From the Back Cover

Facing death takes courage. Facing life takes even more.

In the last stages of a genetic disease, Ellen Creighton has decided to live out her remaining days at the estate of her longtime friend Harrison Burlington. Though he's never allowed himself to get serious in a relationship due to his paralysis, Harrison cares deeply for Ellen and is desperately trying to save her life by finding the holy water that is believed to heal any disease--the same substance Ellen suspects is responsible for the deaths of her father and sister.

But Harrison is not the only one seeking the holy water. Dangerous criminals are mere steps behind, and Ellen soon learns they will go to any lengths to get the powerful drug--including sending her back into the past to locate it for them.

Bestselling and award-winning author Jody Hedlund plunges you into the swiftly flowing river of history in this second breathtaking Waters of Time story.

2.0 out of 5 stars disappointed and annoyed
By Melanie P. on January 18, 2022
I love Jody but not this book. I usually keep my reviews pretty short but this one has a lot that I need to go into. Considering this is the lowest rating I've ever given this author and I'll try not to give any spoilers.

Negative points...
I was annoyed with Ellen (main female character) 90% of the time. For being a nurse, she's incredibly stupid and reckless. Maybe she's more book smart than street smart?? I really hated how she was made out to be "someone that everyone falls in love with" when I just couldn't stand her. She gets all offended when 13th century men say or do certain things but um.... you're not in Kansas anymore sweetie. In the previous book, Marian is much more life smart as well as intellectual, and I was saddened to have the main female character be so annoying.

she was constantly rationalizing her feelings which I found confusing. You'd think that someone who knew she'd die young would seize life and not let a moment go to waste. Like, tell the guy you like that you actually like him?? I would have expected a "live your life to the fullest" attitude but it was all doom and gloom.

Harrison didn't act his age or breeding. (The closest we got was when he played the violin. Loved those moments by the way) I think this was mentioned in another review, but he has moments where he acts the British aristocrat but most of the time, he's too impulsive and juvenile. I imagined him to be kind of like a younger Paul Hollywood without the grey hair but instead, he acts like a contestant on the Bachelor. Maybe that's harsh but I can't go into my reasons for that without spoilers so...

The ending was rushed. I don't like feeling rushed in the end. It's like getting dessert at a restaurant and then they make you eat quickly because they are closing. *Spoiler* the sudden part just thrown in there about deciding not to have kids? She doesn't have the disease anymore and he is not THAT old so.... why?....

The first book, Come Back to Me was SOOO much better. The characters there were mutually sacrificing for each other through the whole book, and I loved both characters equally... In this book, Harrison is the best character and Ellen feels like a typical, emotional female leech.

I did find an editing mistake. In the images I put on this review, one page mentions the year that Ellen time travels to... 1383. However, on page 183, it says 1832 (look at the images to see) It only happened once in the book, but this is a HUGE typo. That's over 400 years difference. Get it right people.

And lastly,. what about the characters that didn't get closure??? Sir Nicholas who played a huge part in this book was kind of lost at the very end. What happened to him? It wouldn't have taken much to put something, anything that mentions him. There was a pregnant servant who played a part in the previous book, and I wanted to see what happened to her baby. What about Jasper and his dad who's sick?

Good points....
I was very happy to meet the dad in this book. Harrison is the kindest human. I loved the moments with Marian and her husband William. Sir Nicholas is a great character and made me want to learn more about him. I appreciate the research that went into the place and kind of people that lived in the Middle Ages. Jody Hedlund has always been good at researching her time and place for her stories.

I ended up giving this book 1 star for the research and overall good writing and 1 star for the plot idea. Even though the execution wasn't up to par.
