About Nathan Lowell
About the time I was in sixth grade, back in rural Maine, I remember telling my grandmother, "When I grow up, I wanna have a house under ground and that's where I'll keep my computer."
She asked, "What will you do with it?"
"I don't know. It hasn't been built yet."
My grandparents, being wise in the ways of young boys, nodded sagely and changed the subject.
That was 1965.
Now, half a century later, I'm sitting in my cellar--halfway across the country from my roots on the rock-bound coast--typing this on my computer.
I wasn't particularly prescient in my prediction, rather it grew from my love of all things science fiction.
Through all the changes wrought through politics, climate, and age, my love of science fiction literature remained constant. It brought me through wars, storms, sickness, health, marriage, divorce, fatherhood, failure, and success. My love for technology -- which initially grew from the tiny seeds planted by Heinlein and Norton, Bradbury and Asimov, Simak and Pohl -- blossomed with the advent of the internet and found full bloom with the world wide web.
Late in 2004, I discovered podcasting and the community of content creators that this new distribution channel enabled. In 2007, I joined it when I released my first science fiction novel, Quarter Share, at Podiobooks.com. Now--eleven books, over 170 hours of audio, and ten million downloads later--I find myself a full time author, narrator, and podcaster.
Welcome to my world.

Blog postI’m late on purpose. I had a meeting with my doctor scheduled for this morning so I waited until I knew what he was going to say.
The bad news: It’s cancer.
The good news: It’s treatable.
The next few months are probably going to suck, but I should recover.
Status: The Wizard’s Cat
I have had a few epiphanies about that story. Why it’s so hard for me to find the story. What the story is about. All that. Fingers crossed that the Good News will free my brain3 weeks ago Read more -
Blog postI remember I had great plans, wonderful energy. Even walked a few days early in the month. The good ship foundered on a collection of misadventures, some of which I can share. Others, not so much.

Chapter 12 in Hermit of Lammas Wood has chapter 15’s audio. Unfortunately chapter 15 is also chapter 15. I got the correct files from Artistic Whispers and corrected the uploads, but it’ll take a bit for them to work through the system. Sorry about that.

Blog postThe first step to solving a problem is admitting you have one. Last month’s late post, along with my mid-month email, had me taking stock and taking steps, not just making plans.
So it’s now March and I’m roaring – if only to wake myself up and get this circus moving again.

Blog postOn pretty much everything, it seems.
I haven’t any new news. I’ve made zero progress this year so far.
I’m still reading a lot. That seems like it matters even when I haven’t been able to focus on anything else.
What I Am I Reading? The last book was E. M. Foner’s Con Living, EarthCent Universe Book 3.
I found it pretty engaging, humorous in the right places. I first started reading Foner’s work with Date Night at Union Station. This series is set in the same u4 months ago Read more -
Blog postLooking back at 2021, I didn’t do a lot of things I wanted to do. Most of my goals fell far short of my intentions. Rather than getting depressed about the things I didn’t do and laying out grand plans for making it right in 2022, I thought I’d talk about what I did manage to pull out of my hat.
First, I wrote 413,367 words. That’s four novels worth of stories in the pipeline. Three Ishmael books that need second draft editing and third draft polish. It’s over 100,000 words toward a f5 months ago Read more -

My NaNoWriMo ended with 60k new words in this title. It’s a mess right now but I like where it’s going.

No progress. Been focused on new words. These stories still live rent-free in my head, though. I’m looking forward to clearing away the Cat first.

Blog postOctober was not my finest hour. Or even a good week. Mostly it boiled down to distress over The Wizard’s Cat.

I haven’t made any progress on getting those three books polished up. It’s been a struggle to get anything done at all.

I had about a third of a novel written on this. I chipped away at it, throwing words at the page for days at a time only to get to the point where I realized none of it was working. I closed the file and w7 months ago Read more -

Blog postI know it’s not Autumn yet, and back-to-school has happened for a lot of people already but September has always marked the End Of Summer to me. A time to get busy and get back to enjoying cooler weather.
That’s not actually what happens in Colorado. We’ll have 80 and 90 degree days into October, when it will likely snow.
Be that as it may, I’m seeing a trend.

Blog postThe phrase comes from the ancient Romans who believed that the sun rising with the brightest (hottest) star Sirius in Canis Major caused the summer heat. Has nothing to do with lounging around panting in the shade – other than it’s a pretty good thing to do here in the northern hemisphere.

Blog postI think most people visiting this site realize that it’s just an archive of the old stuff. The pages hold a lot of DVD extra material that didn’t make it into the books but I still find useful.
At some point, I’ll migrate those pages over to my main site – nathanlowell.com.

Blog postI’ve just found some new comments on this blog and I’ve answered them.
Sorry for the long delay in responses.
FYI. I update my main site every month and the email notifications for new comments get delivered in my face so I’m less likely to lose a question (or forget to answer).

Blog postWhile I’ve been posting regularly every month over at nathanlowell.com, I just realized I’m not as dedicated to cross posting over here.
So, with a fond farewell, let me say good-bye 2016 and hello 2017. I’m looking forward to my 10th anniversary with Ishmael Wang on the 12th and to many more years to come. With two more Ishmael books (Seeker’s Tales) and two more Natalya books (Smuggler’s Tales) and who knows what happens after that, there’s plenty to look forward to.

