Ridiculous Waste of Time

Reviewers of this book missed the mark tremendously. I find it so discouraging to find a book that gets such glowing reviews only to find myself struggling page by page.

I found this book listed on a website as a must read romance. I'm completely baffled as to how that happened.
This book is set in the future where it seems humans have become hedonists and the entire world has run amuk. Prostitution is a high paying career and guns are outlawed. I found it disappointing that there had to be a political element to the story. Why was the Conservative Senator a bad guy right off the bat? The future in this world looked bleak, dangerous and shallow.

I did not finish this book. I wasn't at all interested in any of the characters that were introduced. They all seemed selfish and unrelatable. The "romance" was nothing more than a simple attraction between two adults. I wasn't interested and I truly can't believe anybody else was. Five thumbs down.

I've read this series a couple of years back when I was still a student (had more time to read then) and I loved it! The problem was that I used to borrow the hardcopies from libraries, hence I had to read whatever was available in the library instead of going chronologically down the series. Bought a kindle recently, and the first book that came to mind was this! And I still love it reading it the second time as much as I did the first time :) I can't wait to go down the series one by one!

There are two things that intrigue me most when I got started on Book 1 of this fantastic series; firstly, to know more about this futuristic world where interplanetary travel is very much possible, and secondly, to follow the development of the lead couple who seem so different in characters, yet so perfect for one another.

Reading this series is like watching a TV serial for me. I love it that the books are still coming out year after year. I strongly encourage those who love crime-related cum romance novels to get started on these!

Fun, and Suspenseful with Sizzling Heat and Wonderful Characters

When I started this series I didn't have this review blog and I just realized I have been selfishly keeping this series to myself. I just finished reading the 51st book, and was reflecting on how much these characters have grown since the first book. So I pulled out the paperback to read and found the print too small to read. So now I have a project, to get the rest of these books on my kindle because sometimes I just want to do a reread.

In this book we meet not only the troubled NYPSD Lieutenant Eve Dallas but also the irresistible, charismatic, and gorgeous billionaire Roarke. All set in 2058, which at the time seemed like a long time into the future.

Eve is haunted by her last case in which she had to terminate the perpetrator, not because of him but the circumstances around it. She is expecting to go through the mandatory testing in the morning but her commander assigns her a top priority all data sealed case overriding the testing.

She is partnered with Captain Ryan Feeney, head of the electronics detective division, who was her mentor as she travailed the ranks. The victim Sharon DeBlass is Senator DeBlass' granddaughter and he thinks he can run things his way.

The biggest clue in this is the weapon, a .38 caliper Smith and Wesson handgun at one time standard police issue, now banned and a collector's item. There aren't many out there and the list of owners isn't very long.

One name that comes up as a possible owner of such gun and who's name also appears in the victim's address book is Roarke. Eve is confident she can get to talk to him although Feeney is skeptical.

She's unsuccessful until the funeral, and Roarke is surprised to find out she's a cop. His cop radar didn't go off and he's certainly attracted to this feisty police lieutenant.

Roarke invites Eve to see his collection and offer his weapon for testing. Now that was an interesting evening. I had forgotten how Summerset treated Eve in those first books.

More bodies are showing up, and with the first one sealed it limits what can be said to the press in an effort to gain public support. We meet Nadine Furst, the persistent journalist as she tries for more than just the press conference drivel.

We also meet Eve's best friend Mavis as she sings and dances at The Blue Squirrel an interesting venue, that also becomes her spot to meet with Nadine.

Things with Roarke heat up as Eve eliminates him as a suspect and there's many twists and turns before the pieces come together in this page turning read.

I will will be reading these in order all over again. It's fun to go back to the beginning and meet everyone.

Naked in Death was first released around 20 years when some of the gadgets Eve uses in her fight against crime would have seemed more Sci-fi than anything else but now with advances in technology now seem within reach. Personally I’d love a car that could get me out of traffic jams like hers can. Eve has close to no personal life, rather her entire existence revolves around being a cop and representing the victims as she finds justice for them. She only has two people in her life she would actually call friends – Mavis, a grifter she met early on in her career and Captain Ryan Feeney, her mentor on the force and probably the closest thing to a father she’s ever had. She has very little memory of her early childhood before she was found abused and abandoned in a Dallas alleyway. Indeed this is where her name comes from given to her by a social worker. When a senator’s prostitute daughter is found brutally murdered Eve must solve the crime while fighting not only her attraction to her main suspect Roarke, one of the wealthiest men in the world and a man with secrets of his own but demons from her past as her memories begin to resurface.

Naked in Death is a fast paced, gripping thriller full of mystery, suspense and crime with no holding back on the gory details and some twists in the tail so nothing is too predictable before it reaches a satisfying conclusion. The addition of just the right amount of romance adds to the story and the chemistry between Eve and Roarke was tangible. All in all this was a great start to the series and I’m looking forward to seeing how the characters develop as the series progresses.

