This is a collection of stories centering around a master level musical composer who wrote some significant works historically. Here we see his path bent in a different direction by the arrival of Grantville in the Ring Of Fire and its influence on music of the early 17th century.

The story is worth five stars. The shoddy editing (the book is full of bracketed editorial comments that aren’t meant for the final manuscript) is typical of things since a new Gazette editor took control, cost two stars.

If I were not a musician myself, and the child of a superb musician, I would have given this a 3. Since I am both I found th story and back story(romance) enjoyable. The narrative usage of letters is an old tool in sci fi so it caused no discord. I have enjoyed Carrico's additions to the ROF series.

Another good story about The Ring and its impact on early music. Some interesting characters being stimulated by the inoculation of "Uptime notation, instruments, music, and CDs create quite a stir "Downtime". Music is a fertile area for alternate authors in this most excellent series.

Being in a collection hurts these story. As two of the stories I have read before in other collections. One has a huge date error which threw me out of the story. Guest singer arrives on Dec 21 but has rehearse scheduled before she arrives in town. The flashback and flashforward story does not foreshadow but screams the conclusion of the story.