If you haven’t seen them, Podium is rolling out the Ishmael Wang stories on Audible. Jeffrey Kafer’s interpretations are different from mine, but they’re the same stories. Titles By Nathan Lowell
For five grand a month and a million dollar chaser, Roger Mulligan didn't care how crazy the old geezer was. All he had to do was keep Joseph Perry Shackleford alive and keep him from squandering the estate for a year.
They didn't tell him about the pixies.
All in a day’s work.
When Ishmael takes the Chernyakova back into Toe-Hold space, he finds a lot more than profit. A quick pass through the Telluride system reveals the answer to one question but leaves him docked without a cargo until the owner of Dark Knight Station makes him an offer he can’t refuse.
Captain Ishmael Wang finally gets the Chernyakova out of the yard and embarks on a voyage into the Toe-Holds where the Confederated Planets Joint Committee on Trade has no authority. Where the law is whatever you say it is as long as you can enforce it.
Where he learns that some will do anything to hide their secrets and everybody has a secret.
A deadly ship with a secret cargo.
Ishmael Wang returns to Port Newmar but ghosts from his past have followed him. His old shipmate, Phillip Carstairs, offers him the opportunity to track down the man who killed his lover. The catch? He must take command of the Chernyakova, a ship that still stinks of death and haunts Ishmael’s nightmares. Together, Phillip and Ismael begin a journey into unknown reaches of the Deep Dark to bring back the man who killed Greta.
When his mother dies in a flitter crash, eighteen-year-old Ishmael Horatio Wang must find a job with the planet company or leave the system--and NerisCo isn't hiring. With credits running low, and prospects limited, he has just one hope...to enlist for two years with a deep space commercial freighter. Ishmael, who only rarely visited the Neris Orbital, and has never been off-planet alone before, finds himself part of an eclectic crew sailing a deep space leviathan between the stars.
Join the crew of the SC Lois McKendrick, a Manchester built clipper as she sets solar sails in search of profit for her company and a crew each entitled to a share equal to their rating.
In his first assignment as an officer, Ishmael Horatio Wang finds himself fresh out of school, wet behind the ears, and way out of his depth. Aboard the William Tinker the senior officers are derelict and abusive, the crew demoralized and undisciplined, and change unwelcomed and dangerous. Can Ishmael use what he learned aboard the Lois McKendrick to help the crew find the ship’s heart? Or will he discover that bucking the system may come at too high a price? Return to the Deep Dark with Ish in this fourth installment of the award winning Solar Clipper Series as he makes the transition from crew to officer.
“Fans of Nathan Lowell’s Solar Clipper series are legion, and for just cause. Each book provides another chapter in the life of one of the most endearing characters to come along in recent memory. Nathan demonstrates that suburb story telling doesn’t require massive space battles or warring aliens, just great characters and a knack for spinning a really compelling tale.” —Michael J. Sullivan, author of the Riyria Revelations
Finalist 2009 Parsec Award for Best Speculative Fiction (Long Form)
Four different women.
One man discovers what it means to be a spacer.
It's a time of change on the Lois McKendrick. Sarah Krugg joins the crew and Ishmael Wang moves to Environmental. After getting accustomed to life aboard a solar clipper, Ishmael must learn a whole new set of skills, face his own fears and doubts, and try to balance love and loss in the depths of space.
Both Ishmael and Sarah must learn to live by the mantra, "Trust Lois." For Sarah, there is the hope of escaping a horrifying past. For Ishmael, he must discover what type of man he wants to become and learn his choices have consequences.
Return with the crew of the SC Lois McKendrick, and set sail in the next installment of the Trader's Tales from the Golden Age of the Solar Clipper. All your favorites return: Ish, Pip, Cookie, Brill, Diane, and Big Bad Bev. You might even discover some new friends as you travel among the stars.
A shuffling of cabins puts Ishmael Horatio Wang in command of the worst ship in the fleet. He learns that being captain doesn't make you infallible and that life in the captain's cabin is filled with new kinds of challenge as he tries to keep the ship moving, the crew out of trouble, and turn a profit to earn his Captain's Share.
In a ship where the officers outnumber the crew, can he keep everybody happy? Welcome to the SC Agamemnon.
A dream job gone horribly wrong.
When circumstances drive Zoya and Natalya to accept an offer from the most powerful organization in the Western Annex, it looks like their ship - literally - comes in. The job fails to live up to its promise and the pair soon find themselves fighting for their lives against a booby trapped ship and its unseen master.
Will they unmask their enemies and survive their Suicide Run?
In this final volume of the Smuggler's Tales, Natalya and Zoya wind up on a mission of mercy back into Toe-Hold space to find out why one of Usoko Mining company's smelters has gone dark. They find an expanding cloud of debris, a crippled ship, and a fleet of mining barges that can't leave the system.
With a damaged second-hand ship and TIC interceptors dogging her step, she nets a smuggling contract that might just get her back on her feet and in control of her destiny. But only if she's willing to make an ore run back to the place she's wanted for murder, and into the arms of the authorities...
...who somehow know she's coming.
