Murphy's Lawless: A Terran Republic Novel Paperback – December 2, 2020

Major Rodger Y. Murphy should have died when his helicopter crashed off the coast of Mogadishu in November, 1993. Instead, he woke up in August, 2125, in a binary star system 152 light years from home. Without any memory of the otherworldly abductors who spirited them away in cold sleep, Murphy and 100 other “Lost Soldiers” have been retrieved and awakened by officers of the Consolidated Terran Republic.
Promising to return to the 55 Tauri B system after completing a distant mission, they leave the twentieth century castaways with a daunting objective: establish a base of operations on the main world, using local allies they have yet to recruit and enemy equipment they have yet to seize.
If that weren’t hard enough, 55 Tauri A, the system’s primary star, is rapidly approaching, and the technologically superior powers from that neighboring system always visit during the close approach . . . to raid, pillage, and cull the locals.
Worse, the Lost Soldiers left behind with Murphy were the losers and ne’er-do-wells deemed “sub-optimal” for inclusion on the rescue mission. Defiant and determined to live down that judgment, they have given themselves a different, more suitable label:
Note: this book incorporates six previous novellas and adds 40k of new worldbuilding from Charles E. Gannon that Caine Universe readers won't want to miss!

Several of the novellas remain almost almost untouched beyond the connective material which surrounds them while others are expanded to include more interaction with the characters from other novellas. Timeline issues are resolved and you begin to see how a very small group of displaced and struggling individuals come together to implement change on R’bak in both a personal and a worldwide manner.
In a couple of places additional chapters or replacement chapters have been added to the original novellas in an almost seamless way. One of my least favorite novellas was made much stronger in this manner. In all, this new “remastered” version takes what was a group of six strong novellas and fuses them together into a single tightly woven novel with multiple viewpoints of a change in the destiny of a world that is only just beginning.
Loved the authors and the writing, I loved the book and you won’t be disappointed!
I'm talking about the Caine Riordan/Tales of the Terran Republic series: Fire with Fire (Nebula Awards Best Novel nominee AND Compton Crook Award winner), Trial by Fire (Nebula Awards Best Novel nominee), Raising Caine (Nebula Awards Best Novel nominee AND Dragon Award nominee), Caine's Mutiny (Dragon Award nominee), and Marque of Caine.
The first three books of this series were nominated by fellow sf writers as one of the five best sf novels for that year [i.e., for the Nebula Award].
I had been waiting and waiting for book six to come out.
I had participated in the Kickstarter that started the Terran Republic shared world series Lost Signals. This is when the original author invites fellow sf writers into his/her sandbox and says come on it and write sf novels in my world.
What I did NOT understand is that the first novel after that Lost Signals anthology was the kickoff of the shared world continuation of the series!
So, I just finished Murphy's Lawless (as the shared world series is called).
This sets up a whole new set of characters IN CAINE RIORDAN's universe with the well-drawn alien races that I had enjoyed so much in the original series.
I had not realized it but some of the sf authors I did not know in Lost Signals turned out to be the very authors involved with Murphy's Lawless.
I now have six additional books to read written by those shared sf world authors, EDITED by original author Charles E. Gannon.
To repeat, I am so happy!
To cap it all off, when I finished Murphy's Lawless, in the part where the author is telling about what comes next, I have now found out that there will be an additional three Caine Riordan books plus plenty more in the new shared sf world series!
AND spinoff series by some of the shared sf world authors, in particular Kacey Ezell (who is continuing to write about one of my favorite new protagonist characters!). Ms. Ezell’s new book is called Sundown (in the Murphy's Lawless: Watch the Skies series) [published March 2021].
And, of course, I totally enjoyed Murphy's Lawless (the gateway book to the continuing series!)
Highly recommended for those who love hard sf, space opera, and plenty of character-driven action!
I'd also like to particularly call out the Ezell section/novella, which, besides the main plot, is a romance of flying a helicopter. It's wonderful.
