My Dog: The Paradox: A Lovable Discourse about Man's Best Friend (Volume 3) (The Oatmeal) Hardcover – May 7, 2013
Enhance your purchase
This eponymous comic became an instant hit when it went live on The Oatmeal.com and was liked on Facebook by 700,000 fans. Now fans will have a keepsake book of this comic to give and to keep.
In My Dog: The Paradox, Inman discusses the canine penchant for rolling in horse droppings, chasing large animals four times their size, and acting recklessly enthusiastic through the entirety of their impulsive, lovable lives. Hilarious and heartfelt, My Dog: The Paradox eloquently illustrates the complicated relationship between man and dog.
We will never know why dogs fear hair dryers, or being baited into staring contests with cats, but as Inman explains, perhaps we love dogs so much “because their lives aren’t lengthy, logical, or deliberate, but an explosive paradox composed of fur, teeth, and enthusiasm.”

Other reviewers have noted that this material is free on The Oatmeal website "so why bother?". I first read this cartoon some time ago and loved it. Every time I read it, I enjoyed it. That is precisely why I wanted to have a physical copy. I picked up several copies for friends and family as well. The digital age is amazing, but there is nothing quite so comforting as holding a book in your hands.

You just can’t beat “5 Very Good Reasons to Punch a Dolphin in the Mouth.”
Still, if you have a dog, then Inman knows your life in this book. He personifies it perfectly with two very neurotic, funny, excitable, and maybe lovable characters.
I especially liked the scenes of when the doorbell rings insanity ensues, and Jenkins doesn’t know how to come back when playing fetch.
Note: some of the content (and language) is NSFW-ish and not suitable for kids, so if you were thinking about getting this for your 7-year-old friend Timmy and his Corgi Welsh, forget about it. Like I said earlier, the whole book is available via online webcomic, so just check it out (it's a quick read) and decide for yourself who it's appropriate to gift to.
