This book was a Louis and Angel thing. I like Louis and Angel BUT only in context with their relationship with Parker. They add a different dimension to his character and personality. I would probably not purchased the book of I knew that Parker was not prominent in it. They are not interesting to me without him.
I don't know if the author has grown tired of the character and wanted a break or is too busy with other projects to consider fans like me who have invested both time and money in the series. We wait patiently for a new one each year, now 2 years and on to a third.
We are fans of the Parker series and of your writing of it, Mr. Connolly. Please stop keeping us waiting for the next hit.
Loved the teaser with Jennifer at the very end, and earlier when CP is identified as key for Jennifer's "existence". Ready for the next instalment!
John Connolly is a must buy, must read author.
This stand-alone is easy to follow but at times difficult to read due to emotions evoked. No editing errors, gratuitous violence or drag-you-down drama.
Intriguing and compelling storyline that draws the reader into each scene. The paranormal aspect blends easily with the excellent history lessens. This features Louis, Angel and Jennifer with Charlie in the background. Flexible procedures, actions and reactions. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and memorable dialogue.
“And, yes, the Sixth Commandment declared “Thou shalt not kill,” but Mrs. Bondarchuk had always believed that Moses, in returning from Mount Sinai, had neglected to bring with him a final tablet, the one containing all the fine print, possibly because his arms were already full.“
“Such rationalizations were endemic to Frend’s profession, and explained why so many lawyers were destined to burn in hell.”
“If you asked God for help, there was no guarantee it would arrive, or that God had even listened. But with Mr. Parker, if you were a good person in distress, and you asked for his help, you got it.”
I will re-read this story and always look forward to, pre-order when possible, new works by this author.

Although Charlie Parker does not feature heavily in this novel, his presence was welcome as was that of his late daughter Jennifer. There is often an element of the supernatural in Connolly’s writing but it is never overplayed. And talking of guest appearances, I was delighted to see the Fulcis make an appearance.
As is always the case with Connolly, the research was impeccable and that shines through in the writing. Louis and Angel are as entertaining as ever. Like a long time married couple; bickering and resentful yet full of love and only too aware of the transient nature of their chosen professions. Such as they are.
I love Connolly’s writing style. This isn’t up to the same dizzy heights of the greatest CP novels but it’s a fine read and ropes in one of the most fascinating of conflicts in living memory.
