How customer reviews and ratings work

Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. It also analyzed reviews to verify trustworthiness.

5.0 out of 5 starsThe Art of War for listbuilding
Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2018
I've read a lot of books and articles on how to build email lists and reader funnels but this was the first book that talked about overall strategies versus just tactics. It doesn't seem like much but it's powerful. It's the difference between following a recipe and knowing how to cook. It's about being able to adapt when that "one crazy trick" you learned in a webinar no longer works because the algorithms changed. The book covers setting up your list, getting the right reader onto that list and how to keep them there. While some of it was familiar, Tammi's take on the process made me re-examine how I approached it and how I might be getting in my own way plus some nuances on setting up the process behind the scenes that will save me time and keep me from getting accidentally stuck in spam filters in the long run. The book also has tons of resources in the back, making it a go-to reference for all things listbuilding.

This book is the real deal.

3.0 out of 5 starsWell, It Could Have Been Worse.

It took me some time to get through this book. It wasn't that it was hard to get through. It was that I was reading a few other books at the same time. All in all, it only took about two or three days to read it when it was all said and done. That's going at a very slow pace. So it is a relatively quick read.

However, there's nothing groundbreaking here when it comes to email marketing. If you are unfamiliar with email marketing, it's a good primer to get your feet wet. There are a lot of links she directs you to at her website which can be helpful and useful. I would argue even more useful than this book. I got more information from them than I did from the book.

Grant it, I came into this with experience so your mileage may vary depending on how much you have. Even with the experience I had, I did find some profitable nuggets. And as I said, the links she directs you to at the back of the book were beneficial.

Her writing style is quick with a heavy dose of an attempt at levity. When you first start off, that's not bad but as you go through the book, it gets a tad annoying. More so because it's not funny. But that, of course, is subjectivity at work…kind of. That she used it too much I don’t believe is subjective but a fact.

This is not the most horrible book on the subject, so don’t think that’s the case since I’m giving it three stars. It’s middle-of-the-road.

It's All About The Author

I've a degree in PR/Marketing and even I came away from reading this book with new ideas and possibilities in ways to strengthen my newsletter.

Labrecque has an easy, enthusiastic writing style that makes for easy reading. While I skimmed a number of pages, it wasn't because the info wasn't of value, it was because the content simply covered things I already knew. But, oh the small gems I found that I'd not considered before I made this wonderful find. (Must give David Gaughan credit for the recommendation in his newsletter.)

Authors up your game with this book (I took my author newsletter up to an 80% open rate). If you do regular newsletters, want to improve its reach, and maintain readership, this is the book to buy short of hiring someone like me (an author who moonlights as an author assistant) to do it for you. Even if you have an assistant, read the book and make your assistant read it too.

If a trained professional like me with 15+ years in publishing (5 in gov't/private sector) can learn from this book you can too. The content and advice enclosed is well worth the small price of the book. Also, if you check my profile, I don't 5-star books that often, only those worthy of that distinction. I'd give this book a 10 if possible.

Much like David Gaughran, who writes the foreword for this book, I have done absolutely everything wrong with my newsletters. I knew I was failing and what I thought I had to do to fix the problem was too overwhelming, so I shut my newsletters down a couple of months ago and gave up.
Fate intervened as I forgot I had pre-ordered Newsletter Ninja and it popped up on my Kindle at just the right time. I read it all in one sitting - it's a fast-paced read - and am now armed with actionable advice to get my newsletters back on track and working for me. Thanks, Tammi!

4.0 out of 5 stars Solid, useful information concisely presented

A useful book mainly for all the resources and links that are included. But I can't stress enough that author mailing lists should be the main priority only for authors with at least several (three) published books. Reason: repeat sales and "sell-through," which means enticing readers with a freebie such as the first book in a series. Once they've read book one, many are likely to buy book two, perhaps most of those readers will buy book three, etc.

The author gives good suggestions for providing other freebies (she calls them cookies). But keep in mind that for writers, the best freebie is almost always something you've written such as a short story, character history, prequel or chapters that were "killed darlings."

Therefore, the best audience for this book are writers who are well into their careers and have published at least three or more books so they have a viable reason to spend time, money, and effort generating a large and active email list.

