Poets have long observed the world in a mindful way. They point out beauty we might have missed, draw our attention to our inner thoughts, and call us to see our society in new ways.

But as daily life become more and more chaotic, children grow distracted. According to the CDC, 9.4% of children have ADHD and 7% have anxiety/depression. And these numbers continue to climb. Gr 2-6-This short collection of poems aims to teach children how to slow down and be aware of their thoughts and environment. The text uses meditation and affirmation techniques to introduce the concept of mindfulness. Simple language explains actions that readers can follow. However, the format and layout of some poems may be difficult to digest for children who experience reading challenges. The variation of fonts within the same poem and the black-on-blue backgrounds may also present reading difficulties. The illustrations are rendered in shades of blue and white, echoing the title and cover imagery of looking up at the sky, but do little to enhance the feeling or meaning of the poems. This volume could serve as a good read-aloud option for a classroom or library to teach guided mindfulness or meditation exercises. Georgia Heard, author of The Arrow Finds its Mark, is a writer, speaker, and educational consultant who teaches and speaks to audiences in the United States and around the world about writing and using poetry with children. She lives in Singer Island, Florida.

Isabel Roxas has illustrated several children's books, including Let Me Finish! by Minh Lê, A Day in the Market by May Tobias-Papa, and the 2018 Newbery Medal Winner Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly. When Isabel is not crafting pictures and stories, she is making little creatures out of clay. --This text refers to the hardcover edition.

Georgia Heard is a writer, poet, and educator. She is the author of numerous books on teaching writing, anthologies, poems and children’s books. A graduate of Columbia University, a founding member of the Teachers College Reading and Writing Project, and a leader in the field of teaching writing, she is a frequent presenter in schools and at conferences around the world.

Isabel Roxas is an author, illustrator, and avid reader.
She has illustrated several books for young readers, including the Newbery award-winning Hello Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly, The Littlest Viking by Alexandra Penfold and Let Me Finish! by Minh Le.
She was born in the Philippines, raised on luscious mangoes, old wives' tales, and monsoon rains. She is now based in NYC where she writes and illustrates stories, designs books, bakes delicious things and creates small objects out of resin and clay.
Isabel was a recipient of the Fulbright Scholarship and has been awarded the Philippine National
Children's Book Award in 2010 for illustrating Day at the Market by May Tobias-Papa and in 2018
for Mang Andoy's Signs by Mailin Paterno.
Her debut comic for young readers, The Adventures of Team Pom: SQUID HAPPENS will publish in June 2021

How did Georgia Heard know I needed this book right now? I have been teaching second graders on Zoom since August, and we all know how hard this year has been for teachers and students alike. We also happen to be right in the middle of a poetry writing unit, so I couldn't have asked for a more perfect collection of poems to share with students. This book is the perfect kid-friendly, but not patronizing, way to practice taking calm breaths, slowing down our minds, being mindful and kindful...exactly what we all need right now. I know I will use it daily in my class, and for many years to come.

I feel this is the perfect gift for teachers to give students after a very hard year. And really any child elementary middle or high school with benefit from this book it has wonderful mindfulness strategies for their social emotional well-being toolbelt. I wish I had had this book for my children when they were little and probably would’ve started reading as they were babies. Later when life throws them curveballs, they could call to mind one of these sweet poems. My only complaint is I wish it was in paperback form so it would be an easier gift to purchase in mass quantities.
