About the author

A warm welcome to my author page! Thank you for visiting.
I live in Scarborough on the stunning North Yorkshire Coast in the UK. My home inspired the creation of the fictional seaside town of Whitsborough Bay where I set some of my books. The Hedgehog Hollow series takes readers to a gorgeous countryside setting on the Yorkshire Wolds.
I live with my husband, our teenage daughter and sprocker spaniel, Ella. I'm a stationery addict with a notepad obsession who loves chocolate (although it doesn't love me), hedgehogs, 80s music, collectible teddy bears and lighthouses.
My career has mainly been in HR as a trainer and recruiter. I had a brief detour into retail to set up and manage my own specialist teddy bear shop and started writing my debut novel on quiet days in the shop.
In June 2020, I became a full-time author. I'm so very grateful to anyone who has bought or borrowed my books in whatever format, helping me fulfil a long-held dream of writing full-time. I still can't believe I get to spend every day chatting to my fictional friends and making stuff up.

A warmhearted and tenderly-crafted character, our main protagonist, Samantha Wishaw - now proud owner of a Hedgehog Rescue Center, occupying an inherited farmhouse and acreage in the Yorkshire Wolds - is both blossoming and worrying under the strain of caring for and providing emergency lodging for wounded, diseased and starving rural hedgehogs, as well as maintaining her full-time job as a teaching nurse at a local technical college.
Vulnerable, kind, clear-eyed and guileless, Sam is the friend every reader wishes they had; a woman who will always put her loved ones front and center, and is only lately learning to respect and protect her own soft heart in the process.
With the help of her gorgeous “true-north” partner, Josh, a veterinary surgeon impeccably aligned with both her heart and her rescue-center mission, Sam’s world, (and her cozily reconstructed farm-house) is never too full to expand to those in need, as circumstances, trials and tragedies befell her circle of charming, quirky, colorful, spiteful and even nasty characters (each of them now regular visitors to this series).
Through alternating first-person POV narrative streams, Samantha and Josh, each candid and compassionate in the telling of their stories, strike the perfect balance between the heady misery of family trauma, interpersonal grief and betrayal, and the soul-stirring joy of finding their forever-footing, (perhaps, along the way, only tentatively, finding peace with other significants and their trappings, but time, and the furtherance of this series, will certainly tell ...)
Do not be surprised, if before you know it, this lovely cheering book (and indeed, the entire series) has found its way deep into the melty center of your heart, as these characters firmly settle themselves down, - quietly, decidedly, taking up root, - a sure and welcome sign that you will be back to visit with them again soon.
A great big thank you to the author, and the publisher for an ARC of this book. All thoughts presented are my own.
Enjoyed meeting the near characters, especially Fizz. I am going to continue reading the series but I have to admit I want an EPIC love story. It may not be in this series, but I will enjoy the story telling by this author as I continue my quest.
Please stay safe. Take care of your mental health during this pandemic.

Josh and Sammie are happily settled together but there are still plenty of challenges to overcome: Sammie is torn between her job as a nurse and running the hedgehog rescue centre, not to mention dealing with messy family problems; and Josh is struggling with a massive betrayal from the past.
The narrative switches from between Josh and Sammie throughout which gives the reader great insight into the thoughts of each character.
And of course not forgetting the hedgehogs themselves who stole my heart from the first mention. Through her meticulous research, Redland really knows how to bring those hedgehogs alive (some of their names made me laugh out loud!) and by the end, I felt very emotional and protective over them.
This is an absolute triumph of a novel and I can't wait to read the third in the series.
Highly recommend.

I was so pleased when Jessica announced a sequel to that first book, and having finally had the chance to read New Arrivals, I can say it didn't disappoint in any way. It was lovely to see Sam and Josh established as a couple, and find out how their lives were moving on together after the traumatic time they'd had in the first book. They have such a wonderful relationship, full of love and trust, and it's a joy to read about them and be back in their company.
Hedgehog Hollow is as beautiful as ever, and I longed to be able to visit it for myself and sit on that bench overlooking Thomas's wildflower meadow. With lots of cute little hedgehog arrivals at the farm, there's a lot to keep Sam and Josh busy - and that's before they even start on the humans in their lives!
This sequel delves more into Josh's past. We got to know a little about his back story in the first book, but this time, Josh reveals the depths of what he went through with his father, and why he's vowed never to speak to him again. It's easy to see why he would walk away from him, after the terrible experience he had, but things are never that black and white, and we learn, as does Josh himself, the other side of the story. People, generally, are neither all good or all bad, and the ties that bind us to our families are strong, however much they may hurt us. For Josh, the pain he suffered, because of the actions of his father, is not easily forgotten, but when something is revealed, it changes everything, and Josh has some big decisions to make.
Sam also has a decision to make, as caring for the hedgehogs is proving more time consuming and exhausting than she expected. And not everyone wants her to succeed...
But Hedgehog Hollow is the sort of place that brings out the best in most people, and a helping hand is never far away. Family, friends, volunteers - soon the farm is overflowing with people keen to save the hedgehogs, and share in the magic of Hedgehog Hollow.
I loved this heart warming book, with a cast of interesting characters, human and hedgehog. Told with the author's characteristic warmth, the reader can't help but be drawn into the world of this gorgeous little haven in the Yorkshire Wolds. I really took to new arrival Fizz, who I think has a great story of her own to tell, and it was great to see Sam and Josh's relationship developing and deepening, despite the problems they each face. They work as a team, and it's brilliant to see that.
I'm really looking forward to the next in the series, Family Secrets at Hedgehog Hollow.

This book features mainly on the relationship between Sammie and Josh, and of course the hedgehogs. There is a lot going on at Hedgehog Hollow and trying to keep up with that and teaching aswell, Sammie seems to be struggling healthwise. Fortunately there is help at hand with family and some new and old friends helping out at the hedgehog sanctuary.
We meet up with most of the characters from book 1 and learn a lot more about their lives. We find out a lot more about family relationships but not everything yet.
Roll on book 3, when more will be revealed I am sure. Jessica always has me wanting more and more.

Samantha and Josh's story line is amazing love story with true felt emotions and family problems. How Love concurs all and comes out on top. Its an amazing story with a few twist and turns on the road for both, thinking you know what's going to happen but as you read on the story takes a different road to your own taught.
Most of all I cant believe the last line of the book. To be left with such a cliff hanger I cannot wait for May to see what happens next.
Since last year I have read all of Jessica's book's A New Fan. She's an amazing writer I have loved all her books and would definitely recommend they are ALL worth the read.
