At first, I was worried I wouldn’t have as much time with the lovable Marigold crew but I was not disappointed. They were all there and I could never get enough of West. The additional characters including Holland really helped to take this adventure to the next level and there were quite a few surprises along the way. I don’t want to give anything away but I loved these books and I am sure that it’s a series that I will be rereading.
Story (5/5): This story was so good. Fable starts out the book as a prisoner to one of her father’s ex-thugs. Her kidnapping leads to a surprise from her past that she never could have guessed. There is a lot of amazing adventure, as well surprising twists and turns, and some intriguing intrigue in this book. Everyone around her seems to have secrets and she needs to survive both the unveiling of these secrets and her adventures to finally find peace.
Characters (5/5): This continues to have amazing characterization throughout the book. We learn some stunning secrets about nearly every character and there is a lot of character growth as well. I loved the characters in this story; they are so human and yet so hopeful.
Setting (5/5): We journey to a new part of the world in this book and it is just as amazing as all the places we visited in the first book. I continue to really love the description of the settings when Fable is doing free dives in the ocean. The description in here is excellent and settings really come alive for the reader.
Writing Style (5/5): This book is effortless to read, the writing flows beautifully and the amazing description makes the whole world really come alive. Everything about the writing here is perfection. I really enjoyed Young’s “Sky in the Deep” series as well. There is just something about Young’s writing style that really works well for me. I do think that this Fable series was a step up in quality from the “Sky in the Deep” series.
My Summary (5/5): Overall I really loved both this book and this whole duology. This was awesome young adult adventure fantasy at its best. The description, the world, the characters, the adventure...all of it was amazing. I would definitely recommend it to those who enjoy adventure fantasy. I can’t wait to see what Young comes up with next!!
Namesake opens where Fable left off. Fable is aboard the Luna, Zola’s ship, with Clove at the head.
Of course seeing the man you thought would never betray your father, standing on a ship with a captain who just killed you would probably make you a little grumpy.
For the first several pages I feel that all Fable does is glare at Clove for doing this unspeakable thing. The only thing that pulls her attention away is the fact that Zola is headed out of the Narrows and toward the Unnamed Sea.
Fable must put her grievances with her father’s former navigator aside as she navigates her own perilous waters.
From here the story only gets juicier. The histories and plot twists that Young comes up with are perfect for this series!
Eventually West shows up. Trying not to spoil anything, but you know he’s got to be in the sequel.
So West shows up and is a complete idiot! He is still falling into his old pattern of saving the the damsel in distress who don’t need no man!
I feel strongly about this. West is a good character who is only trying to do the right thing. But some communication would save everyone a whole lot of hurt!
But the lack thereof makes for a good plot. So I really can’t be complaining too much.
All that said, it makes for a good character and a good story.
Again, Young does an amazing job of giving us a world that we can live in. Bastian is a beautiful city with beautiful, if slightly rude, people.
I love the juxtaposition of Fable and the characters from the Narrows to all of Bastian. Young sets this up to be pirates walking into Buckingham Palace. Great!
I do want to touch on Saint for just a moment. I really don’t want to spoil anything and it’s going to be really hard, but let me just say this. Saint is my new favorite character in this series.
I liked him in the first book. He was stoic and secretive, but still looked out for his daughter. But in Namesake, Saint becomes a new man and I love it!
Young again gives us a thrilling, beautifully written adventure to explore and fall in love with. I couldn’t have asked for more from this book.
I am asking, however, for a couple of spin-offs. Young has said that this is the finale to the Fable series, but that doesn’t mean that she can’t stay in the same world, even if she totally set this last book up for the possibility of a return to Fable and her story.
If you love fast paced action and romance, this is the perfect series for you. I can’t recommend this series enough! So good!
