It is however a very pretty book with great drawings and a cute representation of a life lesson.
Had we had this book three years ago I likely would have loved it.
So while it delivers as promised, it is just not a book for kids 5 and up.
“It’s not perfect”. “Why?” “It needs flags”...The pair of bear friends fashion some flags, step back and declare the sand castle to be perfect once again; for just a few moments.
This pattern repeats over and over again, friends are added until the water’s edge is filled with the two best friends and a crowd of helpfuls, each with their own suggestions for achieving the perfection of this granular edifice. The story works it’s way to a definite crescendo at which time nature delivers a knockout punch that adults and wise older children will predict long before it happens; it’s still sad 😞
But not for long! Little (purple) bear and Big (orange) bear find the perfect way to enjoy the sunset and a few quiet moments together just being friends, without any pressure from sand castles or helpful others♥️
A lovely story of friendship, stick-to-it-tiveness, stress, peer pressure, a broken dream and finding your real happiness. The words are few but the illustrations are glorious and invite readers into conversations about the story. This is a book to be treasured repeatedly, by readers of every age📚
