Cynthia grew up in Colorado, lived in Arizona, and was born somewhere east of there. Then she married a Montanan and that was the end of that. She earned a couple degrees and pursued a few careers, but found God’s best job for her when she became a wife and mom. Now her kids are grown-up enough to write their own stories, and so is she. She writes contemporary romance that is built on a foundation of faith. She says she isn't afraid to tackle messy stories, because after all, we're all a hot mess in need of perfect grace.

A skillfully woven tale for your Advent reading pleasure

To be honest, I haven't been a lifelong fan of "romance novels." While my 4 sisters were reading them, I was reading mysteries and sci-fi. But a few years ago, I read a story by Ms. Bruner, and her ability to craft a tale, weaving aspects of attraction and disdain between characters, captured my interest. Nic's Suite Santa is no exception. Nic is a strong, independent heroine who has been hurt... and hurt... and hurt in life... but like the song I live by says, she gets knocked down, but she gets up again!

As I read the opening scene, I found myself marveling at Nic's self-control and cooperative spirit, knowing that my reaction in the same situation would not be nearly so civil. I loved this character, right from the start, and couldn't wait to see how she would handle the challenge ahead. I read this book within 24 hours of my purchase, and savoured every bit of it. Nic's sister, Lauren, is the responsible, burdened older sibling watching over her younger sister, and Nic truly doesn't need her concern, she simply needs her love. Lauren's brother-in-law is Nic's ex-boyfriend, and the year apart has allowed her to get over him (or has she?). It turns out Mark has matured a great deal in the interim, and Nic begins to see a side of him that seemingly didn't exist when he left her. Ms. Bruner's real skill shines through in creating the situation into which Nic and Mark are thrust -- one in which they are required not just to spend time together, but to cooperate, for the sake of the rest of his family.

My parents cherished each of their grandchildren, and nothing made them happier than seeing the cousins all together at Christmastime. But as the family grew, the homestead could no longer contain us all, and even with two family homes around the corners, we soon discovered the benefit of that wonderful hotel amenity -- the indoor pool! So their last few Christmases on Earth, our parents enjoyed their grandkids afternoons and dinnertime, while the cousins whooped it up in the morning and evening in the pool at the hotel, and then gathered in the hotel theater to watch movies together. Some years, when the weather cooperated, there was an afternoon of sledding, tobogganing, or skiing added to the itinerary, too. Perhaps that is why this story hit home for me. Ms. Bruner captured perfectly that spirit of fun and adventure that cousins share together.

I will not spoil the ending for you, but I guarantee you will love seeing how family dynamics, economic struggles, and our own preconceived notions, which all of us deal with in life, combine to impact the main characters of Ms. Bruner's novella. This is how an excellent tale is spun.

Don't miss out on this wonderful offering this holiday season. Everyone can relate to the uncertainty Nic faces, the daunting circumstances of young adulthood, and the pure delight of time spent with children, whose innocence and sense of wonder at Christmastime take us all back to more innocent days. And all of us wish to spend the holidays with those we love, who love us best, no matter what the setting.

The Christmas novella Nic’s Suite Santa is a tremendously sweet book. It’s very slow and not too deep but as you read you’ll be drawn into Nic’s life and watch drama you’d never have dreamt unfold. I was greatly surprised at some of the plot twists but enjoyed each one very much.
Though I didn’t love either Nic or Mark much in the beginning that really changed and I was rooting for them before the end of the book.

This is the fourth Montana Weekend novella, and the series just keeps getting better. I've read all the books in the series, but so far this is my favorite. I rooted for the two main characters, Mark and Nic (short for Nicole), and from the start I wanted things to work out for them, but I had my doubts! Nic is reluctant to trust Mark again--and who could blame her? They broke up under bad circumstances a year before the story begins, but here they are a year later, thrown together again. Nic doesn't want any part of Mark, but Mark keeps doing things like remembering Nic's favorite sandwich. For the life of her, Nic can't figure out why the guy who dumped her remembers so much about her.

The Montana setting is perfect for this story, and I love the Christmasy feel of it. It's a warm, wonderful read, and I highly recommend it.

It's the July Fourth weekend, the day is beautifully sunny and green, with gentle breeze and swooping birds, perfect for reading, and I chose to read about Christmas! Maybe this is the best time, because the descriptions of the winter scenes, holiday decorations and activities stand out more in contrast to my surroundings. The story line with its romance and a touch of intrigue kept my rapt attention so that this "weekend novella" was consumed in one afternoon! As usual with Mrs. Bruner's writings, the situations and characters bring the reader right into them and show what faith in God can do in our everyday lives, and it's done without preaching. I have now read all of the Weekend Novellas so far, and there are 25 weekends left in this year. Please keep 'em coming!

This book surprised me. With the blah title and the talk of a man and woman sharing a suite, I didn't think I’d like the book, but I did. They have separate bedrooms and a shared sitting area in the suite, and it’s a clean, Christian read. I found the characters and plot interesting and it held my attention. There were too many detailed descriptions in places, but I found no grammatical errors.

This was a very cute Christmas story. My husband was a favorite playmate with his nieces and nephews. So I could relate to how Nic felt about all the attention Mark got with the kids. Hiring a pair of babysitters for a family Christmas gathering is quite foreign to me. That must be how the other half lives. This story could have been developed more with us finding out what happens in certain situations. However, it was a pleasant read.

I was very confused at the beginning. The author doesn't really clue us in as to what is happening at the start so it took a while to untangle why Nic didn't want to be around Mark. I liked both Nic's and Mark's interaction with the children. I thought Lauren planned a nice family reunion though I thought it odd that it occurred over Christmas. The family was together, but it just seemed odd to do it at a hotel rather than a home.

When I started reading this novella I simply expected it to be a cute story of a couple getting back together at Christmas. I was very pleasantly surprised to find that there was a lot more to it than that. It was refreshing to read an inspirational fiction book that truly had some inspirational content, as the characters' faith and relationships with God were something that was truly meaningful to them and integral to their lives. There was also quite a bit of depth to the story and to the issues that both Mark and Nic were dealing with. Throw in family and a bunch of cute kids and there was a lot to enjoy about the book. (Oh, and Mark was a wonderful hero - the world would be a better place if there were more men like him around.) I did feel slightly disorientated at the beginning of the novella as I felt that there needed to be a bit more explanation as to where the characters were and who they were, but this was soon rectified. I would love to find out what happened to Mark and Nic next, and there were other characters too who I would like to know more about. This book felt like it should be part of a series.

I would certainly recommend this novella and shall be looking out for more books by Cynthia Bruner.
