This movie is a total mess, in the best possible way. All of the actors seem to have gotten invested in their roles and they really sell the deadpan parody. Because they believe in their silly superpowers they get you committed as well, and once you buy into this film it just opens up. The throwaway lines and deadpan jokes never let up, and the humor is there in the settings, the props, the dialogue, the little bits of business, and all of the details. You can watch this movie a dozen times and still find new jokes and fresh bits you missed or didn't appreciate the first time around.

A fun flick ahead of its time!
Verified purchase
This!Movie! We own this in dvd and digital (Prime video) format, before that we even had it on VHS.

Honestly it was ahead of its time and it really doesn’t get the recognition I feel it deserves. It’s quirky and charming in a ridiculous way. We watch it easily twice a year and it could quickly become one of your great Horror alternative Halloween go-to flicks.

Ben Stiller is always awesome. William H. Macy is phenomenal. His dry humor and present wit makes me a huge fan of his all over again. I miss seeing Janeane Garofalo these days. Paul Reubens...Lol! Just always so silly and perfectly weird. His character is quintessential proof that potty humor (in this case, flatulence) is always funny.

If the movie has any “flaws” I’d say there’s a little bit of intermittent corny improv dialogue that occasionally goes on a little too long making it slightly awkward, but this can be easily forgiven when you judge the film on a whole. Also I’m the less desirable category, neither of us are huge Smashmouth fans but at the time of this movies release a couple of their songs were very popular.

Overall it’s just a fun movie to sit back and giggle at the ridiculous nature of the story and characters and obvious intention of not taking itself too seriously. We love it! Hope you do too.

An All Time Family Favorite
Verified purchase
This is a family all time favorite! I watched this movie with my two oldest kids when they were young and they were upset that I had not shared this movie yet with their younger brother! So of course, not having this movie in my library-and no store carrying this, I was happy to be able to order from amazon to view immediately! My oldest son joined us for this viewing and to sit and hear my now 26 year old son laugh like he did when he was 10 made my heart happy. Of course the 9 year old loved the movie too. No movie with a super power of farting will ever be considered bad to my boys!

***** I did not received this product at a discount/free cost in exchange for an honest and unbiased review. My opinions are my own and were not influenced by the company in any way. Please rate my review as "Helpful" if it helped you in any way. It's greatly appreciated because it helps me too! Thank you!

A Classic Then - A Classic Now!

I remember watching this movie on VHS a long time ago and completely forgot about it as the years went by. Then, I was on Hulu looking for something random to watch and I found this film on the list. I was like "Hey! It's here!" and watched it. After finishing the movie, I hopped on Amazon to see if I can find a DVD copy to add to my collection. I was shocked to see a Blu-Ray version for sale and quickly ordered it! My new copy arrived a few days later.

Now, this movie has some dumb but funny moments and it is not afraid to poke fun at itself and at comic books. If that sounded odd then I apologize but you will know what I am talking about without getting into too much detail. Heck, just look at the film case cover if you need a hint on what it could be about! In my opinion, best cover ever!

It's a funny movie and just like "Who framed Roger Rabbit?", it cannot be replicated in today's era of film and television. It's a product/project of its time and for that, I'm grateful this film exists.

Best B-list Superhero Comedy Ever Made.
Verified purchase
Great cast, slapstick/goofy but any film with Tom Waits as a non-lethal weapons designer (check out the Blame Thrower) who helps the heroes refurbish the finest battle jitney ever made (Herkimer!) has my attention. Underrated IMO, with some pretty Brazil-esque scenes and stage design.

Decent, but wait for the 4k remaster this year
Verified purchase
As soon as I received it, they announced a 4k remaster due to release sometime in 2021, but I was still happy to get this as it was back in stock. The movie is an underrated gem, and the BluRay is ok. The PQ seems to be from an older master, possibly from the HD-DVD days or even the original DVD, but it's still a decent image, though the 4k remaster will be fully loved. The sound is really good, plenty of surrounds and decent subwoofer support, but won't match the likes of modern comic book films with Dolby Atmos. Extras are ok, with a nice commentary, some deleted scenes, a making-of featurette and a trailer, but it could've had some more stuff, especially the music video to "All Star" would've been nice, but overall it's a decent little package. Just hold off for the 4k remaster if you need a Mystery Men fix.

Turn of the Millenium Satire
Verified purchase
This movie is another of of Ben STiller's satire films which pokes fun while still be respectful to the material it's making fun of. Basically set in a Tim Burton/Joel Schumacher version of modern day, Mystery Men embraces the slightly ridiculous otherworldliness of 1980s Batman and fills it with the sarcasm, cynicism and utter confusion that was the end of the 90s in America.

As a result, we get a film that is very strange, but still hilarious and far better than it has any right to be.

cute, often funny, but drags
Verified purchase
A decent superhero parody movie. That's a hard category to handle well unless it is a cartoon. This one has a novel concept, reasonable special effects and star studded cast. So why is it only three stars?
Have you ever heard about jokes that are funny twice but fall flat afterward? This movie repeats gags and jokes way too often past the "second funny" case, and there are scenes that drag, too. There are 15 minutes of cheap humor that should have been removed to make a tight, fun action comedy movie.
