyton Hall.
I enjoy the references to other books interspersed throughout this mystery. While this book and series fall into the cozy mystery genre, the author does take some liberty with language that might not be appreciated by cozy mystery purists, but would definitely be enjoyed by individuals who appreciate a traditional well written mystery. As a bonus, the back of the book includes a sneak peek of Killer Characters, the newest book in the Books by the Bay mystery series! If you love a good mystery, delectable food and cats, then this series is perfect for you.
