I’ve been a Danielle Steel fan for more years than I can count. I’ve read every book she’s written….some great, some good and a few that were just alright. From the first chapter of Nine Lives, I felt that I’d already read it a few times. This seems to be her go to plot recently. Go to Europe…all in love ….tour Europe with….Etc. It was predictable and as the characters walked through the beautiful cities of Europe, it became so repetitive I stopping reading sentences and began scanning paragraphs and then pages just to get through it. I had the feeling of “been there, done that.” Even the end was expected!

I haven’t read a book by Danielle Steel in years, but the book blurb made this story sound intriguing and the number of five-star reviews tainted my better judgment. I hadn’t even read the first chapter and the reasons I said bye-bye to Ms. Steel’s books long ago came flying back in my face. The most exciting thing about this book is the pretty red racecar on the cover.

I’m a detailed-oriented reader. I love the scenes that come alive and characters who make me feel each change in their emotions. I want to understand the cause and effect of their situations. I didn’t find any of those here.

This book was dry and lackluster at best. Ms. Steel spouted out facts in what felt like an info dump (some over and over repetitively – get my drift). The dialogue was drab and unenticing, and the writing was blah and dull with no personality. Like the storyline, these characters had great potential to be so much more, but they remained wooden and stiff as well. They never became real to me — just robotic and lifeless.

I never felt any real connection between the characters themselves -- except maybe between a mother and her son. And I certainly didn’t find any language peppered with humor or wit – nope, just dry and ordinary. Focused basically on wealth and materialistic holdings along with the outrageously outlandish lifestyle filled with snobbery and pettiness. The money talked more than the characters. I expect more from a seasoned author.

I’m sorry but this book flatlined early on and nothing was able to resuscitate it. An abrupt ending without an Epilogue certainly didn’t help either. It’s a wrap with no happily-ever-after for this reader.

I have read so many of Danielle Steel's books over the years and some are amazing stories, others enjoyable. This was a combination of both. Nine Lives is about Maggie and how she avoids daredevils who love danger. Her Dad was a Navy flyer who died in a training mission because he loved the challenges of flying. Her brother died while fighting in Irag because he loved action. Her husband died in a plane crash that she survived. Maggie met Paul while in high school and they became best of friends, but he was a daredevil and loved danger. They went their separate ways after high school. Maggie led a dull life. Paul raced motorcycles and cars. He loved challenges and danger. They meet by chance after 30 years and after the death of Maggie's husband. Things start revving up for Maggie and Paul and their life is an adventure. If you want a quick read with adventure and excitement, I recommend this book.

DS can be forgiven for her imperfect writing that is sometimes repetitious because she tells great stories. Nine Lives tells a great story about a never forgotten sweet high school love that is rekindled later in life when both characters have fulfilled their youthful dreams. Maggie had a stable marriage and son in the suburbs after experiencing the death of her father, brother, and mother who couldn't bear the losses. Paul turned his daredevil ways into a fortune built on Formula One racing & daring financial maneuvers. When they're reunited when Maggie is widowed young, they embark on a love affair that neither allows to become more. Paul knows he lives for danger & never had children because of that. Maggie had a safe adult life but even a stable, solid husband died; she's not going to risk heartbreak again by fully committing to a man who loves danger. Their affair takes them across Europe and the Caribbean in full DS splendor. One of them is going to have to make a sacrifice if they want to be together - Maggie who suffers PTSD & wants to be a stable parent for her college-age son or Paul prematurely giving up his dangerous occupations. The predictable conclusion begs for a sequel. I want to see more of these characters.

Danielle Steel always tugs on my heartstrings! Wrapping a character around her reader's heart is a true talent by Steel that shines through once again in her newest release NINE LIVES. I felt like this book had a lot more narration instead of dialogue, but I was deeply entrenched in it throughout never the less. The only thing I wished for was a bit more time with them at the end. I devoured it quickly and was left with a smile on my face!

Maggie is a relatable character who uses life's lessons to guide her in how she wishes to pursue her future. She shared a young love with a sweetheart of a young man, but went on to wager the bet of life with a more stable, dependable man. She never regretted her decision and lived a fulfilling life with her husband and beautiful son.

Tragedy has had a way of taking things from Maggie throughout her life and one more strike leaves her reeling and adrift. A happenstance reconnection with that dashing man of her youth brings a light back into her life that she didn't even realize she missed.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys following a character through the foibles of life toward that long sought after HEA.