I've been hearing great things about J.D. Robb's In Death series for years now - in fact I think it was about 4 years ago that I actually bought my copy of Naked in Death! - but no matter how many friends have recommended it to me I kept putting off starting it. Mainly because it's such an intimidating series, let's face it the series is going from strength to strength with book 43 publishing later this year and that number doesn't even take into account the novellas and short stories! So it wasn't so much that I was worried that I wouldn't like this book but that I was terrified that I would, I mean who really has time to commit to a series of that length? But mainly due to some persistent nagging (thanks for that Aly!) I FINALLY bit the bullet and dove head first into this world and boy I'm glad I did. I just had so much fun with these characters and I'm excited that I get to spend so much more time getting to know them.

I'm not really sure if it's even worth writing a review of this book since pretty much everyone I know seems to have already read it and there are certainly no shortage of other reviews out there but I feel like I probably should though just in case you're one of those people who, like me, have been feeling intimidated by the series and wondering if it's really worth all the fuss it gets. I want to say categorically, based just on the first book, that yes, YES it is worth grabbing a copy of Naked in Death and I hope you end up enjoying it as much as I did!

Even though this book was first published just over 20 years ago it doesn't feel dated thanks to the futuristic setting J.D. Robb has created, the series starts in 2058 so it's not so far into the future that it feels alien but it's just far enough that the author is able to include some interesting technology and make her own rules regarding current laws etc. The setting is well done and we were given enough information to catch my attention without it feeling overwhelming. The focus of this story is definitely the mystery and I though that side was very well handled, it kept me completely hooked and I enjoyed seeing how Eve worked the crime scenes and slowly pieced everything together.

Eve is a tough, no nonsense cop who loves her job and wants to help people, she doesn't remember much about her childhood thanks to repressed memories but readers get a hint of the things she has been through in the form of flashbacks that she suffers. I'm sure there is a lot more left to learn but seeing the vulnerable side of her was quite heartbreaking and it makes me sick to think of the things that she's been through. Eve doesn't want sympathy though, she just wants to focus on the future and doing her job to the best of her ability. It seems like she has a tendency to use her work as a shield against her emotions and she can come across as a little cold at times but that quickly starts to change when she meets Roarke and he starts to get under her skin.

Roarke is a character I've heard so much about so I was really excited to meet him. He's a billionaire businessman with a bit of a shady past and it's hard to tell whether he's 100% on the right side of the law even now. He obviously has a code of honour and there are lines that he won't cross but I suspect that all bets are off when the people he cares about are in trouble. When Eve crosses paths with him it's because he's a suspect in her murder investigation and she's left feeling very conflicted by the attraction she feels towards him, she can't decide if he's really innocent or whether her hormones are leading her astray but at least she is aware of the way her feelings could be affecting her decision making. Roarke is the kind of character who really should raise loads of red flags, he's very possessive and definitely shows more than a few stalker tendencies that I would find REALLY off putting in a real life situation but somehow J.D. Robb pulls it off and she had me falling head over heels for him in spite of the warning signs. So much about him is still a mystery and I can't wait to dig deeper into his past and find out what makes him tick.

As we get to know him it becomes clear that Roarke is just as messed up as Eve and they understand each other on a level that people who don't have their experiences would never quite be able to achieve. As a couple they just work so although things to progress between them very quickly it didn't feel unbelievable. I do wish the author had taken more time to get them to this point of their relationship, considering the length of the series I think we could have had that delicious will they / won't they pull between them for at least a couple of books, but even though things have moved quickly they still don't know each other that well and I'm sure we're going to enjoy seeing them open up and share more of their secrets. In fact, I'd rather have them become a couple in the first book than have to deal with yet another dreaded love triangle so I'm not going to complain about the romance even a little bit!

Naked in Death is a fantastic start to this series and it's definitely left me eager to spend more time with these characters. I think my bank balance will suffer when I rush out and buy the rest of the series but I'm looking forward to having so many books to binge on!

I’m a huge fan of Nora Roberts but this is the first of her JD Robb series I’ve read. I was a bit put off at first because I didn’t understand a lot of the “jargon”. Then it dawned on me that it was set in the future (2058 not confirmed until much later on). Guns are now antiques and illegal, replaced by lasers. Space travel is everyday but political wheeling and dealing is still going on. I liked Eve and loved Roarke! Maybe I should’ve expected this in a police procedural but I struggled with the graphic descriptions of murder and abuse. It’s very well written and recommended if this is your genre. But I mostly read in bed and some of the scenes were too much for the middle of the night. No criticism of the author but I’ll probably give the rest of the series a miss.

I have raced through this one! Naked in Death by J. D. Robb a.k.a Nora Roberts!
I am a big fan of books by Nora Roberts and I have known for a while she had this crime series out under J.D. Robb but I was hesitant to start it. I was worried it wouldn’t live up to my expectations and would be too different from the Nora books I love. Also it is a long series of 50 books and growing so quite a commitment to start!
Well, I can tell you, I shouldn’t have worried because it blew me away! I spent every second I had reading a page here and a page there until it was finished! I now regret not starting it sooner and books 2 and 3 (of 50 😯) have been ordered!

I love Eve Dallas the cop and her uncertain past and no nonsense attitude! I love Roarke and how mysterious the wealthy businessman is! Written 25 years ago but set in a futuristic time, this book captured me from the get go!
