Practically every single piece has a hard bit of the core that impacts the enjoyability of the chunks.. and impacts things further if you have issues with your teeth. Chewing a soft bit of something and then biting into something hard completely throws you out of whack. If you have poor teeth, this could result in a tooth breaking depending on the hardness of the product and the leverage/force of what's between your teeth.
..if you can't tell, yes, I've had this happen to me before. It's probably fine with this product (unless there's a deep part of the inner core), but you never know. Still heavily detracts from enjoyability regardless.
Also, at about $3.35 a can, you'd save a lot more money just buying pineapples and preparing them yourself.. though this is supposed to avoid the preparation part, it might still be worth it regardless seeing as the company is refusing to go back to their old manufacturing methods which did not have part of the core on the chunks (or random bits of outer skin). Oh and you'd save yourself from toxic plastic linings in cans, which are bad if the product contained in them is acidic, which this is.
I contend that people who complain about this product are not used to eating raw pineapple. They are used to whatever the "big name" label gives them. Perhaps the company cuts the fruit just a hair closer to the rind than the other "big name" company does, but there is NOTHING WRONG WITH NATIVE FOREST PINEAPPLE. It is tasty, sweet and tart, and the juice is UNFILTERED (perhaps that's why people grouse about the juice being "gritty"). I enjoy the juice as well as the fruit, and find no grittiness to it. I have never had dented cans, either.
In conclusion, I would recommend this product to anyone, wholeheartedly. I enjoy several cans of it each week.
FOLLOWING IS MY ORIGINAL REVIEW FROM SPRING, 2012.
Of course I prefer to get my foods either fresh or in glass jars. But when neither of those are an option, then I resort to canned foods--IF THEY ARE PBA-free cans.
For a canned food, I rate this 5 stars even though it's a canned product because: (1) I only eat organic foods, and it is rare that anyone in the DC metro area sells ORGANIC fresh pineapple; (2) the Native Forest cans are now PBA-free [with the exception--according to the manufacturer--of a few veggie items that haven't yet been converted as of Spring 2012]; and (3) extensive online searching revealed that NO ONE sells organic pineapple in glass jars. So if I want organic pineapple, I have no option but to buy it in cans.
I've so far consumed about 15 cans of this pineapple. In only 1 can so far did the pineapple have a slight "can taste" that one of the other reviewers referred to. Yeah, I don't like that distinctive "can taste" either. But except for that one can, the pineapple has tasted very good--and no unripe pieces or detritus, or pieces of pineapple core or outer skin. So I'm pleased, and it satisfies my craving for pineapple when I can't get fresh organic.
Dented cans: this has been a problem with 2 shipments over the past 6 months, because the manufacturer fails to put adequate cushioning inside the box to protect the cans. So when the box gets tossed around during shipment, some of the cans can be dented. When they arrive too dented to open or raise concerns about whether the seal might have been broken on the pull-off lid, I call Amazon customer service and request a refund or a replacement shipment. Amazon has been great about either immediately issuing a refund for the damaged cans or immediately shipping out replacement cans that arrive within 2-3 days.
So obviously there is a slight metallic taste for those who have good taste buds. And what happens if the can comes dented, which you can almost always count on for any thing not purchased in the grocery store....ya think that might even cause more leaching? ya think?
I do cook a lot with pineapple so I was initially bereft because there are no other choices for canned organic pineapple, but I have just realized I can just buy organic pineapple juice in the glass jars and that will be fine for my muffins and salad dressings.
