Then, there's something fishy going on at sports day. All the athletic kids seem to be losing their sporting abilities while Tom's evil big brother, Mark, has suddenly become amazing at every single sport. Can Frankie help Pradeep and Tom to foil Mark's evil plans? Or will Mark and his pet vampire kitten, Fang, take home the gold?

In SPORTS-DAY SHOWDOWN, Tom, Pradeep and Frankie are competing in an inter-school sports day (well, Pradeep's competing in the chess; Tom's reserve in the track team) but Mark's also there with his evil vampire kitty sidekick, Fang. As the other competitors seem to lose their sporty ability, Mark is getting better and better. Can the trio get to the bottom of the mystery and foil Mark's evil plot for world domination?
The fourth in Mo O'Hara's ZOMBIE GOLDFISH series is another highly entertaining read divided into two stories, both of which feature the dastardly machinations of Tom and Pradeep's respective older, evil brothers. As ever, the friendship between Tom and Pradeep (who I absolutely love for his geekery and allergies) is well depicted and O'Hara is brilliantly imaginative at finding new ways to transport Frankie and get him to save the day. Of the two stories, SPORTS-DAY SHOWDOWN was probably my favourite because Camille (a reserve athlete for a rival school filled with over-competitive students) is a much-needed female presence and it was good to see her help the boys to save the day. Plus it was also good to see Sami back again, especially when it comes with Frankie's hypnotic powers. I do like the way Fang the vampire kitty is fitting into proceedings as well, mainly because it really helps to humanise Mark and makes me think that maybe he isn't quite as irredeemably evil as he likes to think he is. The illustrations by Marek Jagucki are a great accompaniment to the text and really contribute to the fun and I loved the little flicker illustration of Frankie in the corner of the page. All in all, I think this is another fun read for readers aged 7+ and I'm really looking forward to the next one.
