Robert McCammon is a superbly gifted author who has written several outstanding horror novels...but alas, this one comes up short. A story about a lost Nazi U-boat resurfacing in the Caribbean with a crew of vengeful zombies ought to be quite a thriller, but McCammon doesn't do much with this idea, especially for the first half of his book. There is almost no action for over 50% of the novel, which instead focuses on the rather uninteresting main characters and the equally uninteresting internal minutiae of the small island community in which they live. McCammon's prose remains clean and sharp, but while THE NIGHT BOAT is well-written it is also poorly plotted, and most of the novel is an unrewarding slog to get through. The second half of the story, and especially the last 30 pages or so, is far more dramatic and involving, but by that point the reader is likely just to want to make it to the end. THE NIGHT BOAT is based on a good idea, but lacks the solid characters and intensity that it needs for the story to come alive.

This reader could tell it was one of the author's early books due to the very florid writing style. It wasn't as crisp or sharp as his later works, such as "Boy's Life," or "Swan's Song." I wonder how he would write it now, knowing what he knows. I'm sure it would be so much better. I loved the setting; the premise needed a bit work, though. There are parts that are gory, graphic, and gruesome, too. Enjoy!

It took me longer than usual to finish this book, because it just didn't capture my attention. I had to keep re-reading, because I would zone out the first time through.
Night Boat isn't a bad book, but it's definitely not one of McCammon's better works.
I felt no real personal connection to any of the characters, and my frustration with Kip's refusal to acknowledge the truth, despite what he witnessed with his own eyes, almost had me throwing this book at a wall.

This was one of McCammon's first books and, while his writing had not progressed to the level it is now, it was raw and a fun read. He is a first rate story teller, one of the best. I have read this book before, back when it was first released. I simply wanted the hard cover edition for my collection. The book came to me quickly in very good condition as described.

I’ve read a ton by this author. I think this is one of his earlier works. This was incredibly scary and visceral. I read this as fast as I could in order to get to the end. Love all of his books. Definitely worth checking out!
