First of all I want to say that while technically this book could be read as a standalone, I've no doubt it will be much more enjoyable if you've read BURN YOU TWICE beforehand. This story takes place approximately one year after that book ends and has most of the same characters as well as plot devices that were rolled over from that story...

As for NEAR YOU, I absolutely loved it and literally read it in every spare second I could find. Not only did I adore both Ann and Bryce, but I found I liked the unpredictable and brilliant Elijah as well and so did not want him to be behind these grisly murders. The story itself was fast paced, unpredictable, and downright chilling at times too. As someone who is always searching for clues as to the killer's identity, I'm happy to say I missed several and didn't truly figure out who it was until about 3/4 of the way through.

And although this is first and foremost a tale of mystery and suspense, there is a slight if not understated romance between our two protagonists. Overall the story just really intrigued me and held my attention from the first page all the way to the last. It was an equally thrilling and engaging read that was so good I was honestly sorry to see it end 😊

It would be nice if the books that are in a series involving the same characters would have a “book 1, 2,…”. I read this one first and I was left wondering what happened to Ann’s ex-husband. It wasn’t until I read “ Burn You Twice” that I realized I read the books in the wrong order. That has occurred with other of the authors books. The only way to tell would be to look at the publishing dates.

Missoula Montana is ground zero again, as Mary Burton's masterful storytelling focuses on Ann Bailey, forensic psychologist and sister to Joan Mason, main character in "Burn You Twice." Both books focus on Elijah Weston, now exonerated exconvict wrongly found guilty of arson a decade earlier.

Although this book can be read as a standalone book, I strongly recommend reading "Burn You Twice" first for background story elements and character continuity. Both books are hard to put down once started.

This story begins with a horrific murder committed by an unidentified killer, requiring Dr. Ann Bailey to be consulted for clues to who the killer might be. Bryce McCabe of Montana Highway Patrol leads the investigation that quickly become more complex as new evidence and similar parallels to other murders come to light.

This engrossing crime procedural get complicated as facts begin implicating Elijah Weston, who had a brief fling with Ann Bailey in their college years. Suspenseful plot and storyline combine to create a tense read with several surprises and unexpected twists that enliven the reading drama.

Strong characters and lively dialogues bring this murder investigation to life with memorable narration and vivid descriptions in this highly focused story that will have you guessing right up to the final chapters.

Characters are likeable even though personality quirks create conflicts and uncertainty. Mary Burton's signature and obligatory love scenes again punctuate the novel, something likely to polarize readers pro or con.

Audible's narration supplement added drama and pacing to my reading experience, raising story tensions and emotions effectively.

The longer backstories to both books suggests addition installments, which if available, I plan to read.

I know this author is good but this felt like a story that I’ve read a hundred times. Divorced/Widowed young beautiful woman, with great legs, full breasts and a small waist apparently! Why we needed that information I have no idea unless we start to drift off into law enforcement agent fancies the potential victim, experiencing flashes of anger when said women acts independently I.e visiting the crime scene on her own, man a live this is sooooo cliched.
and very very much not politically correct, disappointing can’t believe I paid for this.
