Fun and Average

I've watched this movie a few times and although I still enjoy it, I find myself enjoying it less the more I do so. As far as the story is concerned, it's not treading any new ground, but I found it interesting enough and it was at least consistent. None of what we're shown is ever fully fleshed out, but you're given enough information to know what's going on, and many times that can be the superior approach as opposed to disclosing everything (especially in a horror film.) The actors all hand in passable performances, but nothing spectacular. It's a bit weird seeing Kevin Costner playing such a seemingly meek and demure character, but you can tell he's doing his best here.
The music is forgettable, but appropriate, although there are several cheap jump scares throughout. The cinematography is ok, and you can tell the use of the darkness was intended to keep the monsters as much out of being completely shown as possible, but thankfully none of the scenes come out unwatchable sans one part near the end (and that, again, could be intentional given the context of the scene.) All in all, this isn't a groundbreaking movie and won't blow anyone away, but for typical sci-fi horror fare it's perfectly watchable. You might find yourself laughing about it later (as I do), but in a fun and memorable way. 4/5.
