From Melissa Payne, bestselling author of Memories in the Drift, comes an emotionally rich, feel-good novel about hope, second chances, and seeing the world through someone else’s eyes.
Orphaned at a young age and witness to her brother’s decline into addiction, Nora Martinez has every excuse to question the fairness of life. Instead, the openhearted librarian in the small Colorado community of Silver Ridge sees only promise. She holds on to the hope that she’ll be reunited with her missing brother and does what she can at the town library. It’s her home away from home, but it’s also a sanctuary for others who, like her brother, could use a second chance.
There’s Marlene, an elderly loner who believes that, apart from her husband, there’s little good left in the world; Jasmine, a troubled teen; Lewis, a homeless man with lost hope and one last wish; and Vlado, the security guard who loves a good book and, from afar, Nora.
As a winter storm buries Silver Ridge, this collection of lonely hearts takes shelter in the library. They’ll discover more about each other, and themselves, than they ever knew—and Nora will be forced to question her brother’s disappearance in ways she never could have imagined. No matter how stranded in life they feel, this fateful night could be the new beginning they didn’t think was possible.

Review
“Payne has crafted an emotional, character-driven novel about addiction, perceptions of others, and learning to let go. The Night of Many Endings is ultimately one of hope as the darkness brings forth the dawn of many beginnings.” —Library Journal
“Richly layered and compassionate to its core, this story of genuine friendships transcending age and class, and the power of rebuilding, will move fans of Catherine Ryan Hyde, Jan Karon, and Kristin Hannah.” —Booklist
About the Author
Melissa Payne is the bestselling, award-winning author of The Secrets of Lost Stones and Memories in the Drift. For as long as she can remember, Melissa has been telling stories in one form or another—from high school newspaper articles to a graduate thesis to blogging about marriage and motherhood. But she first learned the real importance of storytelling when she worked for a residential and day treatment center for abused and neglected children. There she wrote speeches and letters to raise funds for the children. The truth in those stories was piercing and painful and written to invoke a call to action in the reader: to give, to help, to make a difference. Melissa’s love of writing and sharing stories in all forms has endured. She lives in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains with her husband and three children, a friendly mutt, a very loud cat, and the occasional bear. Nora, the librarian, lost her parents at a young age and watched her older brother struggle with addiction. Marlene is an elderly loner who gave up on her drama and feels there's little good left in her world. Jasmine, a new in-town teenager. Lewis, a homeless man. Vlado, the security guard.
I know a Nora, I see my friend in Nora.
“She wasn’t an addict, but she had allowed drugs to define her life as though she were.”
I have heard and watched my friend complain about people being enablers of poor behavior. Yet she is completely blind or in denial of her enablement, frequently not ending well. It's like a spiraling infinity loop that is just as hard to break out of as addiction.
I feel as those there is something muted in Lewis's story. Watching my friend's brother go through his addiction.... paranoia and jitteriness are missing in Lewis's behavior. I often see a roller coaster of emotions in a short period. I feel like when someone is resolved not to do drugs, they are ok, at least at the moment. If they are kept from their choices or drugs, they can get erratic. I felt that was barely touched on. No skin crawling or of how hard it was waiting to get his next dose.
It might seem very unlikely for Marlene to change so quickly over one night. I don't want to give away a spoiler, so I'll say I've seen something similar. It can be possible with the right person, the right timing, and the right perspective impact.
Jasmine and Vlado are the only characters without a first-person POV narrative. I am not sure why that is. I think it was a good choice. It would be too much to have all five POVs.
Payne's writing is engaging and heartfelt, drawing the reader into the lives of these complex and flawed characters. She tackles difficult topics such as addiction, homelessness, depression, and guilt with sensitivity and compassion. She also creates a vivid sense of place, making the library a sanctuary for these lost souls. The novel is a moving and uplifting read that shows how one night can change everything.
4.4 Brkn Stars
I really liked getting three different people's POVs. I think the author did a great job of making each character different. Sometimes, with multiple POVs, the characters are all similar and don't really seem like different people.
It was great to see how each person changed after their night together. How each person grew and changed in their own way. I absolutely loved Vlado and Jasmine. I'm not sure how I feel about Mario. I've got some mixed feelings about how he treated Nora. I can understand the guilt and not wanting to disappoint her, but I hurt for Nora that he never reached out to her.
I absolutely loved this story...it will stick with me for a long time. Definitely recommend.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a very easy read but with plot depth and richness of characters. The writing was incredible. I am definitely looking forward to reading more of Melissa Payne's work. Well Done!!
Do you know the story of the person you just passed by?? Read it and weep…and never assume again.

Strangers meeting in a library and learning that appearances are deceiving.
Interesting storyline and would definitely recommend and look forward to reading more from this author

This is a heart breaking story it is slow and depressing (that's why 4 stars, should if out a little more happy in) but as the characters open up and tell each other there story there is a little banter and clearly they each touch each other in a change forever. It made me cry there is a 6 months later and you see what happens after.

Domestic reasons Mom took brother and myself to South Africa.. I was 15 years and devastated to leave my Gran..
So lifetime of staying strong and being true to values..sense humour helps. Father was a figurehead but suffered from Bipolar...Mom was a free spirit..loved travelling which she did by being a Stewardess on Liners..
So a mixture of living in different places and cultures and accepting folk for who they are. Deafness affected
me so wrapped myself in books..Joined the library ...only heard sound of rain falling 2 years ago with a new hearing aid
THOUGHT was something amiss with the Aid.....heard call of bird the crackle of a leaf when foot stepped on it...a new opening to sounds..so one never knows what lies ahead..still got alot of living and experiences to attain. Thank you Lord for good health.
