Suspenseful, Sexy, Smart, Sweet, Sometimes Scary, with a few Silly moments thrown in as well. All in all, a very Satisfying read! (Ok, enough of the S-words). Truthfully, the little town of Heart's Edge stole my heart! Heart's Edge's citizens are bursting with personality, the characters and the small town they call home are so beautifully depicted, I feel like I have truly been there! Warren and Hailey Sizzle! (Alright, I'm done. I promise this time!) But this little town is a dichotomy. On the surface is the quaint little tourist town out in the middle of no where...Montana, I think? Many of its citizens families have lived there for generations. Everyone knows everyone, and everyone is up in everyone else's business. Like the stereotypical small town. However, under that peaceful exterior is another level to this sleepy little hamlet. Layers of dark secrets, danger, and a horrible history that few people are aware of, and fewer still know the entirety of. There are things going on in the shadows of this little town, awful things, things that keep the people who do know living in fear. Knowledge is a danger that could spell disaster, not just to individuals, but to the entire town.
Using the shadows for his own shady purpose, hiding in plain sight, but with a secret plan for revenge, Warren has returned to his home town supposedly to put down roots. The townsfolk think he is looking to buy a house, to find a wife, to raise a family and make a home here in Heart's Edge where he grew up, and to finally end the nomadic way of life he has been living since he first left home with his sister to join the military as a young man. He has let people assume that he is here to stay, that eventually he will take over the Charming Inn that his grandparents built and which his grandmother, a beloved fixture in town, has operated for decades. In reality, Warren is only there to expose and destroy the man who he blames for the death in combat of his sister. Warren knows that all is not what it seems with his late sister's fiance' and former commanding officer, who came to Heart's Edge upon his discharge, supposedly to make his home in the place his dead love grew up, the place they had planned on starting a family together. This man has become a pillar of the community, a man who has personally financed many much needed improvements in this beautiful but economically struggling little town.
Into the middle of this game of intrigue, careen two strangers, Hailey and her niece. Hailey and her beloved niece get stuck in Heart's Edge in the middle of their road trip to Chicago, where Hailey is planning on making a fresh start. After walking in on her fiance' and her her best friend/maid of honor, having furtive sex at the final dress fitting appointment before their impending marriage, on the same day that she was fired from her soul sucking day job, and that the gallery she has been working with to sell and display her art, cancels her impending art show she decides she has had enough. She packs up her tiny apartment, and with her visiting niece in tow, she leaves town, heading on toward greener pastures. She hopes Chicago will offer her the opportunity to flourish as an artist while her heart heals. Her preteen niece and god-daughter is accompanying her so that they can spend some much needed girl time together while her parents are on a romantic vacation in Hawaii. Hailey is driving her sister's beautiful classic car, which decides to break down just outside of Heart's Edge. Stuck in town until the local mechanic can track down and get the part they need to fix the car shipped in, Hailey ends up renting half of a duplex cabin from Warren's grandmother at the Charming Inn that Warren is renting the other half of.
Warren is afraid that the fascinating but way too observant beauty will discover his true reason for being in Heart's Edge, or unwittingly, because of close proximity, become a target of the dangerous man he is investigating, so he decides to run her off by being an absolute a$$hole to her. Unfortunately, what neither of them count on is the chemistry that sparks white hot between the two of them from the moment they meet.
Despite Warren's churlish behavior, which just makes her want to stubbornly dig her heels in deeper. Hailey is enjoying her unplanned stay in Heart's Edge and falling in love with beautiful scenery, which speaks to her soul, and inspires her artistically in a way she has not experienced in far too long. She is also enjoying spending time with her niece who is discovering that she too may be an artist at heart. She is blissfully unaware of the watching eyes of an evil even Warren does not suspect and is unprepared for.
Be ready for a constant tug of war between suspense and romance in this book that will keep you riveted to your e-reader from the first page to the last! The characters are so vividly depicted they take on a life of their own, and you will want to know what happens next to the people of Heart's Edge. Not all of Heart's Edge's mysteries are solved in this book. In fact, with the resolution of Warren's search for justice, new and even darker secrets start to creep out of the shadows, embroiling Warren's closest friends in a terrifying conspiracy concerning past events he is unaware of. At the end of all of the books in this series there are also epilogues featuring the main character couple sometime in the future. Just wait, Heart's Edge will capture your heart as well!