5.0 out of 5 stars Will save you hundreds of dollars and hours!

I built (or attempted to build) a list for my YA series several years back. The few people I managed to entice to join were unengaged and had no interest in even opening my emails, let alone clicking. I spent hundreds of dollars and hundreds of hours and got nothing in return

I’m gearing up to start a new list, so I wanted to figure out what I’d done wrong and more importantly how I can do it right this time.

Tammi’s guide was easy to read and jam packed with the information I needed. She lays out step by step instructions on how to build a thriving, engaged list in a way that doesn’t make me want to hyperventilate. For anyone who’s willing to put in the work, Tammi will show you how to get the most from your effort and create an atmosphere that will foster not just readers, but super fans!

I cannot recommend this book highly enough!

A lot of non-fiction books for authors claim to be "actionable", but often they tell you to do something with little guidance on how said action is done. This book is wonderfully different, spelling out clearly what actions authors should take with their newsletters and, more importantly, HOW! There are great examples for every step, clear explanations, and it's written in an easy to read, conversational manner that made me feel like the author was teaching me in person. Highly recommend to any author wanting to become a newsletter ninja!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must-Read for Authors

Dang! This book really has me thinking. It's chock full of really good information presented in clear, conversational language. It's not going to tell you how to execute specific tasks in your respective email service provider (there are just too many EMSs out there for anyone to try), but the theories behind how to make your newsletter work for you are solid. I'm looking forward to trying to implement even a fraction of the author's advice. It all makes sense, but I never connected the dots before. Thank God Tammi Labrecque did it for me. There's a bonus at the end--links to other relevant and helpful resources. If you're an author looking to expand your email list, you don't want to miss this book.

Newsletter Ninja is a must-read for authors. I set up my newsletter and create the content like most of us do, basing it on author suggestions and pieces of information collected at conferences, in workshops, or from articles. But Tammi Labrecque gives you the whole newsletter picture. And she doesn't just tell you what to do, she explains the why behind it. Even if you you've got a great newsletter setup and your content is enthralling, I'm willing to bet that you'll find a lot of suggestions and information in Newsletter Ninja that will help you fine-tune your process. I certainly did!

As an independent author working hard to build my brand, the whole challenge of writing newsletters and growing my email list was overwhelming.

Before, I used to send out maybe one newsletter per month. But after reading Newsletter Ninja and taking one of the online courses, I actually enjoy writing my newsletter so much that I send one every two weeks!! Also, my open and click rates have doubled!

And I'm just getting started!

If you're expecting to see specific solutions to your mailing list issues - this is probably not the book for you!
If you're expecting solutions for your specific mailing list service - this is probably not the book for you!

Why? Because mailing list services change their features, terms of service, pricing, and capabilities semi-frequently. But also because no two mailing lists are alike. They have different subscriber bases, different goals, and even different things to offer subscribers.
So, what's the solution? NEWSLETTER NINJA! It's a book about the philosophies and practices that make a mailing list work for you as an author - something I know I struggle at, and I'm far from alone.
Inside you'll find a breakdown of things you'll need to know, and questions to ask yourself about your newsletter, whether you're just starting out, or planning to reorganize how you use your list.
From there you'll discover great ways to attract people to your list, welcome them properly, and then keep them coming back. And tips on how to get them opening, clicking on, and replying to your emails, which is essential to keeping your emails from ending up in spam/junk mail.
You'll also find out how to bring people back into the fold if they stop viewing or clicking on your emails, and how to deal with people who stop doing so, but haven't unsubscribed.
Throughout this book are great tips on planning your list's strategic goals, specific tactics you can use to support those strategies, and how to make your emails unique, authentically yours, and make sure you're giving the best value possible to your subscribers.
More importantly, the book is easy to read, with clear explanations of the reasons certain strategies and tactics work, and aimed specifically at authors, not newsletters in general. That was a great help to me as an author, because so many of us are unsure why we need newsletters, let alone how to start one, or run it successfully. Newsletter Ninja was a huge help in so many ways - I'm already seeing great results from adopting some of the lessons from this book!
