I am a huge fan of everything Stephen Fry does. He is a treasure to our time. He is open-hearted, kind, knowledgeable and a great human being. Sitting down with this book is like having tea with Stephen. What a wonderful experience.

The subject of the book is Greek Mythology. You would think that Ovid and other authors have beat that old horse to death. But, Stephen breathes new life into these stories. His prodigious store of knowledge finds its way into every story. You marvel and laugh and are even shocked by the stories. Very worth while book. Please read it.

There is one negative I suppose. It is not a novel. There is no real plot to keep you enthralled. Instead, I find that I have not sat down with Stephen for a while. So that brings me back to the book. What story do you have for me today?

Stephen Fry breaks down even unfamiliar myths and relates them hysterically to modern life and speech. Only criticism is an unavoidable feature of a comprehensive volume: LOTS and LOTS of Greek characters and place names that are difficult to keep straight.

I have finished this book and it is the best of 2022 so far and likely will stay that way. I say this because this book is a masterpiece and has made it into my all time favorite list.

I was going to update my review but you know what? I like the way it stands.

I wrote my review as I read which I never do. But I did that with this one.

So, my review is below, unfiltered, comments and love for the book pouring forth from me. I just cannot bear to erase them. So that is my review below. And I say this again before I hit the "done" button. This is an absolute masterpiece.

Doing some quite different than I normally do -- editing my review as I read. I have to. This book is a masterpiece. Added to favorites and I'm only 50 % done!

I can't help it. I am enthralled. And I believe -- unless this book somehow takes a bad turn -- I will be labeling it under 'Favorite books."

I have always held an interest in Greek Mythology though I am by no means an expert.

I've read about these times -- and the beautiful, Mythical, compelling and captivating world of the Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Greek times - since I was little.

Reading this is like coming face to face with my childhood. It's like reaching back in time, to that simpler place of innocence, when one read purely for the joy and magnificence of the pages that danced in front of you.

I don't have that feeling of firsts much anymore. And I have desperately wanted to go back in time, to relive the time of the Olympians.

But never could I find a book about them to get lost in. Not in my adult years. Not like when I was in childhood.

Well - I am lost in the pages if this book. It has beguiled me, left me drowsy and drunk with awe, I am speechless at the magic in these pages.

I am deliberately reading slowly so as not to finish and have to say goodbye to soon.

Once I do, I might just go back and reread it all again!

It's been a stormy day, with strong winds and snow and ice. It's been a tough time psychologically too. But this book has made me smile. What a gift!

How lovely to find this enchanting compilation! And what a wonderful and loving tribute to these Gods and Goddesses and to this ageless, timeless era of beauty.

Audio retelling of the myths -- with Fry's POV and insights, is an excellent audio book -- although, if you aren't remembering your mythology clearly, the first disk about the Titans, chucked full of information, is a bit dry and requires careful listening to get through. But on Disk 2, beginning with the story of the rise of Zeus, Fry's thoughts and interjections come through and add interest to the retelling of these stories and his perspective. Recommend highly!

I've always been a fan of greek mythology stories and retellings but realizing that I've only heard the most well known stories I wanted to familiarize myself with the larger world of greek myths. I have to say I absolutely love Stephen Fry's modern retelling. His narration is great: clear and a little cheeky and he does his best to organize the myths as chronologically as possible. I also love this (and the others in the trilogy) cover as its a simple but beautiful cover.

Really enjoyed reading this book. It wasn't what I was after but I liked it all the same. I read the Illiad and the Odyssey and really loved the style of writing and the exciting story lines. This book is more an exposé of the many Greek gods, but written by Steven Fry in his own inimitable way. Ancient myths written in modern language.
Its interesting and enjoyable and does a good jobs of put as much as possible together in a single book without ever making you feel this it is study material for an exam.
I'd definitely recommend

Is this Stephen Fry's bid to become accepted as a "national treasure"? If so he must try harder. I realise that Mr Fry has made a career out of being arch and a little bit patronising, in a mildly amusing way, but here it conflicts with the subject matter. Do you want an insight into the Greek Myths? I remember being quite impressed by Robert Graves treatment of this matter some years ago and can, therefore, recommend it. This piece of twaddle - not so much.

I wanted an easy to read selection of some of the most popular Greek myths for my wife who has never read them. I also wanted to read them again. I should have checked the reviews before I bought this and the follow up Heroes. There is a particularly accurate one in the Guardian. It is basically whether you like Stephen Fry's writing style (drole, Wodehouse-like) and whether you feel this style brings the myths to life and into the modern age.

Unfortunately I do not like this writing style at all - I prefer simple and direct rather than verbose - and in particular I hated the attempt to be drole with such ancient myths that have survived so long. So I purchased Edith Hamilton's famous version Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes. This is much more what I was after. Simple prose, sensitive to the original poet's style, and a great range of stories.

My mistake - should have read the reviews before buying. Each to his own. Some people will love it.
