I'm a teacher, and I use these books to write animal reports with my 1st and 2nd grade students. Each animal has a two or four page spread with an average of 12 facts. The text is large so even my students can try reading the facts. After I read about one animal I ask my students what they remember about the animal. Then we decide what to write. I take suggestions from the students and we write two to six sentences about the animal. I keep the writing to just what we learned from the reading and not prior knowledge. I use paper that allows the students to draw a picture and write on lines below. I do a directed drawing to guide them. We select animals with a theme such as, the ocean, African, and forest animals. I usually pick five to six animals to write about per theme. We do a simple intro page where we list all the animals and where they live. We staple all the pages together with a cover page that I create with bubble letters such as, My Ocean Animal Report. Since the students helped come up with every sentence, they can read all the pages. They love the final results.

I bought this for my 3 year old, but my 5 year old likes it too! It includes a lot of common animals you would expect to find in a kids’ animal book (giraffes, lions, tigers, penguins, polar bears, etc) but also a few animals I didn’t expect (desert jerboa, garden spider, meerkats, thorny lizard, a few ocean animals). For many animals, pictures of both babies and adults are shown which my 3 yo loves. Most animals have 4 pages devoted to them but some only have a 2-page spread. Animals are grouped by habitat (desert animals, grassland animals, etc).
My 3 yo doesn’t have the attention span to listen to me read all the text, but we name each animal and I read a few interesting facts for him. Kids ages 5-6 or older would probably listen to or read all the text if they were interested in animals.

Each animal has a section about 2-4 pages long. These pages have very short and simple facts, and big, colorful images. It's short and sweet, but still captivating. There are also plenty of images of cute baby animals, which are always fun to look at!
Another great thing about this book is that it actually has a Parent Tips section with small activities to do with kids based on the animals in the book, and each one works with a different skill. They're all very simple to do, and some are more fun than educational, but fun and education should go hand in hand with kids to keep them interested. There is also a map with names of the animals labelled in each country.
Overall, this is an excellent beginner's book. It's not super detailed, but there are enough facts in there for a young child to retain, and with over 100 pages, that's a relief for parents who end up reading the whole thing to their kids in one sitting like I just did.

This is a fabulous book for young kids! The pages have many stunning and large photos of a good variety of animals. The book is broken up into sections like Desert, Forest, Ocean, etc. What is nice about these sections is that they don't all stick with the "typical" animals commonly classified with each time of habitat. An example is tigers being in the forest section. This shows children that there are other types of forests as opposed to just the American and Canadian types they may be familiar with.

Amazing addition to our sons library, the book has a lot of incredible photos which are high quality and a lot of information that can stuck in kids mind, but as others stated it can be easily ripped. Other than that I would recommend it.

My 2 yr old daughter loves these books. The photos are fun for her to look at and learn the animal names from. As she gets older, there’s enough simple information that she can learn about the animals too. Big books and heavy but my daughter picks hers up, sits on the couch and happily flips though them

I bought this as a birthday gift for my 4 year old daughter because she loves animals and she has been asking to read it every day. The book has hardback binding and is much larger than what I expected, which was a plus. It has 128 pages of beautifully colored animal photographs, many photographs of each type of animal per page. The pages themselves are thick and have tons of colors/designs surrounding the actual photographs. The writing per page is large print and contains lots of interesting facts about the animals, including lots of things even I didn't know. My daughter can't read yet, but this book would be good for a second or third grader to read independently.
For each animal, it lists the kind of animal (mammal, amphibian, etc.), what continent it lives on, the size of the animal, what the animal eats, what sounds they make, and how many babies the animal has at a time. Most animals have 3-4 pages dedicated to information about them. I've been teaching my daughter about animal habitats (grassland, ocean, tundra, etc.) and I was thrilled that this book is actually divided into habitats and the animals that live in them. Some of the animals featured are cheetah, giraffe, sea otter, sea turtle, meerkat, camel, red eyed tree frog, black handed spider monkey, raccoon, tiger, beaver, harp seal, snowy owl, penguins, and octopus. I like that it included a variety of familiar animals we've seen at the zoo with some lesser known animals like the desert jerboa and blue striped grunt.
As a former teacher, this book would be a great way to introduce students to the features of a nonfiction encyclopedia such as a table of contents, title page, captions, index, and glossary, all of which are featured in this book. Another feature I liked was the two pages of parent tips that give you ideas for enrichment activities to do with your child, such as measuring their height, blowing underwater bubbles, creating a diorama, clue games, and rhyming words. The book also has a world map that shows the continents and lists the animals in the book next to the continent they live on. There are so many educational aspects to this book and I can't believe it was only $9! It's such a high quality book and definitely one that we read a lot.

Exactly what I was hoping for

I purchased this book for my 4 year old son who loves animals. I was expecting a book that was more relevant for much older children, but knew my son would love the photos and could grow into it. The book is laid out in various types of environment - ie forest, desert, and to my surprise an ocean section. There are a good variety of animals, many common, but a few uncommon or some I had never specifically heard of (ie breeds of fish). There were a couple of great detailed photos on each page. There is quick facts highlighted and a couple of sentences for each animal. There was an excellent variety and the book itself is a good size (about the same height as a standard paperback book but a bit wider) and is good quality. Personally I think the reading and facts are aimed at a child around 7-10. I would recommend to someone looking for a good book about animals for children. I think much older than 10 years old you are better going for a more detailed book. I think its great and my son loves it.

Haven't seen this myself directly as it was a gift sent directly to my 1 year old God granddaughter (daughter of my Godson). She loves amimals and is a confirmed lover of nature already. Her father reads passages to her and of course there are the pictures. Eventually she will be able to read it herself and being hard cover it will last. Her parents reackon it is a super book.

Super pictures and good quality text in small bites for early readers who want more than story books with repetitive text to read. Part of an excellent series, graded levels, really interesting! My granddaughter age 6 loves them! I have bought a few! Space, Dinosaurs etc

Buy it if you want 100 + loose pages strewn about your house

Lovely book, our 22 month old toddler adores it and Kris going back to the animals she loves over and over again. BUT..... As other people have said, the binding is hopelessly inadequate... Pages are just glued in, I don't even think this would hold the pages in to a book for adults and it certainly hasn't kept the pages in to our copy... So now we have lovely pages that are strewn about all over the place. Really annoyed with national geographic about this, it's pathetic.

Good book, terrible packaging.

I bought this after being impressed by the dinosaurs book in the same series. This book too does not disappoint in content. My 3-year-old is hooked and asks me to teach her about new animals every day. So for the content of it (gorgeous full colour pictures, smooth, sturdy pages, lovely finish and word content), this really is a good book.
However, the packaging it arrived in was ridiculous. It was a HUGE box full of crumpled paper for absorbing shock, and under it all was a single book. I could've fitted at least 30 such books in there. Come on, Amazon, think about the environment and save on paper. A simple postal envelope would do.
