On a beautiful summer night in a charming English suburb, a young woman and her boyfriend disappear after partying at the massive country estate of a new college friend.
One year later, a writer moves into a cottage on the edge of the woods that border the same estate. Known locally as the Dark Place, the dense forest is the writer’s favorite place for long walks and it’s on one such walk that she stumbles upon a mysterious note that simply reads, “DIG HERE.”
Could this be a clue towards what has happened to the missing young couple? And what exactly is buried in this haunted ground?
“Utterly gripping with richly drawn, hugely compelling characters, this is a first-class thriller with heart” (Lucy Foley, New York Times bestselling author) that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

With the ease of a Vegas blackjack dealer, she shuffles between the days after Sophie’s discovery, the months leading up to Tallulah’s disappearance, and Kim’s frantic search in the days that followed. About the author

Thank you for visiting my Amazon author page!
My first book, Ralph's Party, came out in 1999 and was the best selling debut novel for that year.
Since then I have written and published another sixteen books, from the 'curry and flatmates' novels of the nineties and noughties like Thirtynothing, One Hit Wonder, A Friend of the Family and Vince & Joy, to more family-themed novels like After The Party, The Making of Us and The House We Grew Up In and more recently, psychological thrillers such as I Found You, Then She Was Gone, Watching You and The Family Upstairs, which charted in the summer of 2019 at number one in the hardback charts.
I live in London with my husband, two daughters, two hairy cats, two nervous guinea pigs and a lovely auburn dog. I write every day, a minimum of one thousand words, in a cafe, with no access to the internet, in two to three hour sessions.

A mystery is introduced early that piques one's interest -- a lovely hook, deeply set -- while the array of distinctive characters are introduced. They are well-drawn and so real, so human. I came to know them -- Jewell is brilliant with deep character description and exploration -- and none were simple or flat. I have a strong feeling that one in particular will haunt my memories for a long time.
And to the over-50 who said "oh, this is a book for 20-year-olds" --- Just. No. If you like hooky suspense with complex characters burdened by their flaws, their conflicting goals, their earnest dreams . . . not "dislikeable" characters, but very interesting and intriguing human ones, you'll want to read this book.
Another thing that Lisa Jewell has always done well is to keep up with changes in trends and changes in technology. So many authors shy away from this but when you read a novel from this author you can be sure that popular trends and technology will features. This is a great because when you go back and read them years later, there is a sense of nostalgia fro the time the book was set. I loved the fact that Instagram and travel vlogging features so widely in this book. I felt like I could relate to the characters in the book more because of that.
As always with a Lisa Jewell novel, we get fed details slowly but surely throughout the book. There are multiple time lines through a variety of narratives but all come down to one thing, the night she disappeared. I just loved the fact that we get details from one perspective and then we switch to another perspective meaning that we have to wait until we're back with that character/timeline before we can see the impact of what has just happened.
Tallulah and Kim are interesting characters. Even though Kim plays such a vital role in the book, she is Tallulah's Mum after all, we don't get told a lot of details about her. We learn of her as a mum and a grandma and we know that she has had this awful thing happen to her but that is about it when it comes to details about her. We are fed a lot more information about Tallulah but as usual this information is revealed slowly but surely. I love the fact that we have queer representation in this novel and I liked the part that views on peopler's sexuality plays an important part of the plot in this case.
I listened to this book on audiobook and the narrator did a great job. You do have to be paying close attention when listening, however, to make sure that you haven't missed a change in timeline or narrative. I would say that if you can read this book as an ebook or a physical book, that would be the better choice. I adored the fact that this book was structured into multiple parts and there are reveals towards the end of each part meaning you're compelled to keep reading and find out what the next part has in store.
I loved the structure, I loved the detailing and I loved the intense pressure of the storyline in the latest Lisa Jewell novel. The Night She Disappeared will have you questioning what you know and turning the pages to find the answers that you need.
Initially I was underwhelmed by the leisurely pace and the constant use of present tense (one of my pet peeves for a long work, although this author handles it better than most).
But the characters are extremely well-drawn and believable and the location, a scenic English village, vivid.
I’m not a fan of spoilers so won’t say much about the key relationship triangle in this book, amongst a young mother named Tallulah, her clingy boyfriend, Zach, and Tallulah’s new BFF, Scarlett. The disappearance hinges around these three during a night out at a local pub and it becomes absolutely engrossing.
Not so much the secondary story around Sophie, a novelist transplanted from London, whose book becomes key to providing a clue to the disappearance, a device I actually found just a bit soft. Or the secondary mystery around Scarlett.
But the main plot is a grabber.

With "The Night She Disappeared" Lisa Jewell has produced another captivating novel that is sure to appeal to many people. For the most part I really enjoyed the experience of reading this, but I couldn't help feeling that the overall impact was let down by elements that just seemed too unlikely to really ring true, even after making allowance for dramatic licence.
Young mum, Tallulah, goes for a night out with her boyfriend, Zach. They leave their baby child, Noah, with Tallulah's mother, Kim. The young parents have Kim's blessing to make a night of it and not to worry about rushing home early. But when the morning comes and the pair have still not returned, it becomes clear that all is not well.
The story takes place across a variety of points in time between 2016 and 2018. The time frame does jump around quite a bit, but the particular point when the events are taking place is always clearly signposted. It just means that you do need to pay proper attention and make a mental note as you are reading particular sections.
Lisa Jewell certainly knows how to craft a page turner of a novel that makes you want to keep reading just one more chapter, so that you can find out what happens next. That said, there were a number of elements that, for me, didn't quite bear scrutiny and felt a little slapdash, which is not becoming of Lisa Jewell, who is a better writer than that. I won't mention everything, nor will I go into great detail, because I am always conscious of spoilers, but here is a quick example: Sophie, the new head teacher's girlfriend, is a published author of cosy crime novels ... but she couldn't recall, without prompting, that a significant event in this mystery was borrowed directly from her own debut novel. Really?
Nonetheless, this was still an engaging and captivating read that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. I just felt that it could have been even better, if a few aspects of the plotting and characterisation had been a little tighter.

I look forward to her next book though!

I'm a huge fan of Lisa Jewell's thrillers and have read all of them. This one was such a disappointment. It started well enough, with the mystery of the disappearance, but then the story just plodded along. I was skim reading to skip the tedious descriptions of day to day mundane life. Yes, it paints a picture of the characters, but I got to the point where I thought "who cares - get to the exciting part!".
The change in timelines, going back and forth and from the point of view of different characters was very confusing and did not flow for me. I started to get irritated as I had to flip back to previous chapters to see where I was in the timeline.
I found Tullulah to be a bit of a wet blanket and wanted to slap some sense into her. I guessed early on what might have happened, so I didn't get that huge surprise when it was revealed. There was one small twist at the end, but by then I was just glad to get the story over with and really didn't care.
An expensive 9.99 spent on a rather dull book.
