4.0 out of 5 starscompelling and enjoyable series
this is what austria-german international police would be a model of cooperation would be . Too bad they did not include Switzerland to produce a trifecta. At start it was ohh no again reaction to the anti hero or rebellious character and a trauma past context of the 2 main characters. But it was saved by a good plot of every case and every episode there is a subtle change of the main characters, in fact evolving which is engrossing because experience does give you a different perspective as well as new discovery of the characters individual identity. I thought on my first impression to be formulaic but as the minutes go by it did not fall trap on that . It is a watchable and enjoyable series with a touch of just right comedy and personal drama.

5.0 out of 5 starsGreat acting from star Nora Waldstätten and guests
Best television I've seen for ages. The transformation of the character played by Nora Waldstätten from near-autism to warm and connected which takes place over the seven episodes is masterly, the guest performances are superb - particularly that of Susi Stach in episode 3. A plus: There are no murders of children -- a gimmick that British TV can't seem to do without. Talking about you, "Vera."

5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent
I’ve watched the first two episodes and can report that this is an excellent Austro-German Police series. Of the two leads, one Inspector is German, the other is Austrian, and they do not get along when they first start to work together, which is always interesting. Also, they’re flawed characters. They each have deep pasts and emotions that they grapple with while solving crimes. I enjoy complicated characters. The stories are intriguing. I live in the USA so I’m fascinated with series' set in different countries. “Murder by the Lake” is set around the gorgeous Lake Constance, and the stories (so far) cross the borders of Austria and Germany. The languages are Austrian and German with English subtitles. Highly recommend.

5.0 out of 5 starsAwesomely breathtaking
I thought at first I would have a problem watching this because it speaks a language other than English but I found the subtitling Easy-to-Read. That being said I am extremely happy I gave this program a chance. The characters each have their personal flaws and as they solve the Mysteries it just makes them even more believable. The scenery and photography is beautiful and I sometimes pause the program just to look at the beautiful views. I have vertigo and in one of the scenes it showed a car driving along a winding Mountain Road with a drop directly to the Sea. The filming was done so well I actually experienced dizziness and had to look away for a second. Kudos to the cast and camera crew. A beautiful job well done.

3.0 out of 5 starsOK Series, Bogged Down With Personal Details
Like The Bridge series, this crime drama involves two cooperating police departments, from Germany and Austria. Also like The Bridge, one of the characters - the female detective, Hannah - has some sort of personality problem. Aspberger's? Childhood trauma? The result is that she is good at her job, extremely data driven, but cannot relate to people emotionally. Her more-emotional male partner is married to his job, but not to his family. He lies to his wife, who thinks he's having affairs. So, a lot of Murder By The Lake concerns these familial tensions, which drag on and on and interrupt the flow of the crimes and their solutions. I like murder, mayhem and detective work in crime dramas, not jealous wives who feel neglected. I do some major skipping in this show.

5.0 out of 5 starsExcellent series
Refreshingly not-Euro-gray mysteries with touches of humor, likeable characters, and satisfying plots. Thanks, MHz, you're the best (e.g., Montalbano, Nero Wolfe, Agatha Christie's Criminal Games, Wallander, etc., etc.).

5.0 out of 5 starsWell written
We enjoy many mysteries yet feel this is a very well written and well played mystery drama. Even though we are reading sub-titles we've often been able to understand what they are saying without those subtitles, and not because they use English. The characters are made believable with their flaws and problems.

5.0 out of 5 starsFantastic show
This is a really great show! Right up there with Shetland and Broadchurch. The characters are so interesting as are the plots. I hope there is another season soon! Watch this show you will not be disappointed.
