About the Author

Kij Johnson is an American writer of fantasy and the author of three novels and more than thirty short works of fiction. She has worked as managing editor for Tor Books and TSR (later Wizards of the Coast), collections editor for Dark Horse Comics, and content manager working on the Microsoft Reader. She is an associate director for the Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas, and serves as a final judge for the Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award. --This text refers to an alternate kindle_edition edition.

E.C. Myers (he/him) was assembled in the U.S. from Korean and German parts and raised by a single mother and the public library in Yonkers, New York. He won the Andre Norton Nebula Award for his first novel, Fair Coin (2012), and is the author of the S0S Thriller series and RWBY young adult books: After the Fall (2019), Before the Dawn (2020), and Fairy Tales of Remnant (2020). His short fiction has been published in various anthologies, including Mother of Invention, A Thousand Beginnings and Endings, Hidden Youth, and Kaleidoscope. He also writes for the serialized podcast Orphan Black: The Next Chapter.

Good science fiction anthology

Unlike some other volumes in this series that contain a lot of fantasy, all the Nebula award winners (including the novel) were science fiction. The only fantasy in sight were the poems, "Christmas Inn" by grand master Gene Wolfe and the excerpt from 'Fair coin' that won the Andre Norton award for best young adult novel. The dragon on the cover probably doesn't convey this. I have a preference for science fiction so this suited me. The winners were all pretty good, especially Nancy Kress's novella winner that takes up over a third of the collection. I really liked the runner up short stories by Lui and Rambo, both were nice and quirky. I really like Gene Wolfe and this story is typical and wonderful, and (I think) not available in any of his anthologies.

I am not a great fan of novel excerpts (again as reflected in some other reviews) and if any future editors are reading these reviews maybe a representative piece of short fiction from the novel winners would be better.

As other readers have said this novel is a bit shorter than the last few which is a pity. Still the stories that are there make it a worthy addition to the series.

I am a science fiction fan but I found these stories to be a bit too intellectual for me. I like a story that is not layers upon layers of cerebral contemplation. The awards winners this year were all thinkers. Sometimes I like stories that surprise me or make me laugh. Not these
The stories are well written. Once you finish a story, it makes you think.
But if you like serious stuff this book is for you.

Good book, but with a caveat

Let me state at the outset that I like the book. I gave it four stars rather than five because it has so few of the actual nominated short fiction (the three winning pieces and two of the nominated short stories, the short stories by Liu and Rambo). The last two Nebula Award Showcases (2012 and 2013) were both longer by page count and had essentially the same price as this ($17.95 and $18.00). I buy these for the short fiction and too little of that was included. The publisher, for some reason, saw fit to reduce the page count yet kept the price.

With all that in mind, I give a qualified "Buy" recommendation.

I first got into science fiction after seeing the original Star Trek series live (yes I am that old). The Nebula Awards were the first anthology that I read; a great introduction to Sci-Fi; and realistically, fostered my life-long love of reading. I got this for myself and then my sons read it also. It is a collection of short stories by multiple authors and each with a different story line and style. They call it "awards" because these are the best of the best for that year. It does not disappoint.

The Right Stuff

Best Novella is Worst SF Story Ever

As a long time fan of SF, I can authoritatively say that the story by Nsncy Cress, After the Fall, Before the Fall, and Who Know Where Else, which won the Best Novella Award, is one of the worst SF stories ever. It's one of those "Earth would be a wonderful place if only we could get rid of humans." If that's not bad enough, it throws in an intelligent and murderous earth, time travel, government conspiracies, some kind of supernatural being/machines that are all powerful, but amazingly uncommunicative and inept, family tragedies, and some weird sexual vibes. How this story won best of anything is incomprehensible. It's awful and, unfortunately, a good chunk of this book.
